Coolest thing I've seen on these forums in a long while. Congrats! When you finish the design will you put it on thingiverse?
3D printed hangars to contain ships
6 hours ago, citruscannon said:I've kept the tolerances for the fit of the base very low (0.4mm) which will likely be bumped up a bit before I print this, but apparently 0.2mm error is the required tolerance for the printer I'm using. I'd like the ships to be *almost* snug.
Keep in mind that 3D printing doesn't always produce the smoothest results. If it's snug(ish), then it may wear and scratch the cardboard after a while. You may want to consider giving it a little extra clearance and then sticking some thin foam in their for cushioning.

Yea I'll make it available, I might do shapeways, as printing this for use with (and with tolerances of) the high definition acrylate, which is like extreme frosted but much smoother and stronger. Either way, I'll figure out some way of making it available.

Yea, That's a good idea to think about!
This is similar concept to the Gunpla hangars that I bought to store my Busou Shinkis , I'd definitely get a few for my ships.

Absolutely, but the architecture in both the original drawing, and in the vast majority of sci-fi style hangers emphasises verticality to imply scale, so it'd just be following suit. A tall hanger looks more imposing on camera than a wide one, so the pillars and such trail from the ground up, rather than wall to wall.

looked these up, and YES ,that's exactly it

yea they will be multi-part, and I'll be trying to design around things that won't be stable and represent them in ways that are strong and easy to print. I haven't settled on the exact design, but I'll probably have to go through a few versions!
So, I was thinking: instead of having cardboard storage on the backs, what if you just made a "blank" that doesn't hold a ship, but instead multiple base cardboard pieces? This what you don't have to worry about a back or bottom sleeve and keeps everything nice and neat.

yea that might be the way to go about it.
Right now I'm not aiming for a comprehensive solution for all ships, but definitely something sturdy enough to take to a tournament.
In keeping with this theme, some extra storage for other cardboard templates would probably be alongside space for tokens and a damage deck I think.
I'm not sure, I'll think about it some more. I've not done much 3D design, only 2D, so this is a learning process on what is and isn't possible
As much as I hate Force Awakens, and any really disney SW stuff, it did bring to the movies Imperial Tie Fighter Hanger Racks. and building Racks in a similar manner would be nice for JUST the Tie Fighters, Tie/FO, etc....
So if I was building the hanger bay as a modular system, I would have the floor sections have room for the Bombers and Darth Vader Tie Advanced, "Clamps" in the ceiling for the Interceptors to hang from, and along the walls would be basic Tie Fighter racks and on the other wall Tie FO Racks. In the middle of the entire display, would be a "Elevator" section where the Imperial Shuttle could sit. If you wanna store cards, maneuver dials, etc with all of the ships, make containers on top of the ceiling section for them. I kinda wanna draw out a concept myself now, but i dont do 3D printing outside of using someone elses from shapeways lol
I'm looking forward to this as well. I like the idea of buying these modular boxes and stacking them together to make some great dioramas.
I also did some looking around on the internet for hangar bits at this scale to throw in there but I didn't find anything satisfactory. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Anything for Standard TIEs and X-Wings to start off with?
Really wish we had someplace to get deck crews, because this would be perfect.

Model train people are probably close enough to the right size, honestly. The lack of detail at that level would be pretty unimportant.

Yep I think model train crew comes in 1/285the scale, which is close enough to be honest. I think a few of those might be great. I'd prefer injection moulded over printed as the resolution will be much better, but finding something that is appropriate is difficult. I may have to model them in 3d and get extreme frosted detail to print out some properly sized stormtroopers and ground crew.
I want to bump this to the first page because I'm interested
Thinking those of us who are electronics savy might find ways to get these lighted too.

You can get dock/construction model people at that scale too, for those really expansive train dioramas. With some painting tweaks, they might actually be ideal.

Yes, I have been building the 3D files with gaps in mind. I'm not certain how many pieces will be involved in construction, but lighting is something I'm trying to keep options open for.

Yea, exactly. I just have to find a set I'm happy with and that will do it perfectly.
the characters that should be in a hangar are going to be mostly these guys (Imperial ground crew):
these guys:
and stormtroopers or droids. So whatever can fit those bills basically.
If I can pull off an ISD or RBC hanger with these, well I've got a lot of TIEs... you can put your kids in college once I start buying ... hope I hold back some so I can put mine in too. Probably not.

Hello.
Firstly, great Idea Citrus Cannon to think of producing Hangers for people to display there models.
I notice some have mentioned My.....Scratch built and kit bashed.....No SLS or 3D printing here NakedDex
I build these to display my modified X-wing miniatures in, as there is nothing really out there.
I also use them as sets to photograph the models in.
They are built from Plastic card stock Kit bashed parts from mostly WW2 Battleships and tanks, and some Sci-Fi kits.
I have box's full of kit parts that I use for this kind of kit bash building.
but of course all these are one off's.
Your 3D printed versions would be good for others to display there models in.
I started building them for my Z-95 VIPER.......
There are ship kit parts, model car gearbox and battery packs, display stand from a battle ship Yamamoto and plastic strip sections.
There's all sorts in there !
These pieces are not very diffacult to build if you have a few kits and some plastic card to base everything.
If you want to know more about building these,
here is a link to my builds....
Fell free to Trawl through and pinch any ideas !
All the best,
Barry.

Great idea. Would love it even more if there was a hollow space in the walls/floors to slip in LED strips, and the 3D printed lights in the hangar were left open to pop some clear or (better yet) translucent PVC onto the tops of. Or something like that. Also, might be a good idea if the left and right walls were separate pieces, so you could extend the hangar as much as you wanted without having to make a bunch of different versions of your hangars.

Yep, walls are separate, currently each hangar is connected by REmagnets to the next, so you can make it as big as you want. The floors are also hollow, but would require drilling if you wanted lights in it. Can you suggest LED strips that work well? I don't have much experience with LED lighting but if there's something people have used well I can easily design around it.

Haha, sorrh, Citrus, I have never really used LED strips. Just seemed like a good idea.

Thank you Citrus,
Im Glad you like the Posts, And its good to see what your planning to do.
Will look great !

Barry.
Rather than use Rare Earth Magnets (which you would need to buy...) why not configure the plastic to have puzzle-piece connectors so they could all lock in together without the aid of a magnet? I'd illustrate if I had some art tools handy...
I really like the gantryways you're using. Once the walls and floor have been made, you thinking about adding different gantry way backings usable depending on the ship? Miniature ground crews could come later, I just like the idea of these mini dioramas.

Seriously great work. It did look printed to me in the picture, but I wasn't looking on the highest resolution screen in the world... Love it when things like this are scratch built. As much as I'm a fan of 3D printing, I love good-old kit bashing and creativity to make things like this. Great job, sir.
Thanks Dex.
Yes kit-bashing in the true Star Wars style
Let's see what Citrus can come up
With, with his designs and 3D printed versions.
Very much looking forward to seeing how they come out.
