Well, I finally gave in to the game. could use some suggestions

By MandoBard, in X-Wing

Or how I learned to love the plastic. To paraphrase an old classic, but not too much

Well, to a starter at least. TFA version, at $26 I decided why not(may have been on amazon, don't worry if I get any single ships it'll be at my FLGS.). Preferred the original, but I didn't want to wait on the reprint any longer... and I mean there's not a local community but I'm going to try to get it going with my board gaming group which is starting to move... somewhat.

That and I really like the models but needed the base. Planning to stick to singles, and just buy a ship or two every month or so, so it isn't a big deal on my rather tight budget(That Nintendo isn't helping :P). While I have a grip on my favorite must haves was thinking I might ask for some suggestions for building a couple small teams(1 or so for each faction) for my buddies to use. Personally want the Scurrg, YT-2400, Arc-170, and the HWK-290. oh and the Star Wing. for rounding out teams I was considering perhaps, the Imp Aces pack. Though not sure how balanced that leaves me on the Scum side, though I imagine that makes it workable on the Rebel side. So any thoughts/suggestions? at this point in time this will be entirely for fun. I've got a little expendable budget since I'm currently not active in any competitive games with blind packs XD

decided a funny witty intro was needed

Buy the ships that most excite you.

For Rebels, if you have a TFA core box, Heroes of the Resistance is an excellent complementary buy. For Imps, with a TFA core, the TIE/FO expansion is the single best self-contained expansion in the game.

Welcome to your new favorite game.

Grab an FO, SF, and Imperial Vetrans to round out your imperial options. Decimator if you're leaning towards a large.

Enjoy!

For beginners, I always say, get what you want after you get a core set.

For Imps and Rebels, it should be easy to get to basic 100pt squads with spending $30 on each faction. Scum is a bit more difficult. The Scurrg is a good starting point. That and the Most Wanted pack should get you to a 100pts. Plus, gives you some more options when you want to expand Scum, like with the HWK that you are interested in.

Welcome to the slippery slope, my friend. I, too, started out thinking "I'll only buy a couple ships and the starter". That... that lasted about a month and I own at least two of everything in one form or another... be better than me... stronger willed...

or just completely fold and cave into the addiction!

Considering I'm just getting out of Heroclix(outside of my 50 or so favorite pieces) I have an idea of what I'm getting into, and some strategies to help me. Well and I'm a Master's student with a tight budget and a switch. I've done a few breakdowns. That and I have no interest in duplicates, and well I still need to find some people to play with XD. If I stick to buying ships through my FLGS that limits my access to when they have stuff in stock which helps(well... unless I find an awesome deal of course. I'm 15 mins from the nearest shop and haven't found a group to plug in with).

That and I'm continuing to go through my Heroclix stuff to try and sell some of the rare/ultra rares online to help fund this a bit.

Honestly prefer the YT-2400 over the Falcon, not sure why, maybe I read and played Shadows of the Empire too many times XD. I also prefer GCW and even some prequel era ships to NT

But I want the Starwing! and the Slave 1, I don't need no ties... well actually I do love the Tie Defender, interceptor and Adv. But depending on when the Starwing comes out, what I may do is go with the Rebel Aces(since I love the R-22 A-wing paint job), and Imp Aces to round out the iconics. depends on what my FLGS has(and my budget). Although there is that massive reprint coming up which should help. With Scum, one possibility would be Scurrg + Hired guns

If your getting a game group in on it then I highly recommend playing multiplayer two teams everyone takes a ship or two.

heroes of the resistance is a great buy and quickly gets your x-wings kitted out. You also get a bunch of great characters from force awakens all at once. Plus even if you don't like the falcon the most I'm sure a freind or two would love to play it.

special forces tie fighters are good

one tie phantom is also a great pick up

Imperial veterans is also a great call. Tie defender and the bomber are fun ships.

the most important advice I can give you is to buy the latest version of any ship first. They always include extra upgrades to make buying the previous version better.

TIE/SF and TIE Aggressor give you more great options for Imperials.

The imminent 'Guns For Hire' could make a good addition to the Scurrg... Though you might need to proxy some Mods to get full use from Vaksai (until your collection exceeds your self-control).

The secondary market is a good way to pick up some of the Mods that come with ships you may not want (or want greater quantities) - every seller of X-Wing cards I've bought from on ebay has packaged them so well.

For your Imp's, probably just proxy Autothrusters (if you buy ships that usually use them) until Kylo's TIE comes out.

Well, there's also the fact that advanced upgrades won't matter a ton to my group for a while if ever. Since I'm the only one with a collection. So I'm not overly worried about upgrades, I'll just work within what I've got

Ya know, I never really set out to buy ties but I bought a core set, won a core set, was gifted a core set, bought 1 Tie expansion and was gifted a Gonzati and suddenly BAM! 9 ties.

To @MandoBard, Welcome!

Get what looks cool, what you love from the movies or books or games or whatever but get the ships that YOU want to get and worry about upgrades or power squads later. Unless you plan on going to regionals or worlds, every ship is useful and fun. If you want to maximize utility for your cash, get a Y-Wing, a Z-95, a HWK and the Most Wanted set and you will have most of what you need to run a 100 point squad for either rebel or scum.

Rebels: Heroes of the Resistance, YT-2400

Imperials: Imperial Veterans, Upsilon Shuttle

Scum: Nym/Scurgg, nothing else screw this faction hahaha. JK pick up Most Wanted or Jumpmasters if you just want to win and don't enjoy flying hahaha

Heh, wish I could win an original coreset, but my FLGS has no X-wing community(although sells enough to merit carrying it. Heck it's ironic since they have a Marvel Legendary community and don't carry it. well I mean they'll bring anything in on request of course), and I never quite get gifted what I ask for.

Interesting suggestion, although now I've imposed on myself a no buying till I've actually gotten someone to play it.

Also @GILLIES291, despite all the moaning I've seen on here recently(started lurking on the FFG forums a couple months ago when Destiny kicked off at a shop I was at, kept lurking star wars since then despite giving up on Destiny[not willing to give any more money to blind packs for ANY game]) A lot of the scum faction seems fun and like it can mix up the game, especially if you go for thematic and fun over competitive. that's why I am seriously think Scurrg/Ships for Hire(or perhaps just a standard Xhiraz and the hounds tooth XD)

Also kinda interested in this scenario based gameplay variant I've heard being thrown around.

Guns for hire is a good call for some interesting builds! And I really enjoy the Scurgg it's a ton of fun, my ace-flying wife doesn't like it quite as much haha. But they can be cool as well, just not Jumpmasters, too easy haha

I sat on about 30 ships for 3 years, only playing maybe 5 or 6 real games during that time when my brother (lives out of state) would come to town. I stopped into a couple FLGS but no one was playing. I found a place where they were trying to organize a league about an hour away and made the drive for about 2 months but it ended up being me and 1 other guy after a couple weeks. Then out of no where I found a place right in town that had only opened about 18 months ago. I happened to walk in the day they had started a league. About 8 of us played for 12 weeks and then had a tournament. We have had a couple months off as people have taken summer vacations but we are about to start again.

So don't lose hope. Keep looking, and even if you just set up some ships on your kitchen table and practice judging maneuver distances, skirting asteroids, setting up arc angles and just generally going pew pew pew around the house, it may payoff in the end. And if you haven't done it yet, check out the Organized Play sub-forum. You can do searches by city or region to find nearby places and players.

Kidding, of course. I find that symmetrical squads really attract me, so I have 4 TIE strikers, 6 TIE/fo's, and 8 TIE interceptors. But I think starting off avoiding duplicates if you're just getting started at this stage of the game's life is a good strategy.

I always recommend that new players make purchases in this order:

1) buy a core set

2) buy another core set (whether it's the original or FA it doesn't matter). For many reasons. First, you will want a damage deck and set of templates for each player, and have 6 of each colored dice is almost mandatory. Only having 3 of each will drive you nuts.

3) buy the ships you love, as many others have already pointed out. You will have a lot more fun flying the ships you love than you will flying some random ship you've never heard of just because the internet says it's good.

One other tip for X-Wing on a budget- fill out your Rebel and Imperial forces first, then add scum further down the line when the budget and player interest is ready for it.

As another noob who just has a TFA Core, can you elaborate on this a bit? What does the TIE/FO have that isn't included in the TFA core?

Well then, we'll see what happens when that original core set reprint happens, maybe I'll find a good deal. They are inflated right now though.

Well the scum speaks to me more than imp and asymmetry makes more sense with them and rebels, but we'll see what happens.

also closest shop is in the town over, and who knows what will pop up here

Different unique pilots, such as the best FO pilot ever Omega Leader.

Different upgrade cards, including two you will want to immediately staple (well, figuratively) to Omega Leader.

The T70 single pack is the same way with the core set T70, but it's less exciting so folks don't consider it essential unless you are going for that + Heroes and doing a triple xwing list.

IMO, the FO single pack is the best value per single pack (not needing other things from another box) an imperial player can make. Though the striker is also pretty good as a standalone pack.

Oh I forgot to mention the other big reason for buying a 2nd core set: it gives you the most ships per dollar (at MSRP prices. If you can catch a great deal on it? Even better!)

Another option for those getting started out: buy someone's collection on eBay. It's a great and overall inexpensive way to get a large collection quickly.

Buying an Ebay collection actually sounds like a good idea for me, and seems like a cost effective way to get a bunch of ships(although you have to be careful on cards)... cept I'll have to save up a few months to actually be able to buy a good one since they seem to be around the $150 range. Well and no guarantee of getting an intact starter with one either. we'll have to see how things go
