Non-tier 1 builds

By Ram, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Virtual competition: If you were to build a squad that is not tier 1, not using any or at least only a few of the tier 1 power pieces/combos but still want to give the top bands a run for their money and if possible have some really cool elements that provides interesting challenges for the opponent, what would you play? A few Words on how to play it adds extra icing.

Winner gets a link to the picture of the promo of their choice and pools of online glory.

Droid Uprising! Defintely not all off meta pieces as IG 88 is the centerpiece but this list is about keeping him alive and letting him do his thing. Shadow him with 3PO and MHD to give the extra evade and recover whatever health he loses and then send BT-1 to clean up whatever survives the first salvo. Use 0-0-0 as a distraction and if they don't deal with him he hits surprisingly hard. Jawas will run around and generally be annoying and take objectives if needed.

My favorite non-tier 1 unit is Davith Elso. He has the very useful spy trait, he is insanely fast with 5 speed and an ability that can get him 2 spaces of movement, and his command card can be really useful. His major flaw is that he doesn't do enough damage to justify his cost, and if he doesn't trigger fell swoop (which is very possible with all the surge cancels going around now) then he's almost worthless.

Here's my Luke's Apprentice list: http://ia-armies.com/army/rAagepwT

Luke's Apprentice | 40 points

Deployment Cards
---------------------------

▪ Luke Skywalker (Jedi)
▪ Obi-Wan Kenobi
▪ Davith Elso
▪ Murne Rin
▪ Mak Eshka’rey
▪ Gideon Argus
▪ C-3PO
▪ C1-10P

Command Cards
------------------------

Fleet Footed
Planning
Pummel
Pummel
Take Initiative
Urgency
Son of Skywalker
Negation
Heart of Freedom
Intelligence Leak
Strategic Shift
Comm Disruption
Force Rush
Force Surge
Blitz

The strategy is to get right up in your opponents face with Luke, Davith and Obi-wan. With 5 command cards that give bonus movement, it shouldn't be difficult to get into a position to utilize Pummel. With all the Spy cards you should have very strong command card control. This list is strong against bonus block units like Vader, Rancor, IG-88 and should do OK against command card dependent lists like Bantha. Your opponent will have a hard choice of focusing down your heavy hitting force users, or taking out your spy units.

I don't think Obi-Wan is top tier either due to his speed and lack of reach, but he does hit like a truck!

Awesome list! The evil imp robots are my go-to guys for out of the box thinking and that list looks really nice and fun to play. Guess one has to be careful not to get IG88 focused down too early though even though he is one tough cookie.

Very nice list indeed. Opponent will have a pretty tough time keeping out of reach of the speed boosted jedi windmills in that one.

I'm always tweaking and experimenting with my Kayn Somos list. Firing Squad is really fun to order especially if you can attack first and then hand out a focus with Squad Command. His command card is excellent and well worth 3 points when used with the right units. Advanced Com Systems is an absolute must which unfortunately makes him even more over-costed than he already is. His major weakness, aside from cost, is the need to rely on officers to get in position, which makes him slow, predictable, and far below tier-1. But I still enjoy rolling him out in non-competitive games.

The current iteration of my Sugar Kayn list surrounds him with Terro and some E.Jetties, backed up with Snow Troopers and Imperial Officers. The idea being that Terro leads the charge, followed by the Jets, and then Kayn cleans up with an attack and a focused Firing Squad. (if you're lucky you can draw Single Purpose and To the Limit to pull off that double Firing Squad combo!) The officers' first priority is to get Kayn moved up with objectives/terminals secondary if possible. The Snow troops can pick up the slack with objective duty and also be on hand to pass out a heal or condition clear. Sounds good in theory until the dying starts! ;P

I like the beasts.

Rancor (10)
Bantha (9)
eNexu (6)
eNexu (6)
MHD-19 (5) <-- Maybe swap out Greedo/Hired Guns for TA/MHD/C3PO if you want to try to get easy obj points.
C3P0 (2)
Temp Alliance (1)
Beast Tamer (1)

Crush (3)
Grisly Contest (2)
Jundland Terror x2 (4)
Miracle Worker (2) <-- totally annoying and useful card
Size Advantage (2)
Ferocity (1)
Survival Instincts (1)
Element of Surprise (0)
Opportunistic (0)
Parry (0)
Position Advantage (0)
Take Initiative (0)
To the Limit (0)
Urgency (0)

The idea of this is to rush the enemy back line (weequays, rangers, etc) with the eNexus and Bantha. Use Beast Tamer on Bantha Round 1 to get him there. Use it on the Rancor Round 2.
In general, if you can draw first blood, you'll usually win. Downside is you only have 4 damage dealers. Upside is they all take at least 2-3 enemy activations to die. In case it had to be said: won't be going for objectives here.

I've run 2 lately with some success.

Tranny Rodeo

Bossk

Greedo

Vinto

2x grey trandoshans

2x hired guns

black market to get the card draw

and the second list

Rancor

Bantha

Jabba

2x red nexu

Thinking of dropping reds to grey to fit another in though. so fast and cause people issues. plus taking up more space than the deployment zone is so much fun!

I looooove the Rancor, and particularly love a double Rancor list (my typical one is: Beast Tamer, Rancor x2, eQuay, rQuay, Jabba or Onar, and Devious).

For the next Reddit Tourney I'm trying out a wonky list I've never run before:
Beast Tamer
Rancor
Nexu
ePigs
Hired Guns
Onar
Rebel Care Package
Devious

I have no idea how it will play, but it should be fun!

I just played in our store championship against @wannabepudge and @seef1033 with what I went into it feeling like would be a competitive list but probably not go the distance. We played four games and I ended up sweeping it somehow. Took out a Terro/2x Ejets/BT-1 list, the 2/3rds Tinker swarm of pudge, seef's Iggy/2x Equay's and supports list, and then a 10 act scum list to finish the day.

My list was:

Nexu

Nexu

Nexu

Jabba

Greedo

Onar

E Jawa

E Weequay

Black Market

Beast Tamer

I had a blast playing it too. Almost every game I felt like something died way too fast on my team (one game two of my Nexu melted and I thought I was gonna lose). But those three nexu just ended up being too much for the other teams to chew through. And Onar jumping in on their heels and getting ordered to hit is so good. Along with him throwing an evade on a nexu each round usually. It's a rather versatile list :)

The Red Glowstick Rave

  • Emperor Palpatine 8
  • Darth Vader 18
  • The Grand Inquisitor 9
  • Maul 7
  • Driven by Hatred -5
  • Temporary Alliance 1
  • Channel the Force 1
  • either Motivation or Rule by Fear, depending on how many new juicy Force User cards are in the next wave 1

Most probably will be terribad, but I'll play it a couple times anyway.

Uh-oh, you accidentally cheated.

Onar can only "Get Down" for a small figure.

Well, I definitely didn't catch that until just now. Touché. Sorry about that guys. I probably only got to do it about once a game and I know I used it for Onar at least a couple times during the day. But that will never slip by me again now :)

I'll say the nexu do a really good job getting in front of Onar and keeping people from focusing on him though so you can come in behind the nexu to just wreck.

Many awesome lists up there! I miss the plan of execution stuff in some of them though! Its very interesting to hear about the general game plans, angle of attack, who goes in first etc.

Really nice list. I really like Kayn a lot, but have a bit of a hard time finding a home for him but this looks like a real nice approach.
