CRCL's Conversions and Repaints

By CRCL, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I thought I'd start actually keeping a hobby thread for X-wing since I end up repainting and/or converting so many models. I figured I'd start with the last thing I finished.

I am yet to actually play Nym (though I've played against him a bunch), but that doesn't mean I haven't spent an unhealthy amount of time converting and painting a ship I'll likely never use:

Minor conversions include:
- Magnetised the base.
- Added a spoiler salvaged from a spare Misthunter (a conversion I shamelessly copied from someone else).
- Removed the second shorter primary weapon. I just felt the ship had a comedic amount of dakka. I do wish I'd also shortened the main guns a bit too.
- Flipped the turret around so it faces backwards like the K-wing's. I was actually going to magnetise the turret, but it turns out that it's actually two pieces, which complicated the job a bit.

That's a very nice shade of orange - could I trouble you for the name?

And fantastic weathering too, by the way!!

It's actually a 1:1 mix of GW's Mephiston Red base and their Firedragon Bright layer. The highlights are pure Firedragon Bright.

That conversion looks so good, I first took it as shop bought. Adds balance and dimension. I like it.

Thanks!

(but dang! - I've only got all the old GW colours - ah well, I can still hope to mix up a shade that looks as good as yours)

Excellent Job !

I have just started building a Custom Scurrg, and I like how yours turned out.

The Orange contrasts really nicely against the white on the model.

suits the shape.

Well done.

All the best,

Barry.

I really, really want to use my spare G1A tailplane on my Scurrg. But what to replace the G1A tailplane with...?

A ship I converted and repainted last year. Miranda Doni in all her NPE glory:

The ship's peg has been replaced with a 5mm barrel magnet (a standard conversion I do to all my medium and large ships). I also went a little mad with a bunch of 2mm magnets and conducted the most pointless magnetising job in the history of the game:

All this really achieved was cutting the **** out of my fingers and adding to the number of small pieces I need to keep track of.

Not completely pointless - you, at the least, have my admiration!

At university, we would get marked down (like 50%) on our art projects for getting injured (cuts, burns and the like). Someone had cut their finger off on a band-saw years prior, so... do be careful.

A 3d Printed E-wing from shapeways I painted a month or two ago. The FFG E-wing is such a fugly ship, which is sad when you see how cool the sculpt could have actually been.

The only minor modification I made was to trim the two wing cannons down. I found then to be too fragile, and a little long for my tastes.

Wookie Gunship I painted about a month or so ago. It's still the ugliest ship in the game, but at least it's not that stupid wood colour anymore:

Truely inspiring - now makes me want to get one to attempt the same.

Is all that line-work free-hand?

Yeah. It's actually not too difficult, just be patient and use weathering to cover up any mistakes.

Here's some more repaints I've done recently. The photos were taken on my phone, so they're not the best quality.

TIE Striker Repaint:

60344078_438532183606123_196690448393384

The striker's wings still move.

A resistance A-wing I painted as a CAC prize:

60160258_436881587088509_512369113136784

60076889_571003529974651_366230573269227

60099159_2223108074440168_22255298094280

A fairly quick ship to repaint as it's really just 2 colours plus weathering and a few details.
