Latari Elves, 3rd core?

By chilligan, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Hey, I just bought into the game with 2 latari cores and a base components set. I plan to get only latari expansions for this game. Is there a need to get a 3rd core? At this point I struggle to get to 200pts, should I wait for army expansions or make the jump to the 3rd?

Once you get the infantry upgrade you can hit 200 no problem. A month later the core expansions will be out.

unless you have a tournament to go to, I'd exercise patience

I'm floating 2, would like to see how they sit after the fix expansion round before I look at a 3rd.

I don't think so. I can usually make a list that gets to 200 with my 2 Cores, but the reasons I'm waiting for the expansion boxes are:

1) Upgrade cards - Aymhelin scions have some really cool ones for their Skill slot, like regenerating wounds, plus the Archers have Hunter's Guile which lets you swap a blue die with a white die in certain situations I think.

2) Dials! - I think besides the 3x2 Archers with Support Scion, I plan on running most things as a 2x1 for the extra actions, attacks and manuverability

3) Darnati Warriors - These will probably be out next month (I hope!) and I want to see how one or two small units of those affect my battle strategy

The base components set comes with the upgrade cards from the core box right?? I think with those you should be able to make a pretty solid list for 200 pts. You do have to rely on upgrades and basically using Aliana to maximum effect late game, but I haven't lost yet out of 4-5 games with the Latari just because they're so maneuverable. I've also found that being first player by having fewer points is a HUGE advantage, especially since I always redeploy the first unit of battlecats I set out via Aliana's ability.

I actually don't have all these upgrade cards (like tempered steel, but we usually just substitute a different card for exhausting) but here's a list I've been using with mostly just 2 cores:

Faction: Latari
Points: 197/200

Aliana of Summersong
# of Trays: 1 ( 36 points)
- Packleaders Spear ( 8 points)
- Ambush Predator ( 3 points)
= 47 total unit cost

Deepwood Archers
# of Trays: 6 ( 42 points)
- Tempered Steel ( 3 points)
- Support Aymhelin Scion ( 4 points)
- Metered March ( 2 points)
- Close Quarters Targeting ( 3 points)
= 54 total unit cost

Deepwood Archers
# of Trays: 2 ( 17 points)
- Wind Rune ( 6 points)
- Close Quarters Targeting ( 3 points)
= 26 total unit cost

Leonx Riders
# of Trays: 2 ( 18 points)
- Triumphant Cry ( 3 points)
- Moment of Inspiration ( 5 points)
= 26 total unit cost

Leonx Riders
# of Trays: 2 ( 18 points)
- Triumphant Cry ( 3 points)
- Rank Discipline ( 4 points)
= 25 total unit cost

Aymhelin Scions
# of Trays: 1 ( 14 points)
- Terrifying Heraldry ( 5 points)
= 19 total unit cost

4) Infantry Expansion! - How did I forget this, once this enters play we'll have so many more options, but most importantly Sorceresses!

5) Maegan Cyndewin - she will be a force to be reckoned with, and if you take her, you can place any sorceress in ANY infantry unit, in addition to its normal upgrades, which should easily get anything to 200. I plan on running a bunch of storm sorceresses to do mass damage to any tightly clustered units.

If you buy 3 cores then buy the standalone infantry you are going to find yourself with way more archers than you'd probably ever use.

Upgrade cards are big, it might be a very good idea to get 2-3 archer boxes for that alone.

I would wait and play 150 point games until the expansions arrive. That't what I did when I just had the original core boxes. As @Wraithist pointed out, cores are great for building large formations but lack the cards and dials you will want.

If you do get a third core I'd be happy to buy your terrain off of you ;)

I'd also challenge this idea that upgrade cards are not released until there's a physical version of it. FFG have put it on their website, ergo it's released. Wouldn't hold up in the world championships but we're not there right ;)
