Range Bonus to defending

By Malabor, in X-Wing Rules Questions

As the defender, do I receive a range bonus to my green dice when being attacked by Missiles, torps, Cannons, etc.? I recently learned that secondary attacks (TLT) do not receive a range bonus, so I'm wondering if this rule also applies to the other attacks?

Thanks!

Secondary weapons are everything EXCEPT a ship's primary weapon which is the only thing the standard range bonus/penalty applies to. This means you do NOT get an extra Defense die against those missiles, torps, cannon, turrets, Snap Shots, and the like.

kinda starting to think nowadays you should though... just sayin.

Well then, that settles that! Thanks!

and yes, Juunon, I agree. It doesn't make any sense that you wouldn't get a bonus. If I'm farther away, aren't I harder to hit?

Then why can't some of my secondaries even hit you at R1? If you throw the range modifiers on secondaries you also should include the R1 bonus and now you're really changing the math on things.

Ahh, this is true. I guess that's the one of the many differences in a game vs. real world, eh?

Also remember the secondaries that work at range 1 also do not get the attack range bonus.

Another small but valid point. While there's no range bonus on secondary weapon attacks, if they're shooting at you through an asteroid or debris field, you still gain a die for the obstruction. Obstructed attacks have nothing to do with range bonuses. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. :)

The extra defense due should apply whether or not you are defending against a primary or secondary weapon. That’s how I’ve been playing and I don’t intend to stop.

Fine for home games and club nights if your opponents agree, but be aware if you do this at a tournament, you're cheating, no two ways about it.

So fundamental game rules are optional to you, are they?

I actually just started playing recently with 2 other people. We all understood the rule to be that range 3 gets you the bonus for everything.

Nope, Primary Weapon only. The lack of defensive bonus for the defender is one of the reasons you pay the price you do for secondaries.

I suppose that makes sense.

Which of course all boils down to making TLT and other nasty secondaries all that more dangerous.

Does do anything for Auto cannons/turrets. You want to bring in the effects of range for secondary weapons you're going to make those things stronger.

There's a Real-World Star War happening?! How Do I get there to help out?! ;)

The Empire needs you! Achieve glory in the face of your adversaries! Fly through space, see the galaxy!

But as stated by others... you pay for those. Secondary weapons cost squad points.

You're glamorizing it too much. War is a miserable, thankless experience. You give the Empire your best. You fight rebels and insurgents. You survive missions that wipe out entire squadrons of other good, brave humans! You single-handedly restore peace to systems embroiled in conflict!

And what do you get out of it? Your own commanding officer calls you "traitor", just because you respect the Emperor. You get sent on suicide missions, flying unshielded craft into minefields. You get tasked with capturing high-value enemies, only to have the reinforcements you requested blow up your targets before they can be captured, robbing you of extra points from bonus objectives! No one deserves that kind of misery. No one...

I love that game! Ah, the life of a pilot, not for the faint of heart.

Remember, 40 years ago the first casualty we saw was a poor nameless Stormtrooper. Who was he (or she). What about his family and friends? Poor Bob. Or Steve. Or TK401. Whatever.

Oh, sure, they try to ritz it up. They show you the holos of stormtroopers in bright, shiny armor and rave about how you can get an education while serving your Empire!

But let me tell you, when you're assaulting a Mon Cal cruiser with a dozen A-Wings going for missile locks on your backside, and you're flying through debris that just moments ago was your best friend and wingman, you're not worrying about how pressed your uniforms are or how British your accent is. You're just doing everything you can to come home in one piece if you can, or take a whole slew of Rebel scum with you if you can't.

<shakes glass> Barkeep droid! Another Corellian whiskey!
