It was a dark and stormy night...

By Hepitude, in Runewars Miniatures Game

So... Legion is getting atmospheric condition cards (foggy, sunny, blizzard etc.). I think it adds a bit too much randomness to the games, so I'm kinda glad Runewars doesn't have it, but it would be fun to use them for casual games every once in a while. Does anyone want to weigh in on mechanics or cool ideas for weather conditions? Fog reducing archery range seems the most obvious, but it could also be applied to charge distances.

Fiddling with initiative is another. Blue actions happening 1 earlier, red one later, something like that. Movement distance as well, probably just for advances. Extra panic tokens for being charged. Actually the terrain effects are pretty good guidelines really.

The one promo objective was foggy or something.

For something wacky and casual, what if fog made you randomly apply a turn to your marches? The units get lost in the fog and can't keep their bearing, so they may go off in weird directions. This simultaneously affects the opponent because it's hard to predict where the enemy is in the fog.

For rain, I'd say -1 to all march speeds to a minimum of 1. So if your charge is -1 and it takes you down to speed 1, the rain doesn't affect you, but if your charge takes you down to speed 2, then the rain will take you down to speed 1.

Rain could reduce archer's range. You could do sunrise kinda like solar corona in Armada. I'd do snow for slowing marches down. Lots of cool stuff you could do. Golf-ball sized hail that randomly kills infantry haha

Imo it is good, that RW has not something like weather conditions.

It was several years ago, that WHFB also get the option to use weather conditions, but it sucks.

It was very unbalanced, very situational, and very often, we forgot the weather conditions in several turns of a game. So for me it was not much fun.

I've always been fond of the way Blood Bowl does weather... they put all the results on the very edge of a 2d6 bell curve, so weather very rarely affects the game. In addition, there's a 1-in-6 chance on every kick-off that the weather will get re-rolled, almost certainly becoming Nice.

While there is weather, though, it affects the game a lot ... the penalties end up feeling very harsh.

Just make a terrain card for a map wide condition. Like rain reduce all range effects by 1 minimum 2.

Bah I can shoot a bow in the rain

Fog should do something really good for Waiqar. After all, they come from the Mistlands.
