Age of Rebellion v. Edge of the Empire noob question

By Larry Ho-Teep, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Hello Folks,

I wonder if there are any different mechanics between Age of Rebellion and Edge of the Empire, since AoR is a newer setting/books. Is there an improvement or a more streamline approaches to the game?

I am thinking of buying one of the 2. Since they are basically compatible, is it just the info about the setting or there is something more?

Thanks

For the most part all 3 cores are very similar, with the theme/flavor they are geared towards often being the biggest difference between them.

Each has it's own variation on how to tie players to a campaign or plot - Obligation/Duty/forget the 3rd - and each has different equipment, races and professions that make them ultimately worth picking up if you like the settings, but all 3 are absolutely compatible. Realistically, unless you plan on mixing and matching types of campaign you could totally make do with just one (in my humble opinion).

I've run a nominally EotE campaign, but 2 of the 3 players used AoR careers. All the rules are the same. You can mix and match careers as you see fit. As noted, the only real difference is Obligation/Duty/Morality mechanic, but can use any or all or none of them however you like...with a couple caveats:

As far as I know there are no Talents that leverage Obligation. Some AoR careers have Talents that have an impact on the Duty scores, but from what I can tell you can easily buy around them, or, in my case, I just reskinned those Talents to do something related (e.g.: remove setback from Negotiation, etc). There are a couple Talents in the F&D careers that cause Conflict.

Other than that the differences are more about setting and tone.

I would say Edge is what you should get if your players are going to be more motivated by gaining treasure and goodies. Age of Rebellion can certainly be about money but to me Rebels should be focused on money only as far as it pertains getting their mission done. As for content they are very similar and besides the careers and the talents of the new careers. I would say you can get by with the Edge book.
