The Orville

No I have not. I've heard pretty much the same thing though. I'm tempted to check it out but am concerned that I'll be too critical of it because from what I hear it doesn't adhere to what I think of as Star Trek.

I know right I've heard some praise but it doesn't sound like the kind of praise I'd like to hear from a star trek. Seems like they want to be more like the new movies.

I've heard it's more of a war story and I've always seen Trek as an exploration and discovery type of show where they fight when they have to. If I could separate it from the Trek name then I'd probably actually enjoy it

Battlestar trek: the new explosion

@Megatronrex have you seen discovery yet? Was talking to my boss at work and he said that it would be a decent SciFi if it didn't have the star trek name attached to it. Generally speaking he's on the money most of the time for tv shows. I was wondering if you had a take on it?

Discovery is a terrible Trek show and an average SciFi show. Orville, sans the minor comedic elements, is what Discovery should have been. Nothing about this show is what Trek is based on. Pure rubbish.

I'm glad Roddenberry isn't around to see his vision/baby/lore violated.

That does seem to be the prevailing opinion

Shame really, good scifi is hard to find. People do have some expectaions when is comes to the enshrined scifi franchises. George Lucas the man behind star wars got blown out of the friggin water for doing 3 political intruige movies with the star wars name (not commenting on quality here just the core of the story). If you here, you do have the same form of expectations from star trek.... wich is a huge problem if you want to do a gritty morally grey show ( al la battlestar galactica). Yes star trek has some serious dark at times, but it is alway used as a contrast and never for longer than an episonde or two. All ghe best villans that are recurring in star trek are deep nuanced charaters, yeah they might litteraly be a natzi labor camp cammendant (gul dukat) but they are relateable with very human and sometimes very good reasons for the wrongs that they do. Their best villans are shades of grey both capable of good and evil, all the while being relateable and leaving you with the question to contemplate 'would i be any difrent if placed in those shoes?'

Im just not reading/hearing any of the finer points of star trek to make it worth the extra 5 or 6 bucks it would cost a month just to see Discovery. I find the Orville really scratches that itch for me. So help me it had better cone out on netflix or something so i can cast final jujement.

I thought last night's episode was great. This show gets more and more like Trek every time I watch it.

Odd, I thought that was the worst episode, and I haven't liked any of them.

I couldn't get past Mudd magically turning into a Q, having somehow obtained all the codes to Discovery, destroying his time looper for no reason, and somehow, as a "Q", being unarmed in 2 seconds out of nowhere. WTF? Stooppid!

I was referring to the Orville not to Discovery. I still haven't seen any of that yet and it looks like I won't see it until I get to watch it for free.

I wanted to address this part seperately

WHAT THE ACTUAL F***??

That sounds truly absurd.

Seconded. I am speechless.

So if you watched the episode you'd understand that Harry Mudd isnt Q or remotely close and that assumption is utterly ridiculous. Its simply he's gone through so many time loops (from hundreds to possibly thousands) that he's figured out how to hack the Discovery's main systems. That's not unreasonable for the character we know from TOS. A feat mind you that is true of a variety of characters in every series. Look at all the episodes in which the Enterprise D's systems were hacked or a shuttle was stolen?

The entire concept of the time loop scenario such as in Groundhog Day is you never know how many loops there ever were. In Groundhog Day it seems only like Bill Murray was only in the time loop for a few weeks but according to the writers and Director he was actually in there for a century relative to his perspective (actually a day to everyone else) with the added bonus his body didn't age.

The same goes for Mudd's supposed killing spree. Mudd, isnt a killer and still isnt. His massacre of Discovery crew only happens because Mudd knows he isnt killing permanently (after all he's going to start a new loop). That changes entirely the gravitas disintegrating someone has, sure it'll be uncomfortable for them for a few moments but its not a permanent state and they'll be back to live their lives with no real harm being done. That's entirely in his character from TOS.

The more loops Mudd goes through, the less violent he goes through.

Thanks for the explanation @Forresto . That sounds more reasonable than him turning into a Q. I still can't say it makes me want to watch it though. I'd never heard that about Groundhog Day, that's pretty cool.

Orville renewed for season 2 I read.

I would've been happier with that episode if he was actually turned into Q. It would have given more plausibility to him waving his hands to make crew members disappear, having an energy field follow him around the ship to stop phase fire, and a bunch of other ridiculous situations.

I won't even get into the moronic and contrived use of the F-bombs, the spinny-cams, poor use of lightning, stiff-as-a-board Klingon costumes, and don't get me started on the Tilly character, hah. The show is pure rubbish for a Trek.

Just don't watch Discovery as Trek, or at least not as being in the prime universe. It's rather tolerable if you think it's from the Abramsverse.

Lumping it into the Abramsverse does NOT make it more appealing. I'd be perfectly content to never see any more of JJ's vision for Trek.

I actually couldn't agree more with the statement above <_<

Couldn't they just of not put star trek in front of it. Ya know people are allowed to come up with new shows, you don't have to put a venerated title in front of it for it to sell (if it's any good). My suspicion is that discovery may not have been strong enough to stand without the star trek name to prop it up. I won't know till I watch it though.

I'm pretty sure CBS was counting on the Trek name to boost subscription numbers for their streaming service.

Bad move they may just kill it if nobody like their flagship product.

A lot of people subscribed to try it, and will forget to cancel,.. that’s a win as far as they are concerned.

The fact it was subscription streaming meant, basically, I couldn’t even consider it... Fir a while at the start, it was US only locked...

Here in the Netherlands, Discovery is available on Netflix, which makes our life a whole lot easier. Well, it would if we had any intention of watching it.

That's the biggest stink. The rest of the world gets Discovery on Netflix. Only the US is forced into the CBS online BS.

I think Orville is doing great, but it still feels off. It seems like Seth wants to do a serious SciFi Star Trek homage, but Fox is forcing him to include 6th grade level humor. So a lot of the stuff that would really punch above his weight falls flat because just when the point is about to be hammered home, someone drops a genital joke. I thought their last episode was pretty good, and it tried to stay away from the really low brow stuff, but even so, when it did drop a joke, it was more of a 'how I met your mother' sitcom style joke that you know someone wanted to put a laugh track behind. Star Trek had a way to make you laugh without it feeling like it was a joke built for a studio audience.

I'm glad it's doing good. And I hope another season will allow it to work out a few minor kinks and really hit it's stride.

Canada doesn't get it on Netflix.

Here, its on CraveTV... A wholly different Subscription service.
