New players seeks advice

By SwordOfHoeth, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hello,

I am a new player and have played only a single game so far thanks to my fantastic friend @jimmyrut I have recently purchased Hammerheads expansion and I am now a happy owner of a small Rebel fleet:

It seems that with some upgrades I may reach 300 points so I wanted to ask for some advice from the forum members what would be a good idea to include. I want to limit myself to the upgrades that are available in the core set and Hammerheads expansion at this stage and my aim is to have a fleet for learning the game first. Once I am more familiar with the system I can think of further expansions.

I played a bit with a fleet builder. I chose Dodonna as a commander as I think he will be a bit easier to use for a new player like myself. Please, note that I intentionally skipped the objectives at this stage but if you have any suggestions for that part I would be even more grateful. Here is what I have added so far:

Rebel Outcasts
Author: SwordOfHoeth

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 268/300

Commander: General Dodonna

Assault Objective: Custom Objective
Defense Objective: Custom Objective
Navigation Objective: Custom Objective

[ flagship ] Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)
- General Dodonna ( 20 points)
= 77 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- Dodonnas Pride ( 6 points)
= 50 total ship cost

Hammerhead Scout Corvette (41 points)
- Quad Battery Turrets ( 5 points)
= 46 total ship cost

Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 points)
- Garel's Honor ( 4 points)
- External Racks ( 3 points)
= 43 total ship cost

4 X-Wing Squadrons ( 52 points)

Thank you very much in advance!

Upgrade an X-Wing to Luke.

Dodonna's Pride needs blue dice so switch to a CR90B.

next buy an MC80 with Defiance, ECM and Boosted Comms.

I would aim for a game at 280, anything more is stretching it. You would basically waste the remaining 20 points on stuff that doesn't help you.

280

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 280/280

Commander: General Dodonna

Assault Objective: Precision Strike/Opening Salvo
Defense Objective: Fire Lanes/Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory/Superior Positions

[ flagship ] Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)
- General Dodonna ( 20 points)
= 77 total ship cost

Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36 points)
- Garel's Honor ( 4 points)
- Cham Syndulla ( 5 points)
- External Racks ( 3 points)
= 48 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- Dodonnas Pride ( 6 points)
= 45 total ship cost

Hammerhead Scout Corvette (41 points)
- Expanded Hangar Bay ( 5 points)
- Quad Battery Turrets ( 5 points)
= 51 total ship cost

3 X-Wing Squadrons ( 39 points)
1 Luke Skywalker ( 20 points)

I included 2 objectives each that should go alright with the fleet. (I'd stay away from Hyperspace Assault for the first 3 games though and in general I am unhappy with the yellow choices but Fire lanes should work well enough)

One tip: activate your fighters with squadron commands, that makes them MUCH better. I intended the scout corvette and the Neb as squad pushers.

Hello,

Thank you very much for taking time and replying to my request, I really appreciate that!

@Mad Cat

Thanks!

I am not sure yet in which direction to expand the fleet. I aim to play smaller games so that I can learn the rules with fewer elements to co-ordinate at the same time. I used MC80 in my first game and while it definitely helped to do a lot of damage I have a feeling I would prefer to go for more smaller ships. Kind of like a combination of 5-6 small ships and associated squadrons. But that is still plan for the future!

@Doppelganger

Thank you very much!

I will be happy to use this fleet if my friend wants to use 300 points anyway but I do appreciate your advice. I actually considered Expanded Hangar Bays but I was not sure if it is a good idea for a Hammerhead. Just because a ship can be upgraded with something does not mean it has to be.

I also appreciate your suggestion about the objectives. This is the next step for me but as I have a fleet to command now I can dedicate time to study the objectives. I hope I will be able to play the game soon and if our initial arrangements work I will definitely write a report.

Thanks!

You can find an excellent overview for the objectives here: http://cannotgetyourshipout.blogspot.de/p/objectives-index.html

If your friend insists on 300 slap H9 Turbolasers on the Neb (that might help at times)

An excellent addition would be the GR-75 Transport with a comms net, then you can remove the hangar bay from the corvette and you would land at 295 points.

I grant it, the corvette is a poor man's substitute for the transport but I think its better to have your squads be able to move and fire instead of only moving or firing. In essence you gurantee with those 5 points that another 26 points are not just dead weight.

Also, as a new player working with a limited collection Fabs fleet generator is a great resource for playing with fleet building using only what you actually have on hand.

you can find it here.

@Doppelganger

Thanks again! I don't think my friend would insist on particular number of points. It just happened that I noticed that with the ships I have I am close to 300. I think the fleet you have suggested is good for me to start with and use as a reference point.

Unfortunately, the game I hoped to have is not going to happen this weekend but I am sure there will be another opportunity and I will be able to share what I learned in a report.

@BrobaFett

Thanks a lot! That is a very interesting website for sure. I will definitely play with it :)

Cheers!
