Sometimes i look at people wanting to do min fighter screens and come to the conclusion that I'm just playing the game entirely wrong.

Doesn't get any better without flight controllers, for 60 points.

Alpha anti-squadron for best results, but even in death they will kill above their weight class.

Doesn't work well without Squall but I've been killing it with two or three YV-666s and Valen Rudor. It can be tricky placing him correctly but with Flight Controllers and Squall this group can tear through enemy squadrons.

Okay same task for rebels? Share Bay is in there for sure but then what? Yt1200? Despite the slow speed? More AWINGS?

Why do they both have to be less than 50 points? Is there a format you're playing where you can only bring 50 points of squadrons?

And the Rebel answer is Shara and Tycho, done. Throw in a pair of Z95s if you want (but you don't need them really). But why 50?

Just looking for the minimum fighter screen to hold off other fighters if you want more of a ship heavy fleet which is about 50 to 70 points

It really depends on what kind of squadron commanding capacity and flak support the rest of your fleet has, but I'd recommend something that comes out to even numbers so you can use your squadrons to buy time during fleet deployment.

I personally roll with 6 TIE Fighters pretty frequently in fleets with Raiders and it's usually quite sufficient to handle most squadron problems I come across and buys me 3 more deployments for only 48 points. The main issue being both Raiders and TIE Fighters take a bit of getting used to before they're very effective, both of them being a bit fragile and unforgiving of mistakes.

I pin a vacuum, Rebels minimum is probably Jan+3x Xwing at 58.

For Imps: Zertik, Cienna, Valen, Mauler at 60.

I realoze this this is a bit hypocritical for me as I've been running Tycho/Shara, Tycho/Shara/Blount, or Tycho/Shara/VCX. I back them up with buckets of flak though.

6 TIES are solid, but making one of them Howlrunner for 56 is worth it.

Howlrunner & 3 Interceptors with Stronhold is fun.

The question is: screen for/against what. Against a heavy squadron wall, any screen of 50 points is worthless. Against a no squadron list the 50 points are nearly wasted.

My best suggestion for an imperial screen would be 71 points. Valen, Ciena, Stele, Jendon. You have something against squadrons, something against ships, relay and enough hull to hold some attacks (against "normal" squadron lists).
Yes, it is more than 50 points. But worth it. Because IF the opponent has no squadrons, or you win the squadron fight, Stele + jendon will help you even after this squadron brawl. 4 Damage every turn will hurt every ship. And it he has a heavy squadron screen, you might be able to hurt him bad enough.

And if he has a exteme squadron list and support (Biggs, Jan, Yavaris, Galant Haven, Toryn, Adar, ....) nothing but 134 points in squadrons will help you (and even these will melt like nothing). These 70 points will vanish the same way the 50 points would do.

But Shara and Tycho give me only a smile when i have to face them. They die fast and might not even be able to counter.

Its like i said earlier. A screen for what reason? No real heavy squadron attack list will care for Shara and Tycho. They will just blow them away.

Edit: but on the good side, they have at least a black die against ships. So they are not so worthless when it comes to ship attacks .

So I should have been very lucky in the last 10+ games with both of them, because with the right timing and the right targets, they are real pains.

They survive 1, maybe 2 turns, each which is enough time to blow up the squadron controllers in the neighborhood.

A question out of curiosity: If you wanted only a screen why go with Tempest and not a regular TIE Advanced and save an extra point for an upgrade, bid or whatever?
