The Orville

That's the biggest stink. The rest of the world gets Discovery on Netflix. Only the US is forced into the CBS online BS.

I think Orville is doing great, but it still feels off. It seems like Seth wants to do a serious SciFi Star Trek homage, but Fox is forcing him to include 6th grade level humor. So a lot of the stuff that would really punch above his weight falls flat because just when the point is about to be hammered home, someone drops a genital joke. I thought their last episode was pretty good, and it tried to stay away from the really low brow stuff, but even so, when it did drop a joke, it was more of a 'how I met your mother' sitcom style joke that you know someone wanted to put a laugh track behind. Star Trek had a way to make you laugh without it feeling like it was a joke built for a studio audience.

I'm glad it's doing good. And I hope another season will allow it to work out a few minor kinks and really hit it's stride.

Pretty much because I think Netflix paid for a huge portion of the show's budget under the idea they would get to put it on their platform, but CBS wants to try and have their own streaming service, so bleh. I watched the premier on TV, and that was horrid, the show being delayed because of the football game and instead of ending on a cliff hanger it just sort of ended, like you are watching the show and then commercial break hits and when it comes back 'oh its over, you can come see the rest on our platform!' I might think about doing a free sub after the season is done to just watch it all, but the more I hear about it the less I want to do that, especially with CBS forcing you to watch adds on their program.

Orville is so much more the trek show I wanted, and while I'm not a huge fan of the comedy at times, the ideas, and feel to it is much more what I'd like, oh and relatively likable characters instead of the mess that is Michael in trek.

Haven't watched any Discovery.

I like Orville, but I wish it was just ... more. There's no emphasis on being funny, even though it's a comedy - and that's fine: it doesn't have to be the next Family Guy. It's really more of a drama that doesn't take itself seriously. I think that it's just a little bit too episodic, really: there have been a lot of great story arcs/plot hooks, but I don't feel like they've really done anything with them so far. That's disappointing.

Otherwise, an enjoyable show. There's a bit of character growth, which is nice to see, so it's not like they are just doing monster of the week stuff. I'm just not entirely satisfied.

I kind of feel they are probably going for it being episodic more like TNG, which I don't mind, and is different from most shows now days that push story arc more. I generally prefer story arc shows, but with the discovery nature of Trek I feel the episodic format works best with some arcs here and there to help develop the characters.

I am so sick of every show feeling like it needs a big 3 season arc.... I think there is a place on TV right now for something that walks the balance between serious and light hearted, with characters we care about, but an easy to swallow episodic format that someone can jump into easily without having to watch 4 seasons of back-catalog.

Reminds me a lot of like Quantum leap - where it tried to be funny, and heart felt, and had a "big story arc" but really it was pretty simple and background, even though every once and a while something important would happen to move it forward- it was really about the week to week discovery.

Agree to disagree, I guess. There's plenty of middle ground between a three-season arc and an overarching plot, though.

I don't know the whole lost Esq style of show is kinda wearing on me though. Everyone wants to do it but very few do it well, so most of the time it just turns to agitation. So when it comes down to it the Orville palys to it's strength in its method of story telling, not everything has to be a multiple season resolution. But as you said it's more about preference than anything, so as always it come down to you the viewer at home and what do you think. :)

For what it's worth, I don't think we are really disagreeing that much. I don't think that Orville has hit it's stride yet, and hopefully it should get better, and the overarching plot CAN come more into play in a way that still fits with the episodic nature. I actually think they are kinda playing it safe, seeing what tests well. Do people care about the relationship story? Cool then they can arc into that. Don't care? Then let's arc into the hostilities that are afoot. That doesn't work? Ok let's find something new. By not committing hard to an arc early they are hopefully setting themselves up to do something that will keep the show running and not suffering the fate of every other Fox sci-fi show that get's axed just before its popularity blows up.

At least they got a second season confirmed.

That's good news I didn't see that!

I looked shortly at a list of Fox shows with additional episodes ordered and didn't see it listed so was a tiny bit concerned, but I will admit I have been pretty far detatched from anything resembling following the actual network workings for the show.

Episodic is very "Star Trek." And that's fine. I'm not advocating for something like GoT or Daredevil where it takes the entire season (or more) to tell the story. I'm thinking something more like Lucifer or Sherlock, where there's a different story every week that spends a little time in each episode advancing a season-long story. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but in the episode with Charlize Theron, there was a huge opportunity there that I'd love to see explored in more depth.

As I don't watch Lucifer or Sherlock ill take your word for it!

Hopefully we see more of that stuff as time goes on.

Sherlock is a good modern take on sir Conan Doyle iconic character it's worth a watch if your in the mood for mystery. It's clever well written and British. I will warn you if your expecting basil wrathbone, or Jeremy Bret, (that late Victorian vibe) you may be a little disappointed. But thankfully you will get no Downey Jr. Vibe. It's a good show give it a try, when your in the mood for it.

In all fairness, I think you'd have to acquire the accent as well. Perhaps even the talent. ;)
