Anyone interested in a dice based superhero dueling game?

By VanorDM, in X-Wing Off-Topic

This morning when I was semi-conscious an idea popped into my head about a dueling supers using dice. The idea isn't very well fleshed out yet but I do have a core concept. The gameplay would be something akin to MtG or a LCG, a basic duel, but using dice, and would be sorta similar to the Spartacus game if you've played that. Character building would be akin to Champions, where you have X points to build your character with different abilities costing Y points.

I'm thinking there would be special dice, sorta like FFG uses, stead of just numbered dice.

But the question is, would anyone actually be interested in such a thing? I don't think it's something that would be hugely marketable there just wouldn't be many parts to sell. The rules and the dice... There could be mini's involved but the concept is less tabletop wargame and more dice based dueling.

If I thought there were enough people who would want something like this I could come up with basic rules do some playtesting and then maybe a kickstarter.

Kind of like Dice Masters?

I'm not a superheroes person, but the game sounds kind of cool. I like the idea of customizing your character like that. You could print the different abilities on cards, sort of like X-Wing upgrade cards.

I really agree with the last part: definitely finish your rules and start playtesting before you offer a kickstarter, just because you wouldn't want to get locked into working on something you don't want to or aren't really able to do anymore. Along those lines, I'd say definitely do it for the joy of making the game rather than hope of remuneration. If you do finish it, you could print your cards using a company like MakePlayingCards.com . Your kickstarter could fund the printing costs as well as the art commissions you'd need (unless you just went with text and nice trim).

Good luck!

To be honest I've never played it... So maybe? The idea right now is more like a competitive tabletop RPG rules, where you compare the number of successes to the number of blocks the other guy rolls.

Yeah not looking to get rich or anything... Just trying to see if it would even be worth starting up a kickstarter or something.

That's kind of the vibe I was getting, which sounds cool.

Fleshed out the idea a bit more and I think I like what I have so far. Can do lots of interesting things I think with the core concepts. Could also be something you could convert into a more fantasy based system I think. Either by using spells or having the abilities be more akin to combat maneuvers or techniques.

The thing I have to figure out is how well it would as more of a tabletop game with mini's. I don't want to do a skirmish game really, but having two mini's on a table with some terrain to both throw at each other or smash into could add something to the game.

Either one would be interesting. I once did this little scenario with my brother in the Star Wars Saga Edition RPG where we both took super-high-level Sith and duelled on a catwalk over a lava pit. It was really fun. I think either one could work, it would just depend if you want to have more TCG-esque or minis-/RPG-esque mechanics.
