Well, I finally gave in to the game. could use some suggestions

By MandoBard, in X-Wing

I have a small collection set aside to sell off. Full starter and everything. Never thought to eBay it. I wonder what it's worth.

X-wing original core set

YT-2400 freighter

Tie advanced x2

Tie interceptor

Tie phantom

Tie fighter

X-wing

Rebbel Aces

Millennium Falcon

Just keep buying stuff. Only stop when you have everything. This is the only way.

Never as much as you hope(from a guy selling off his HC collection). I'd be interested, problem is I don't have the cash at the moment XD

Edit: well at least in the YT-2400, Rebel aces, Tie interceptor/fighter/phantom. I know that of those that I didn't ask are rarer at the moment(/least till the stock reprint in a month or two)

......And yes folks we now have another member of the "plastic crack anonymous" group. Can we all say hi and welcome.

Shrug, like I said just came off HeroClix. Thing is I got a limited budget at the moment. and I was serious about not getting much or going overboard till I get actually playing it(especially since I kinda need to keep my physical stuff from growing at the moment). And it's not like I went out and bought the C-Roc and the Tanitive IV

And, if you're set on only buying singles, be sure to check out the Mario Kart xwing variants. Great fun without the need for a full collection.

Someone please post that comic, I think it's penny arcade? Mistakes were made...

Noice

And welcome to the game!

Don't be afraid to proxy cards once in awhile, one ship of each as time and money warrant is a good way to go, learn the rules mechanics of the game, even for casual play, and above all have fun!

Thanks, also @TylerTT, I would be interested in some of those at least

I read in another thread that the TFA core set fixes things over the original. Otherwise you need the original core set plus expansions.

So the question is, if you get an original core set ( I prefer original stuff over FO/Resistance) what expansions become mandatory?

It depends on what you want.

If you want to play in a competitive enviroment you need to pick up and play the competitive stuff.

If you don't then buy whatever! most everything in the game is fun to play and interesting if you don't also play against competitive stuff.

TFA core set has a better playing damage deck.

regardless the best second purchase for either core set is Heroes of the resistance. it helps your core set x-wing and the falcon and upgrades in it are great. imperial veterans is the best thing to buy for imperials and guns for hire will be the best thing for scum (most wanted is good but requires more purchases to use fully.)

Pick a faction and then buy as many of the same ship as will fit in 100 points. Do that for each ship and you will have enough. Unless you want to play epic.

Hunh, I'll consider heroes of the rebellion, if my local shop has it I have some store credit I could put towards. Also got in the core today and after reading the rules I see why 2 core sets are recommended between the dice and the ship, so I guess we'll see when the original set reprint happens. Also going hor+imp aces+ guns for hire+ Nym seems like a decent way to start things out without going too plastic crazy. Still got to finish sorting my clixs though

The only thing that it "fixes" is the damage deck, which is a bit more balanced.

Well just added my first additions, though it may be a bit before I get any more. Got the Scurrg and a tie defender to start with. With the ships and upgrades between the three I can now do a 90 point match with imps vs rebels, or a 40 each free for all for fun.

None and All of them. ;-)

The TFA core set does not fix anything really. The damage deck is updated and in general the prefered choice for most lists which rely on unique pilots, but that's about it. The rules may be updated compared to the old core set, but still outdated compared to the current ones avaible as PDF especially considering the large reference guide and FAQ.

So the old core set is imho the better buy still, not only because it comes with much better cards and non-redundant ships (all ships in the TFA core-set are basically useless because they get replaced/need upgrades from expansions which come with the same ships, so you end up with doubles which you may never use together), meanwhile R2-D2 from the old core set is still at the core of nearly all rebel regen strategies and Biggs is still one of the core pieces of Rebel lists in general, while those two standard TIE-Fighters are still useful to build up a TIE-Swarm or to add as blockers into nearly all imperial lists. If you buy all expansions which come with TIE-Fighters you still can use them all together.

So you don't need any mandatory expansions. Now at the other hand, having one of each expansion of the game will open up list building a lot, it the normal recommendation to people who decided to start playing X-Wing long-term. It not mandatory, but usually a decent buying strategie overall and not that expensive either when done over time. Still, the ships you should start with are the ones which you like to fly and test and expand from there into whatever direction you like. If you are interested into the official tournament formats, you might pick up a ship here and there just for the card upgrades, but that's imho fine, because sooner or later you will be able to fly those ships as well in fun lists IF the game is fun enough for you to stick around.

One last thing: Sharing the collection with your significant other seems to be the best way, a full collection is big enough to allow to players to play basically everything they want, you rarely if ever get into conflict about upgrade cards or ships and in the few cases that you do, buying a few extras resolves the issue for cheap. And if your significant other is not into the game after trying it ... well get some kids, until you have one that is into the game ;-)
