Is this a Viable Obi Deck? Opinions on improvements

By jedi moose, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum and somewhat new to the game. I don't play at a game store or anything, just with a group of friends who sometimes hold "tournaments" among ourselves, and some of them are pretty good with a lot of cards. I primarily play with my brother when we have time to get together. I haven't spent a ton on the game, but have 10 or so legendaries and a descent supply of cards. I managed to get an Elite Obi-Wan and it has become my goal in this game to make a viable deck with him, which I've read is hard to do. But here is my attempt anyway (posted below this description). I ran it this morning against my brother and won but he wasn't using his Jango/Veers deck that he loves to run and it would probably have been a totally different outcome. He had Rey/Qui-Gon and I took out both characters before he could finish off my Ben. Ackbar still had full health and Shields.

The way I have read most people try to play Obi is to use his Guardian ability to protect someone else. That is easily beatable by simply attacking Ben first, and he is so expensive you don't want him as a meat shield, you want you expensive character to be the meat. So I built this deck based around Ben's Focus ability and 3 melee damage. I added Ackbar because 1) he fits 2) he also has a 2 focus and 3) he allows me to bring in my Launch Bay card. The deck also has some other damage cards and upgrades, and is then stacked with health and shield events/supports/upgrades. I hope to get Launch bay or Strike team on the opening hand or shortly after. The idea is to stay alive until with all of the health and shields. Then focus those big cards to the sides I want, usually damage, but maybe resources or shields. And then maybe use Strategic Planning to roll that Launch Bay again. Ackbar has some use with his resource and focus. If I get a focus on Ackbar its 6 melee damage from Ben, or maybe 3 from Ben and 5 damage from Launch bay. The new Strike Team card works in a pinch as well if Launch Bay hasn't shown up. But there are a few upgrades as well that I can deal some damage with if my big hitters are on the bottom of the deck.

Lastly, if my Launch Bay gets discarded by my opponent, the battlefield allows me to go get it again

As I said it worked pretty well on my first attempt but I'm looking to improve it. I'd welcome some feedback. Thanks

I am a fellow Obi-Wan fan, so I approve of this thread!

This might play similarly to a few Luke/Ackbar decks that may be floating around these forums, so you can look there for ideas. I wouldn't do It's a Trap, because there aren't a ton of red dice here, and you have mixed damage. One of the big points of a lot of Ackbar decks is that he's good with Leadership - if you don't have that card, try trading for it.

I know you said it's casual anyway, but if you're looking for a more competitive Obi Wan deck, maybe give Obi/Rey(Aw) a try? Here's my deck for it:

keep in mind that's an older deck, and not my best work, but it should work pretty well in a slightly more casual scene.

Thanks for the tips. I think i had It's a trap in there with the idea of getting additional dice manipulation, turning my big damage cards to the side I need. But I get enough of that with the focus. Leadership is a way better card. I only have 1 but I'm adding another to my cart at MM.

And thanks for the reference to the Ben/Rey deck. I could try that but I don't think I have enough good blue cards for a mono deck. I dont have force speed or one with the force so I don't think it will work for me. Maybe after I get my EAW box I will have some more good blue cards to try it.

I may also add in some more big damage cards to my current deck. Not quite sure what yet but my current strategy is if I don't get one of my two big supports early to try to keep healing/shielding and burning through cards to get to them. Its risky. Another heavy hitter would help that out. Maybe a good upgrade with a 3 damage side that I can manipulate to.

Force Speed depends on your local meta. Ben/Rey is slower than other Rey decks, so in a really fast meta, Force Speed doesn't do much. It's only really there to combo with ambush weapons to avoid dice control. So if you don't really care about being dice controlled, it can still be very effective to run it without those fancy expensive cards. It's also fine without those in a less competitive scene.

Finally, if you're not using her ability that much, you might not need Rey at all. ObiWan/Kanan might be a really cool deck once Empire at War hits in a week! I'll be trying it out, just for fun!

eObi /Rey. Its a classic but still gets job done. Just play smart with your dice mitigation and ocassional use of Obi guardian until you build up Rey with at least Vibro+Makashi/Lukes saber/Lightsaber and then ObiWans dice begins to shine with "My ally is the force" as he can either dish 6+whatever ReY rolls dmg or if Obi rolls something like 2Focus just MAITF his focus turn him to 3 one of rey's dice to dmg and still it can dish 10-ish dmg. I managed to get 9 dmg out of this move (Obi 2F, Rey +2, Vibro 1Melee, Lukes whatever > Turned Obi to 3 Luke to 3 and bam 9 dmg under the shields.)

Yeah when I get my EAW box next week I'm hoping my options for mono decks open up. I've only got the starter's, half a box each of Awakenings and Spirit of Rebellion, the Two player game I just picked up, and some other random cards that were given to me, bought as singles, and/or won in my "tournament". So mono decks aren't really an option for me yet with my limited card pool.

And on the advice of both of you I've been checking out Obi/Rey decks and Lukbar decks to get some ideas. I don't have makashi, MAITF, lukes saber, force speed or a lot of the other great cards. But I have made some adjustments based on what I've read.

Took out: Journals of Ben, Its a Trap, 2x Hit and Run, Return of the Jedi

Added: Force throw, Mind Probe, 2X Heroism, Leadership

I'm thinking these changes will give me some more upgrades to attach to ben that can be focused so that I don't need to rely as much on Launch Bay, and allow me to make better use of Ackbar as a shield. This will be a work in progress but I'm excited about trying it again.

Just my 2 cents, but I think that deck, or any blue hero deck for that matter, needs to run 2 copies of "My Ally is the Force". I maxes out the possible damage from Obi-wan's dice.

Don't have it yet, but I'm ordering it.

@jedi moose - basically you need 6 cards for this deck to work at least correctly:

Holdout Blaster x2 - To Action Cheat when Played on Rey, plus its always a die.
Vibroknife x2 - Same reason as above, plus its Vibro. Ignores all those nasty Illusions, Armours and Shields letting your damage flow.
My Ally is the Force x2 - With all of Obis focuses and damage you need those.
Then any weapons will do - basic lighsabers, rey staffs, they are all fine if you lack better stuff.

Nice to have are:

One with the force x2 - For 2 reasons: the are going for rey? Cool, override something on her with OWTF before she dies, and then hopefully you will have 2 dice resolutions (1 when its upgrade, 2 after rey dies). They are going for Obi? Cool, you'll play it for free. And ofc its die is awesome.

Other than that its individual prefs for the rest of the deck. Some shields, removals are always good to have.
