Snap shot and tokens

By Earthtone, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey! I noticed something odd and figured I'd check and see what you thought. Originally I was trying to figure out if sensor jammer or saved tokens could be used against bombs, and it doesn't look like they can. But, as I was reading about focus and evade tokens I noticed they say can be used "during the combat phase to..."

Does this mean that even if your ship has focus/evade tokens when defending against snap shot they cannot be used? Snapshot is resolved during the activation phase, not combat phase. If that is the case I don't think it's terribly broken, as snap shot is already a little weak, though I'm sure it'll be a little weird explaining it to people.

Thanks!

Sensor Jammer cannot be used against bombs because bombs don't make an Attack , and you aren't " defending " against them. You can use focus and evade tokens only when defending against an attack, but not when you're hit by a bomb/mine.

As for Snap Shot, that's actually making an attack outside the Combat phase in much the same way Corrin Horn does in the End phase. And because it's an attack , you roll defense dice and are allowed to spend tokens when defending as normal. As per the card text, it's the attacker that can't modify his attack dice when making a Snap Shot attack. There's nothing on the card that prohibits the defender from modifying.

I don't believe you're restricted to only the combat phase using those tokens. For one thing why would snapshot in the attavk side even need to specify you can't modify your dice otherwise?

On top of that the quote you are referencing is only in the learn to play booklet where they are written in a much more casual conversational Style. Attacks are almost always only in the combat phase so casually referencing during the combat phase you would spend the focus makes sense but it's not actually a hard rule. If you look up focus in the rules reference it merely says you spend them attacking or defending and makes no mention of a particular phase. Rules reference has precedence over learn to play so I would say yes defenders can spend tokens against snapshot if they have managed to acquire one somehow.
