But....where does this put imperial assault?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Off-Topic

With legion comming on and imperial assault never really having taken off much.is it a reasonable speculation that IA is in a really awkward spot and will go away soon?

I don't play IA but I suppose I should snap up some of the cooler models just to have them.

Imperial Assault hybridized a lot of great game concepts. It looked good for those reasons, but for me it lacked a compelling reason to make the plunge and spend money on it. Most of the people I game had similar feelings.

Legion is a clear attempt to take a bite out of the Warhammer market share with the lure of infinitely more popular Star Wars skin. There's a fair chance FFG succeeds at this. I think it will be more successful than Imperial Assault, but I'm not buying Legion either.

Two different ways of gaming.

IA is a great game to those interested in tabletop games like Descent, Heroquest or Space Hulk. Also excelent if the players are interested in RPGs. Perhaps a little broken if you are a competitive player "I must play only the best".

Legion 15mm for people who relax painting minis, building scenery, etc.

So I am interested in IA but not in Legion. No idea about "the best" one

For me I'll be lured to IA once they release an App for the opponent like Mansions of Madness 2nd ed.

This will allow for some fun co-op tabletop gaming with a group of Rebel friends and a malevolent 'faceless' Empire.

I think that offers IA a great niche over competitive miniatures gaming. (Which I like too, but doubt I'll dive into Legion).

Legion is going to be huge.

IA is also Huge. Perhaps the question is...

Descent or Warhammer 40k? So IA or Legión. Unpainted minis is a handicap for me now. Not 10 years ago. But now...

Imperial Assault is to Descent what Legion is to Warhammer 40k

I like both Descent and WH40k (although I retired from that game).

Both IA and Legion are on my wishlist for spare cash. Whatever that is when X-Wing keeps devouring my game budget.

I admit, I never considered playing Imperial Assault before someone basically made me do it. It's very fun, it just flew way under my radar.

The greatest asset IA has over Legion is that it doesn't take up too much space, especially if you're one to construct your own wargaming terrain for games like Legion or 40k. I'm not looking for a new Infantry Wargame myself, but I may pick up some Legion models to spice up Imperial Assault...

IA is a skirmish campaign boardgame with a sideline of competitive skirmish play AFAICT.

It'll carry on being the former, but I can't see the latter surviving.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and pay someone to paint up my Legion starter set.
