Suffering Wounds/Ankaur Maro

By Click5, in Runewars Rules Questions

Another Maro question to throw on the pile, this time concerning his upgrade cards. My question is, after using his ability to add trays and then suffer wounds, who decides how wounds are allocated, you or your opponent?

Ankaur Maro says:

{Skill} Add up to {stable energy} full trays to another Waiqar infantry unit at range 1-5. Then, this unit suffers wounds equal to the number of trays added.

The RRG doesn't address this specifically, but it does say the following in regards to "damage"

22.1 When a unit suffers damage, the attacker - or the unit's opponent when the damage is not caused by an attack - assigns damage to one figure at a time until all damage has been assigned.

It would make the most sense if allocating wounds was the same way, but there's nothing in the RRG to confirm this. Everyone I've played with who has used the skill has assigned the damage themselves, but that seems wrong to me now. This would also mean that once the back rank of Maro's unit is gone, the opponent could assign the damage to the Maro upgrade directly. Interesting.

How have you all been playing this?

It seems this should be addressed in the next FAQ. I would play as you do, having the opponent assign the wounds. Unless we both missed something in the rules reference.

The opponent always assigns damage, chooses the morale card, assigns mortal strikes, and should likely assign wounds too. It's probably an oversight that the rule you quoted doesn't say "wounds or damage" like the rules around accuracy do.

You say it right there "Or the unit's opponent when the damage is not caused by an attack" The damage is not caused by an attack so your opponent chooses. It shouldn't matter, if you're doing it right the stable/natural should be balancing out for you and you never lose more than you regain at end of round. I try to make sure it stays out of combat and make sure it never loses a whole tray if I can help it.

Also you can't use these hits on Maro until he is the only unit left. I'm at work so I can't easily look at rules, but I know there is a rule that you can't hit upgrades if there are other options available, unless you have an accuracy.

The problem is it's doing Wounds, not Damage.

Nah, 38.4, you can assign damage to a figure upgrade like any other figure in the group. You just have to clear out the back rank first.

Oh interesting.

Kind of interesting, but also kind of pedantic.

I could just as easily argue that wounds are a form of damage.

Just have your opponent assign anything bad.

Wow Respect +5... no one ever uses Pedantic, let alone correctly.

Yeah, honestly by the time reanimates reanimate it won't matter where they take it, if it is from the back row. I've used Maro Upgrade three times, and I've never had it lose more than 5 total units, and that's because natural runes just weren't showing up... Now mind you've I've lost the whole unit but that was from Aliaana's Predator/packleader not my own damage. So where they take it from following normal rules (back row) you should never have an issue.

Your opponent does assign it since they assign all damage, but not like it matters.
It must go to the back most rank, which Maro isnt in. All this prevents is you picking 1 from each tray if you cant regen everything back that turn.
If Maro is selectable, he's gonna die in a moment anyway so might as well get 1 more tray spawn out of him.

If you are really worried about losing him after he got caught by a flank or something, beef his unit to a 6tray and put him in the middle. Thats 4 trays that must be burned through before he can be targeted (as you cant assign damage to a tray that would split the unit, w/o an accuracy anyway)
