Epic First Order

By MaxPower, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Since the introduction of the subfactions, I always separate FO and my beloved Imps. In epic, so far, I always stuck to Imps since the FO has too little options...

I do own 3 sf, 7 fo, 1 upsilon though.

With the silencer in arrival, this lack of options is about to change. Sooo... Does this list exite you as much as me?

Kylo Ren (TIE Silencer) (35)

Is it Epic without epic ships? I guess without them it's just a 300Points Standard game.

Yes. Epic format is 300 points, 6x3 play area, 12 obstacles (placed in pairs). There is no requirement to include huge ships.

It excites me - although nothing stopping you taking a Gozanti with docked TIE/FO or TIE/SF Fighters. It just needs a paint job for full thematics :)

I think it looks awesome! My only concern is that 119 points are tied up in a total of 8 shields and 12 hull in your elite fighters...actually that might not be so bad. 11 ships is pretty good. The Epsilon Sq. Pilots ought to be able to put in some work because they will be ignored. Loving Swarm Leader on Omega Ace!

It's true there's no requirement to field an Epic ship, but you need epic ships to play an epic game.

Technically they're not Epic ships; they're huge ships. I used to think fighters vs. huge ships was unfair, but in my experience the modifications really helped.

To save my buttocks: when we play epic, we usually play 300 + 135 in huge ships. Otherwise the escorts just look tiny.

About the points in the elites: they are quite sturdy and token stacking via hux, so they should last a bit. Also, agi 3 goes a long way...

Size matters not when judging epicness

I'm playing 2v2 400 points per side this weekend and we've agreed to field Raider/Gozanti v Corvette/Transport... there isn't that much room for small ships. Should be very interesting.

With a fair component of Upsilon Shuttles, you can effectively play 'epic ship' by flying several in close proximity.

A good, simple 'component' element for an epic squad (less named pilots, easy to plan and manage) is Weapons Guidance/Crack Shot/Omega Squadron Pilot - at 20 points its easy to build nice round number blocks, and they shoot early enough to pilot-skill kill a lot of generics.

Starkiller Base Pilots also offer a lot of useful features - throw in a load of Operations Specialists and Systems Officers and they can throw out a lot of tokens without ever needing to use their actions.

Omega Ace is good, Kylo and Omega Leader less so - any ship specialising in arc dodging or one-on-one duels is not a great pick for a 300 point furball.

Yep, yep. I fully support both of these statements, especially the Weapons Guidance TIE/fo's.

Hmm... I think the 2 points more for comm relay+juke are well spent...

EDIT: Thinking on it... perhaps not :D

I agree. A huge ship should be a requirement. Too much of an unfair advantage to not have one.

Sure, you don't _need_ a huge ship, but the rule of cool dictates that you _should_ have one ;)

The Raider doesn't look especially out of place supporting First Order ships (see SW Battlefront II, in fact...)

Oh - the other big trick the first order have up their sleeves for epic:

Remember that you can deploy up to range 2 into the board, and your opponent does the same. Turn 1 exchanges of fire are the norm.

Hyperwave Comm Scanner .

A couple of Epsilon Squadron Pilots so equipped can provide free focus and evade tokens to your entire epic squad, if you can plonk them down in the correct position. Deploying at PS0 is a problem, but you'll at least get to see where the enemy's corvette/transport is, and line up on that.

I really like the idea of hyperwave comm scanner for turn 1 aggression. Gotta squeeze it in for stridan, it gives the ship an even more epic centerpiece feel. I think ill just drop the comm relay on zeta leader.

Indeed. Or Lieutenant Dormitz - a sizeable Hyperwave-equipped element supported by the Lieutenant can really mess up an enemy squad in epic: Dormitz can deploy at range 2 in, then they can deploy at range 2 of him, and you can be on people's flanks on turn 1.

Hyperwave Comm Scanner isn't limited either, so you could use both those tech slots for it. Then Dormitz alone can give your whole squad focus+evade for the first round in order to attack an enemy Huge ship.

You've got to be careful with TIEs since they can't do much damage to AGI 3+ targets at the best of times. Since there's a natural tendency to put more AGI 3 ships in Epic lists (your entire list, for example, is entirely AGI 3 ships except Stridan). Because of this, you really need to give them better offensive mods in order to get mileage out of them. I always recommend Snap Shot with an escorting Operations specialist, but I'm not sure you have the points for it. Maybe ditch the Zeta specialist and give all the F/Os Snap shot, then throw in a final PS 1 F/O as a blocker?
