Career: Pit Fighter

By omgbambi, in Dark Heresy House Rules

Welcome! Ladies, gentlemen, nobles, soldiers, brethren, the poor, all of you! We have all gathered here to night to watch men fight and die! Place your bets! Because to night I have something very special for you..

It just hit me that The Pit Fighters would be awesome characters to play, Gladiators bathing in blood. Merciless trained killers with only one thing on the agenda, blood. So here's my first draft, what you guys think of it? :)

I haven't come up with any cool traits or new talents, perhaps you guys have an idea? Also I kept it simple with 8 straight on levels as I couldn't find enough skills or talents that seemed logical enough to be available to a Gladiator.

I'd appreciate some constructive feedback, cheers!

hm I see that I forgot to add Melee Weapon Training (Power), (chain) and (chock) which of course should be added somewhere in there.

career character gui%C3%B1o.gif

@Attributes
You go much out of the way of the balance of most other careers here. While I see what you are trying here, my advice would be to re-think it along the lines of "three good, three medium, three bad". Especially your Fellowship advances seem much to good for a figure which knows nothing in live but death and blood by galleons and up close, every thrice-damned day since he entered the arenas first time. I would take Ballistic skills as the "third bad". Yes, they do fight with guns in some arenas (like Gunmetalcity). But most of it is ...well "pit fighting". That´s a small place for close combat. Anything else is over to quick for entertainment....or worse, needs to much slave fighters to be entertaining!

@LvL1
Aside from "Primitive", I do not see the need for "Basic Weapons" in an arena (as mentioned above). Pistoles are more then enough for "pit fighting". A "secrect tongue" on level one is a bit strange, too.

@Lvl 2
Deflect Shoot at this level is a little early. I would not introduce this before rank three. Why the should have "Charm" is beyound me. I know that gladiatores tried to be "crowd favorites" in order to get a "thumbs up" it it´s them who are under the blade, but I do not think that the "Charm" skill is the one for this. The "Low Gothic +10" is odd as well. A pit slave is hardly the educated typ, is he?

@Lvl 3
Literacy seems odd. If included as "the odd-ball-choice", it should be a little more costly. I would compare it to the Guardsmen (which have at least a chance of being "better kept") whom get them on the same rank, but for 300xp. Giving them "Charm+10" seems at LvL 3 seems even more odd to me then giving them charm to begin with.

@Lvl 4
Am I mistaking or are you dealing out "Good Reputation" without dealing out "Peer" before? Besides, you could at "Peer (Arena Crowd)" and "Good Reputation (Arena Crowd)" to show a "fan favorite". Costs would not need to be to high if the advancement of Charismas is already harder (as suggested). Dealing out Literacy +10 should come with a much higher cost. Otherwise, your average pit fighter has better chance for education then the average Guard Seargent (see rank 4 of said career).

@Lvl 5
Medicae +10 is something for a skilled Medicus. Much more then just "pitching up yourself". Your knew performance trait (Pit Fighter) is a good choice. You could use it as a substitut for "Charm" in the earlier ranks. The Logis Implant is intended as combat enhancement MOD, right? You should make this more costly. Speak Language Gothic +20... Your bloodbathed deathdealing pitfighters spend a lot of time over books and scroll, don´t they gui%C3%B1o.gif

Honestly, all of this looks like you had a splendid idea and wanted to turn this into a full-fledge career badly . A lot of the skills you added seem to be just "padding". Which is not a bad thing to start with, since the Game Designers of DH did obviously the same. But many of them do not seem to me like you cross-checked other careers for balancing. This is something you should do to keep balancing.

I don´t thinkg that this is a good career list.

Valid points. Thx for the input, I'll try and explain why I did some of the choices.
What I thought a Pit Fighter would differ from a Guardsman or an Assassin is the whole 'Gladiator' style of the character, honor, duty, man against man thing. While a Guardsman finds nothing but endless battle for the Emperor, the Assassin stealthy stealthy without real purpose but to serve his master the Pit Fighter finds purpose and joy in battle itself. That it is an honorable thing to walk out on the pit grounds and either die or come out victorious. Also just a cool character to play :P

@Attributes

Yeah I agree with you, yesterday I thought they were fine but now I see like, Fellowship should start at 500/750/1000/2500 perhaps, willpower @ 300/600/1200/2500

@lvl 1
Makes sense, away with the guns.

@lvl 2 Again agree with you, so much I'd say either have it at lvl 8 or not at all.

@lvl 3 Well the reason I put in literacy there was because even gladiators back in the days of Rome were not ignorant fools, those who survived long enough and got in good grace with their master gained perks other Gladiators did not.
At level 3 I imagine a pit fighter to have gone through numerous fights victorious and is now starting to make a name for himself with his master, better than the average and is granted the gift of reading and writing from him.
Sure it could cost a bit more.

lvl 4
I'm thinking of removing charm all together. Thanks for pointing out the Peer thing. The Literacy +10 is a mistake, it shouldn't come until lvl 6 :)

5-6-7-8

Yeah I'm starting to see the pattern here, perhaps you are right. An alternate career path, for Scum perhaps?
Back to the drawing board I guess :) thx for the input :)

Hi!

Happy that it didn´t gave you any hard feelings happy.gif

While Scum comes as a natural choice if one things of a pit gladiator as captured criminal, the stats are to "ballistic" and "talk-active". I think the better choice would be Assasine. Yes, the path is ripe with "stealth" options from the start with... but for a re-develop, I think it is a good basis since it has a lot of close combat talents early up.

You have to change the starting package, of course
And the stats should be swapt around. The Assassin has "three good; two bad and four medium" stats

Good: WS; ST; T;
BAD: Intelligence; Fellowship
Medium: the rest of it

All you need to do form there on is to walk up the ranks and exchange any Talent/Skill you do not see fitting with something you see more matching.

That is the way I would approach this, if you want to play a "live long Gladiator"....

If you just some-one who has been a Gladiator BEFORE (or during) Inq-Services, make a Background Package and/or Alternate Rank.
