Ready Player One Style Game

By TheMan72344, in Genesys

I posted this in the "Community Theme Ideas" thread, but thought it might benefit from having it's own discussion.

Anybody thought of doing a Ready Player One style game? I've been kicking this idea around for a number of years, even before I read Ready Player One. The thing that keeps getting me stuck is magic and tech, not when they mix, but when they don't. In Ready Player One certain areas are restricted to only magic, or only tech, with some "Chaos Zones" where everything is allowed. Anyway the issue is if characters are built with varying reliance and tech and magic how does that effect them in restricted zones?

Another potential hiccup comes in with the different between the user and their avatar. The users physical stats obviously wouldn't come into play with regards to their avatar, but how would you handle mental stats and skills between the user and their avatar?

Has anyone given this kind of setting any thought?

I did a post in ' Role Playing for Role Players' thread. I will not repeat it here, but I covered how the 'player' has no stats. Any dice rolling occurs with the avatar. Each avatar you have will all have the same XP. When you gain XP you apply it to all characters, representing the players growing familiarity with using the system. Give it a look.

I'm going to be documenting my Dream Park meets Ready Player One campaign here .

Always wanted to play Dream Park. Had the core book for a while. Think I may have given it away. I also had HKAT, was going through a phase of players as players/actors kind of games.
