Buying Multiple Boxes: Worth it?

By MSpookshow, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello everyone,

When WFRP3 came out, I somehow managed to resist the temptation to purchase it. I was perfectly happy with v2, so no need to buy into a new edition, despite the fact that I feel FFG puts out some of the best quality gaming material period. Needless to say, eventually it called to me again, and after reading some posts / reviews of it both here and at rpg.net, I broke down and purchased it (from Amazon, though, so that did knock about $40 off the price tag).

In short, I absolutely love it. I haven't got a chance to actually run the game yet, though for the first time in all my years of gaming, I'm actually going to have a "demo night" for my group, just to show them how awesome it is before I get a campaign together.

Now on to the question: I have a $20 gift certificate for Amazon. If I use that on a second core box, it will only cost about $40, which together with the first box I bought, would equal the price of buying it at a store. 2 for 1, baby! I'm having trouble wrapping my head around whether or not this is worth it, though, so I was wondering if anyone here has purchased two (or maybe you have access to two because a player also bought one?), or if people with experience running / playing the game can tell me if it would be awesome to have two sets worth of materials available?

Our group will definitely buy at least 2, maybe even 3.

Why?

You get 36 dice (which would cost you around 30 dollars if bought alone), "support" for 3 more players (in our group: finally the GM can make all those progress trackers he is told to make *g*) and all action, traits, whatever cards. As we allow more than 1 player to take the same action/trait/whatever, its more than a good idea.

I purchased two core sets simply because our group usually has 5 players + GM. We'd need lots of dice and enough action cards for everyone.

Good info so far, thanks for the responses!

I doubt I will have more than 3 players. My gaming group has basically disbanded and I will be forming one specifically for WFRP3. Card-wise, I suppose I will be fine. I can always use a scanner to copy cards if it's really necessary.

The benefits of buying a second core box from my standpoint seem to be:

  • More dice - Always good.
  • More chits & doodads - Have people had issues with having too few of any of the different tokens? Regardless, it's probably never bad to have more.
  • Double the standees - This is a plus for me I suppose .... though I'm looking to make my own standees anyways or just use real minis.
  • More copies of cards in general - This would probably allow me to have a copy of everything the players have as a GM, which could be handy. This could be accomplished with a scanner though. Having four copies of each condition card instead of just two would probably be ace.

The major things seem to be dice and tokens. I've thought about buying 3 dice sets, although I'm a bit unhappy about how many misfortune dice are included. Although I'm not sure I would actually need a lot of them.

I own 3. (1 is a demo day kit)

Now I have enough basics for 11 players (I own two toolkits).

I may just end up buying two of several products for the extra cards and bits.

I should point out that I'm ONLY doing this because I love the game that much. If it was any other RPG I probably wouldn't have even bought into it originally because the core box didn't provide enough for my group. That said, I feel this game is THE best RPG I've ever played. As such I'm willing to throw more money at it. The sad part of this, due to the high cost and wanting to own extra bits, I'm unlikely to pay full retail at a brick and mortar store when I can save a bundle buying from amazon or an internet dealer.

I run with four players and a gm. We have the basic set and the adventurers toolkit. The main thing we need is dice. But if I'm going to spend money for extra dice, why not go ahead and spend a bit more and get an extra set of books and cards. My rule book has been spending a week at each player's house so everyone has a chance to read through it. The extra cards takes away some of the worry about a card going missing. I'll probaby get another copy of the basic set, but it will be from an on-line dealer where I can get a discount. If you already have a $20.00 gift certificate to Amazon, then go for it.

A second box set certainly has value, but I'd suggest picking up the adventure toolkit and an extra dice kit you'll basically be getting them for free at this point. Then decide later on if you need a second core set. Better you try and talk another player into getting a core set.

I would say no for you.

Let your players chip in to get the other box. Why should you have to fork over the dinero for it?

I GM our group and have two core boxes and 1 tooklit. I traded for one core box and bought the other. I am glad to have the extra cards and dice, but am not sure that I'd have ended up with two if I didn't work out a trade for one of them. One of my players bought the extra books off of me so I feel that everyone won out in the end. We have four regular players plus me GMing and a possible 5th and 6th player so I'm sure that I'll get good use out of all of the extra bits. If it was just 3 players and me GMing I'm sure that I'd have stuck with just one set, though.

Interesting idea. Buy the box and sell off the individual pieces to your players that you don't need..... That has merit. You could make a fortune. :)

Yeah, a proper chargen auction with real money. Now what am I bid for this mint condition Rapid Fire?

I see you picked up on my sarcasm and took it a step further.... Bravo!!!

Down with e-bay sellers that take advantage of hobbyists such as ourselves.

Funny enough, down the road when you've lost or had that Rapid Fire card stolen.... and ebay auction might not be such a bad idea.
