Guardian and Shields

By sashlon, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hello everyone,

I'm a new player and I have a question I can't seem to find an answer for.

How does the Guardian ability interact with Shields? If I guardian damage to a character with Shields do the Shields take the damage or not?

Thanks in advance for clarification.

Yes you remove shields if you guardian. As far as I know

The guardian takes the damage on themselves, not any character, and the shields must block the damage first, it isn't optional. There is unblockable damage that bypasses shields, granted by special abilities but that usually doesn't come into play with guardian taking damage from a die and removing it. One popular exception would be vibroknife and only if that die were in play.

Say what?

No damage taken by a Guardian is ever unblockable. Guardians don't resolve the enemy's die, they remove it and deal damage equal to its value to themselves. So even a Vibroknife can be Guardian'ed onto a shield.

Rules Reference (page 18):

" GUARDIAN

Before a character with Guardian activates, its owner may remove one die showing damage (ranged or melee ) from their opponent’s dice pool to deal damage equal to the value showing on the die removed to the activating Guardian character. "

Weird copy from PDF formatting

Yeah, that is right, they revised the guardian text from resolve to remove.

Once it's removed by a Guardian, the Vibroknife dice is no longer melee damage. It's just generic damage (similar to damage from Force Throw). Basically, Guardian lets you Force Throw an enemy damage dice at yourself.

Yeah, I just forgot they changed it from resolve to remove, so there is no resolve effects when a die is guardianed.

Yep, it's just dumb, because the reminder text on the cards still says "resolve", not "remove".

Actually it never was resolve but remove in RR. It's that mistake on the guardian's AWK/SOR cards with italic text that confuses people. They fixed that text in EaW and new starter.

Thanks.

Was playing with Obi and he had Shields on him and was Guardianing damage from Rey to Obi and removing Shields from him before taking damage. But after the game I wondered if I'd played it correctly.

Anything that deals damage, or says takes damage, will be stopped by shields.

If damage is moved, it ignores shields. And just to be complete, unblockable damage is damage that is deal but ignores shields (they cannot be used to stop it, and they do not get removed).
