Counting factions and upgrades...

By tgall, in Runewars Miniatures Game

So for the purposes of data:

Daqan 7 expansions - 2 not yet released

Latari 6 expansions - 6 not yet released

Uthuk 5 expansions - 5 not yet released

Waiqar 7 expansions - 2 not yet released

Feels like we have probably 1 Latari and 2 Uthuk expansions yet to be announced, least in the short term. Makes me wonder tho how many more expansions per army we'll see. Does FFG pause at 7 ... 8, 9 per army?

Course then the next question is how much of what isn't yet released is going to be out before worlds?

whats on the boat right now MIGHT be out for worlds but i doubt it.

Initially i expected them to bring up elves/uthuk to be on par with the daqans/waiqar but then they announced wraiths and scouts, so i have no idea now. They may bulk-release the others to catch them up or always keep the first two races slightly ahead to avoid them being "stagnated" for 8ish months while they work on the other factions.

I would wager the missing Latari are another specialist unit and the missing Uthuk are archers and a specialist. But I'm logical and therefore typically wrong about what companies do.

The only thing we can count on is Uthuk will almost certainly get a ranged unit of some kind. Anything beyond that is shrouded in mystery.

I think the bigger issue is parity. It's going to be an interesting dance to catch up the Latari and Uthuk with the Daqan and Waiqar while keeping the interest of the Daqan and Waiqar players. If they don't bring equality in the factions soon (Holiday season/ early next year say) I can see the popularity of this game stagnating and FFG trying to generate interest from ground zero... again.

I do agree that the new factions should catch up eventually. But as long as every faction is getting a steady stream of new stuff, and every faction has access to all the neutral upgrades, does it really matter that much if 1 faction has an extra expansion compared to another?

They can catch up the Uthuk and the Latari pretty quick. They'll probably double-down on the wave w/ Wraiths and Scouts for each faction, so they all hit 7 simultaneously? The fact that these are unpainted minis makes the printing process faster I believe? (certainly cheaper)

Well how competitive are Latari right out of the core with Daqan right now? Sure they can catch up and casually I can proxy hunters guile or whatever, but we dont know what hidden gems are in the box.

I'm just thinking of the FFG model for all the rest of their living games. There is always an equivalent release for all factions in x-wing and armada and all the lcgs. The only time there wasnt was when scum came out for x-wing, but they leveraged a lot of existing models for other factions and caught up pretty dang quick. Now they're back to equivalent releases. This leads me to think they eventually want to equate all 4 factions. Especially since this is intended to be a "collect only one faction" game.

If FFG follows other wargame's paths, than there won't necessarily be an equal number of units/expansions per faction.

For me the true test will be if FFG can make each faction diverse enough that multiple list types could be designed from one faction. For example, when I used to play WFB Dwarves, the two major styles were "gunline" (lots of shooty dwarves) or "brick" (lots of high armor infantry). You could get two distinct playstyles from the same army. I'm hoping for something similar in RW.

But they have their own living game path. And WFB and 40k have been notorious for single faction power creep, and many players left the games becasue of it. I would hope (and I think they will) FFG take the lessons learned of what makes X-Wing, and their LCGs so successful and applies it to Runewars. Balance is key to making a game fun and playable.
