The Starship of Your Group

By Seguleh, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I seriously, honestly, didn't want our first group to have a YT1300. Imitation isn't the best form of flattery.

Then we played the Beginner set and they fell in love with the Krayt Fang and it's wampa rug. Then when Jo joined, they reinvented themselves as 'the Krayt Dragons Free Trade Without Borders Trade Consortium', and the rest is history the MarcyVerse. And when Racine joined, we fleshed out the backstory of the ship, about how it was the rigger's pet project, stolen from her when Trex murdered her boyfriend. Yes, I know every smuggler says their ship is the 'fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy', but in this case, it's actually true. Here's the Fang doing its thing:

The Krayt Fang by Maelora69

As to the other groups, the AOR group has access to a lot of stuff depending on the mission. The PC who actually leads the Alliance has access to all the ships in the faction, but she prefers the Independence, the flagship of House Ulnar, the ship on which she was born.

The Followers of the Temple group just got its hands on the legendary Crucible, a gift from the mysterious Navigators (the former Jedi ExplorCorp, long gone dark) to stay one step ahead of the Order. The 'Temple' is a state of mind as much as a location, but now they actually have a unique mobile base.

For my AoR group, I had them choose between the Ghtroc 720, the HWK-290, and the YG-4210 during a break. They chose the YG-4210.

How fun it's gonna be when it appears in the Perlemian Haul. Wonder if I should keep it without any mods...

Does anybody play without a ship using the base/homestead/holocron/mentor (or even the pack of fighters) options?

Our rebel cell in our AOR group did, as it made more sense as the first 10 or so sessions were on one world (til they got out of there as they were generating too much heat).

UPDATE:

We will be using a A24 Sleuth for most stuff (one player, explorer type) and a larger ship when more players can join in. I want to avoid YT designs, since they are so common in media while not being THAT common in the galaxy (and a lot of other cool ships are around. YG-4210, TL-1800 or the all awesome space turtle are the main finalists so far for when we have 3-4 players around. Rugged utility ships that are not that amazing, but feel very SW (and can be operated by a small character complement). The Saruman, an YT1000 we used for the first beguinner adventures suffered a fairly catastrophic landing in Ryloth and has been ditched for good.

Cheers,
Xavi

My players started out with a YT-1300 and an AS-1S modular starfighter that the gadgeteer bounty hunter purchased after we converted the characters over from Saga Edition and they went to Bespin for the Jewel of Yavin adventure. The gadgeteer bounty hunter (character - the player decided to bring in a different character) took off and the group then captured a VCX-100 and HWK-290 during the opening sessions of Chronicles of the Gatekeeper . They turned the VCX-100 over to the Rebellion after finding Warde's Holocron hidden in the cockpit (sadly, they did not board in time to save the crew, but DID manage to kill all of the attacking pirates) and claimed the pirates' HWK-290 for themselves. They later "exchanged" the YT-1300 for a modified HWK-1000 after capturing a VT-49 Decimator protoype for the Rebellion and turning it over to them at a deep space Shadowport in the Corellian system.

Not so long ago, the group explored the destroyed Jedi monastery on Devaron to find clues as to the location of Moraband, where one of the PCs had a vision of a terrible space battle that brought them to the site of a crashed Jedi -7b Aethersprite . They salvaged the ship's astromech and the Jedi pilot's datapad, which they discovered was keyed to the beckon call of the ship from the PC's vision. Deciphering the vision, they discovered that a modified but heavily-damaged Consular -class vessel had been put into an eccentric orbit around one of the Devaron system's smaller moons. After repairing the astromech and datapad and discovering the slave circuit, they were able to recover the Consular and make it space-worthy enough to jump out of the system just ahead of the Imperial garrison forces who were investigating the recent activity at the temple. Further exploration revealed three more Delta-7B Aethersprite s aboard the ship in its hangar bay, two of which have recently been traded to the Rebellion for an X-Wing by the group's smuggler pilot. I drew inspiration from the Crucible in Disciples of Harmony and the stats from the two different Consular variants (armed and unarmed) that we've seen introduced so far in the various FFG books. I figured that given the prevalence of the Consulars in the years leading up to and following the outbreak of the Clone Wars, a traveling academy that offered the abilities of a mobile command post would be useful to the Jedi.

And I preferred this approach to sending the players into the ocean in a starship that wasn't designed for such activities.

Ship's Notes: One of a small number of Consular-class vessels modified specifically for the Jedi Order's use through the use of specialized salon pods, the Legacy of Almas was outfitted as a mobile command post and training center during the early months of the Clone Wars. While its specific assignments during the war are unknown, the ship remained unaccounted for by the war's end.

The PCs in my EotE game started out in the beginner kit, so they started with the Krayt Fang . Then they flew it into a cannibalistic cybernetic pirate trap, lost it, and liberated a captured YT-1930V they subsequently dubbed the Argent Topaz . I have 0-hr's Venture poster map, which looks a lot like a YT-1930, but with a modular cockpit - so that's the variant they have. Since then, they've added cloaked smuggling compartments, tuned the hyperdrive to do 0.5 past lightspeed, commissioned a pseudo cloaking device, added extensive security measures, put in a surface-defense auto-blaster, encrypted the computers, added both a gunnery droid brain and an autopilot droid brain, and just put in a secondary transponder. The team's mechanic has a custom loadout, so they still have 2 hard points to spend. They haven't decided what to do with those, and they don't have the money to do anything right now. I believe they may also want to swap out or both of the two turrets' medium laser cannons to quad lasers.

The PC(s) in the Force & Destiny game have a HWK-290, that's amphibious, has cloaked smuggling compartments, security measures, a class 1 hyperdrive, a light laser cannon in a retractable chin turret, and the ubiquitous security measures. It's called Red Hawk ; they stole it from pirates that tried to kidnap them and their (at the time) employer.

The PCs in the Age of Rebellion game are still stormtroopers and an Imperial Navy junior officer; they're assigned to the Overseer , a Vigil -class corvette. None of them are pilots, so I'm not sure if a ship will ever become a vital part of that campaign or not. Depends on what they do - when they eventually defect, they'll probably have a chance to steal a ship, but even if they do so, they might just give it to the Rebel Alliance.

Group 1: The Horizon Ascendant . A souped-up YT-2400 w. "modifications." Its the home and transport of 3 Jedi survivors in a game set 8 years after O66 (GM Bequest). It was given to the captain, Sigyn Ilbis, after Order 66, by her uncle Garm Bel Ilbis, as a means of both escape and making a living on the fringe. The ship is increasingly infamous with the Empire, however, and using transport provided by the nascent rebellion is not uncommon.

Group 2: The Regnant Jest . An decadently outfitted H-Type Nubian Yacht. Owned by a duo of scoundrels: a gambler-gunslinger (male human) and charmer-gunslinger (female twi'lek). It was obtained in a complex double-cross with a hated rival.

I'm also wondering if anyone plays that their ship is transportation but not a "home"--sure it has bunks, but those are like sleeping in the backseat of a car and anyone in their right mind would rather hole up in a hotel. I just see a lot of interesting options lost when everybody assumes that their cramped light freighter has comfortable accommodations that let them hole up for months.

For a while, my party was a bit of a mix of the two. Their frieghter was where they spent most of their nights because they were quite frequently out on missions, and they weren't really the type of party to care about comfortable lodgings (one's a Jedi who'd lived in the wilderness for years, one's a hardcore Lesai addict who doesn't sleep for weeks at a time, and one was a droid). But they had a cantina they operated in Nar Shaddaa which served as a home base, it's where they'd go between missions and where most downtime was spent. Lodgings would be in hotels or apartments nearby; never really got detailed too significantly.

Since they pissed off the Empire and had their cantina hit by a Storm Commando squadron, they've stayed in their ship pretty much exclusively. There's still vague plans to re-establish something eventually though; the idea of opening up their own Shadowport has bounced around a few times.

It really depends on the ship. A yacht is probably very comfortable . After all, its designed for comfort and style. However, if you can afford a yacht, you can probably afford a dirt-side residence, too. And, a freighter may have a captain and first mate's cabin in addition to crew bunks. Still, unless you are a tramp freighter captain with no registered home port, you probably do sleep off of your ship occasionally. That said, I may have overstated "home" a bit in my post.

Our PCs are "on the go" a lot . In the case of the Horizon Ascendant, its unofficial home port was Nar Shaada and two of the PCs (aunt and niece) used to have a suite of rooms there, but they are fugitives from the Empire at this point. When not on the go they are at a remote sanctuary founded by the nascent rebellion. In the case of the Regnant Jest, those PCs are flamboyant jet-setting space-scoundrels who love spending their illicitly flowing credits on casinos, resorts, and hotels. But, their permanent address remains their ship.

As seems to be the standard, the group in my game have the ubiquitous YT-1300. Theirs is named the Piper Drive , not only for the pun, but because the person who originally bought it, our Captain Alex, was looking for his wife Piper, and named it after her. She was a former ISB spy that got made on an op and was sold into slavery.

By now, though, Alex barely owns the ship, as the party's accountant droid has basically bankrolled all its upgrades, making the upgrades worth more than the ship! And that droid is mercenary about his investments...

Property can own property? Most of the galaxy wouldn't pay any attention to that droid's claims.

He's been manumitted. And while you're correct that the majority of the galaxy wouldn't consider him a person, the group certainly does. Plus, T1 is great with contracts :) .

My party is currently flying around in a Wayfarer-class Medium Transport that they have named the Pathfinder. I gave the party this ship at the end of the same game session where my two Jedi players got their lightsabers, to sort of balance out the rewards of that session. Lightsabers are awesome, after all, and the players use them nearly every session (but are careful to avoid using them publicly when they can). I only thought it was fair to give the other two players, a medical droid and a pilot, something that they would use every session as well. So I provided the Wayfarer, which is naturally used by the party to travel from planet to planet, and has a modest medical bay inside of it.

Before that point, the players were cruising around the galaxy in a stolen Lambda. Sadly, it was retrieved by the Empire during a planetary occupation, which is what spurred the players to steal the Wayfarer to begin with. Before stealing the Lambda, the party's ship was hilariously ill-fitting for a party of four; an ARC-170.

ARC-170: Silhouette 3, Speed 4, Handling +1, Fore/Aft 1/1, Armor 3, HTT/SST 12/8, Class 1.5 Hyperdrive, Astromech slot instead of a Navicomputer (Complete with a rusted old astromech named M8-TY), Sensor Range Medium, Encumberance Capacity 12, 2 Hard Points, with wingtip-mounted medium laser cannons, an aft turret-mounted twin light laser cannon, and forward-mounted proton torpedo launchers.

Their particular ARC-170 was heavily modded for the purpose of smuggling. The large section of the chassis dedicated to the extensive sensor suite and proton torpedo launchers had been re-purposed into a smuggling compartment, removing the torpedo launchers, lowering the Sensor range from Medium to Close, and increasing the Encumbrance Capacity from 12 to 30. Since the party had 4 members, one would take the pilot's seat, one would take the co-pilot seat, one would take the gunner seat, and the droid would be stored with the rest of the cargo. This didn't work out well for collecting bounties, however, which is why I promptly gave them an opportunity to steal a Lambda. Currently, the ARC-170 is still with the party, docked inside the Wayfarer, which had already been retrofitted with a hangar before the party got their hands on it.

So do the medical droid and pilot get much use out of the lightsabers? If the ship was given to/for them to balance out the lightsabers, it seems that they should get as much time with the lightsabers as the saber-users get time on the ship. No? No. That's just stupid because a ship is a party resource while lightsabers are individual resources. If I were worried about balancing things out, I would have given both the droid and the pilot individual awards along with giving a ship to the group as a whole .

The pilot was specifically asking for a new ship, and gave me specifications for what kind of ship he wanted. The ship may be a party resource, but the type of ship, and the idea of bringing a new ship in, came from the player of the pilot, thus it was definitely a reward to this pilot. Keep in mind, the party already had a perfectly functional ship, the stolen Lambda. The rest of the party wasn't clamoring for a new ship, only the pilot was.

I'd asked each of the players what kinds of things they wanted for their characters. The Jedi players wanted lightsabers, the pilot player wanted a freighter, and the droid player just wanted a fancy cape (he's very easily satisfied with simple aesthetic changes rather than fancy new equipment. I tossed him a bone and gave him an electrostaff to go with that cape). I'm not looking to perfectly balance every little thing out. I'm looking to have fun with four of my best friends. They were all excited with what they received in the game, and that's good enough.

Side note, this forum, and this game in general, is all about having fun with friends, right? What's fun and fair for one group of people might not be for another. What works at one table might not work at another. Doesn't mean you have to be so condescending to someone else for their decisions that you personally disagree with. I shared what happened in my game because this thread is all about sharing the things that happened in your game (specifically the ships in your game). This thread isn't about attacking others for the things that happened in their game. Hopefully you're not as condescending to everyone as you just were to me.

It wasn't an attack, but if you're that thin skinned that you think it is, then you're probably going to find a lot of what I say condescending, and I don't really care if you do, but you can keep on hoping.

Most is definitely overstated. And contracts are contracts. A clever accountant does not need to hold titles on his own name, it's enough to have CONTROL over those who hold the titles or even just have control over any proof of purchase. While the empire for example will not official acknowledged droids as free persons, they will have no trouble paying out a droid who comes collecting for his "master". Well technical the empire has no problem with paying free bounty hunters either, C-21, IG-88, etc all never had to fear that they did not get paid. ;-)

"Droids, we don't serve your kind here", applies as well only the droids who are not entering an cantina heavily armed. ;-)

Yikes, do you really need to be this confrontational? It's not unreasonable that he took the original post as an attack, the wording was pretty harsh. Maybe dial it back a notch if you don't want to get that kind of response?

There's quite a difference between verbally attacking someone and being condescending. You were the latter, not the former. You did outright call my GMing decision "just stupid" after all. You can excuse me for being somewhat offended when you were calling my decisions stupid without knowing the full context. I just wanted to keep this thread on a more lighthearted note, rather than have people throwing insults at each other.

That sounds awesome! I didn't even think of that! Instead, he got a dragonsnake-leather cape. Hmm... Might have to talk with the player about this later down the line. Is the stun cloak an existing item in one of the books? I only own a handful of them at the moment, so there are plenty of items I don't know about.

That is amazing! Thank you. My droid player will definitely love this. His character is the odd-ball of the group, and he's always after new and unconventional ways to improve his character. And he has a real fondness for capes. This will definitely make his day.
