When is the collection big enough?

Commissioning isnt cheap. It can easily more than double what you paid for to get the models.

I consider time investment as a cost. I get paid to stream video games in my spare time, so taking time to do painting literally costs me money.

I can tell you that personally, I got into painting (my first time ever) to have something to do with my solo-spare time that was board game related. I didn't know what to expect, but I've been enjoying it.

Just dont get overzealous with it (paint too many models at once, paint a massive model, try a technique way out of your skill level)

I got a bonus at work so i bought a Gargantuan Squiggoth for 40k with said bonus. That model is massive and so rugged its actually a pain in the *** to paint...i still havnt finished it and it kinda discouraged me from painting for quite awhile because it was so freaking annoying to paint. I dont want to touch that thing for a long time.

Thats why i still dont have my 2cores +2command +2spear +1calv +hawthorne of Daqans painted yet. I got about 1/3 of it done, got that Squiggoth, and stopped painting almost entirely because that thing pissed me off so much lol.

I paint 8 rank and file and then paint a character?

Rank and file get 4 to 6 colors. Archer got chain mail greaves, oak brown bow and shafts, leather brown armor, and red cloak and red fetching.

The character get a much more detail job so they pop.

Big blocks of infantry like this game demands... I try to just be as lazy as I can, always remembering that in huge groups you can barely make out individual details anyhow.

... and I still have way too many reanimates left to paint.

I can't stop myself. When somebody likes your army, they invariably ask, "May I see one of your Reanimates." I want mine to impress under scrutiny, which is insane, I know. That's why I'm just now finishing up the Waiqar units from my first core. And they're still not even that spectacular, first time painting and all. I don't even have basing done yet.

Nevertheless, I am thoroughly enjoying the journey! It is so much fun!

This, learning that over time, particularly with elves. The rank and file becomes blobs anyway on the table.

Bingo. I've done three colors and a wash on all of my infantry, but last night I decided to highlight a tray of Reanimates. I put them on the table next to the others, stepped back to a normal gaming distance, and said "NOPE, NOT WORTH IT!"

Oh yeah well one of my golems has 7 layers just on the rock ? (my spears had like 6-7 colours, only 1 highlighted. My elves have 5? Still in proto stage. Wanted 4 but feel it needed the 5th to break it up (skin, hair, armour, clothe, sheathe/quiver)

My spearmen dont get any highlights other than the cloth, and i only do that because that one stands out too much to not do. The armor highlights i do is subtle enough to only really notice on larger models anyway. In fact i forgot to do it on one of my golems and when i had them side by side i noticed my diorite golem shoulderpads were oddly dark..oops...

My waiqar scheme is literally 3 colors and 2 washes anyway, even the heroes dont get much more than that. Antlers get more attention, but thats it lol. "Black metal" as i call it kinda removes the need for edge work when done right (basically black with a little bit of silver to give it a metallic shine, but its still mostly jet black in color)

I dunno, since you'll see them from above most of the time, I think it's worth it to highlight the head, shoulders and cape.

Never :P

Exactly! ?

I'm mostly playing Daqan and are currently working on paiting a complete Cavalry Army led by Hawthorne!

When I'm done i want to try a complete Ranged Army led by Kari.

By the time I will be done with that I'm sure there'll be a third hero with a third style I would like to try.

And then there's the other factions... ?... no ... never!

My friend who I split 2 cores with is giving me his Waiqar stuff when he moves in a few months. On the one hand, he's awesome and I'm very grateful. On the other hand, I never expected to have more than 1 army for this game, so it's slowly dawning on me the curse he has put upon me. I think I'll need to either go broke or pick a side, and to be honest right now I'm looking at the Death Knights and Wraiths and leaning towards Waiqar.
