Is it worth investing ?

By goncardoso, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Well since the SW Legion is coming, is it worth investing in this game ?

I got the core box 3 weeks before it was announced Legion and i was like "***** now this game will die". I love the concept but after seeing legion i was like, **** this game is good..

I know they are different but its probably this game will die soon after legion and i dont know if keep with it or just let it go.. still waiting for the app to come and still nothing.

The only question you need to ask yourself is "Will I enjoy playing this?"

If you answered yes, well, that's all the answer you need!

Two totally different games.

While Legion may impact skirmish play, the scales of the games seem to cater to separate player-bases. I personally am not going to touch Legion as I did my time with ruler-based large squad mini games back in the 90s with 40K and will likely never go back.

I'll keep my small skirmish, commando-raid game, thank you very much. :)

If you want to play a campaign either now or when the app releases then you have a great game! If you were hoping for great FFG organized play support well join the rest of us.

yeah i guess this game is only good for the campaign now.. well, i would play it for that purpose too but since its probably FFG will stop doing expansions to it ..

Given that FFG stated at the same event during which Legion was unveiled that they're still working on the app for Imperial Assault, I find it likely that they plan to continue producing content unless sales fail to justify it.

The app saved descent 2. IA will be around for quite some time.

I will say prepare to invest a lot of time and monies for legion... We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg of content, wait in about 2+ years where it will be hitting its groove. Now, in the meantime there is a lot of imperial assault to consume especially if you just got into it.

You want to play your favorite characters from the movies and tv-shows and send them on intense, story-focused missions? Play Imperial Assault.

You want to play faceless masses of stormtroopers or rebel troopers led by one or two unique characters in a mindless, large scale battle? Go for Legion.

To me, Imperial Assault is nearer to what Star Wars is at heart, so obviously I am biased.

Even if so, there is so many content in already released expansions, that you can play for years. And the app will add even more.

and they are clearly not giving up on the skirmish game. it's just not looking like a priority lately.

Legion is a TableTop wargame, IA Skirmish is a strategy boardgame, IA campaign is a dungeon crawler. That are three totally different things.

Campaign players will go on playing campaign, especially when the app finally comes. Skirmish has a big base of players, that's not into tabletops. For sure some will leave for Legion, maybe not as many as others think.

There are many characters from the OT, from Rebels and Rogue One, as well as from the sequels, that still can be released for Imperial Assault. And as long as there is money to make, FFG will not stop doing so.

I won't stop playing IA anytime soon!

One of my friends just bought Star Wars Rebellion.

One of my frends started to consider Legion.

All of them in my play group. They will still play IA when we play at my home.

I will also be able to try the otther two games.

So i dont see problem.

But IA has far more value for me. Rich story, old Trilogy feeling, nice miniatures for my wife to paint.

Cant wait for HoE and buy al the new expansions especialy Ahsoka :)

From what I gathered during GenCon, there is not that much overlap between Imperial Assault and Legion.

Even the skirmish modes - which the Legion is exclusively - are very different in scope, mechanisms (grid vs template movement, mission-specific map vs. pre-built terrain independent of setup cards), and playtime (1h vs 2+h). (And there may be restrictions, in Legion you need to take at least two Stormtrooper groups if I overheard and remember correctly.)

I would not be surprised if the tides turn and people find IA through Legion as much as people find Legion through IA.

Here's to hoping!!

I can't really talk about how Organized Play will be impacted for Skirmish with Legion - but if you are planning on playing campaign for IA, you should be totally fine and the core set is a great "investment". There is a TON of content just for campaign in the Core set. The core campaign is a minimum of 11 missions long, so you are probably talking about roughly 25 hours of play (probably more) for one full campaign. Plus, you can easily play the whole campaign two times (or more) and not have it feel stale. There are many choices to make with different heroes, different Agenda sets, different class decks, different choices per mission the IP player can make, etc - that allows for solid replay-ability. We have played it two full times with the same group, plus once with just my son when we were first learning the game (so I'll say we have played the core campaign 2.5 times since we made so many mistakes initially :D )

Honestly, sometimes for our group replaying a mission was more fun because BOTH sides likely have a strategy that they would like to do or change from the last time they played it. From a story telling / narrative perspective, playing the missions for the first time is obviously better - but its such a fun game its still immensely enjoyable, even if some surprises are removed the second time through.

If you decide you are really into IA, there are still three big box, full campaign expansions which would give you another 25-30 hours of play with each run through. Plus mini expansions and ally packs, and that is if they stopped making content at this very second - which is highly unlikely.

I've been waiting for great FFG organized play support for going on 10 years now.

Skirmish is great. The campaign is great. The app is fine...if you're into that sort of thing.

Legion is the new shinny pretty thing. However, unless you are really into miniatures and painting and making your own terrain and hauling all that stuff to the game store, then IA is actually the better game. The skirmish has a much quicker set up, shorter game and plays more like a chess game with dice and SW figures. Which one is better is of course personal preference however IA is flat out more accessible.

Oh yeah, and you get campaign mode and hopefully soon an app to run those campaigns and there is a bunch of expansions for IA. Why are we even talking Legion?

From what I'm hearing from playtesters and those that demo'd it at GenCon (I wasn't going to wait hours in line as I was playing L5R & Destiny tournaments), that the rules are overcomplicated and it's a jumbled mess.

Imperial Assault isn't perfect, but it's **** good and fun.

My vote is IA.

Err... about that.

The Descent app came out in May 2016. That month also saw the announcement for "The Chains that Rust", which is to date the most recent physical product, and which came out in September 2016.

Aside from a digital app campaign released in January 2017 we've not heard peep from FFG aside from saying the app tripled their sales when it came out.

Prior to 2016 there were at least 2 physical boxed products released each year, and one or two miniature packs as well, and they always preceded each new release with an announcement of something beyond.

Just cause there isn't a headstone on the grave doesn't mean it's alive.

That being said, IA at least still has physical product in the pipeline, and Star Wars is pretty popular right now. So, there's hope.

Well, the In Flight report at GenCon this year they mentioned something was in the works for Descent... I'd call that a peep. Not much more than a peep, but a peep at least.

by saved I mostly meant brought the game back into print.

Yeah, FFG had to do some reprinting on Descent. The problem is Runewars stole any and all development away from Descent, not that Descent is lacking products. It flat out has a lot of plastic which can be bought. It did sell enough that I do believe we will see more app support for it at the very least and possibly more plastic. For now however, it isn't getting anything new. So not dead, just in a coma.

Will IA die?

Maybe in your local area, if there are not a lot of skirmish players already and they're looking at doing Legion instead.

IA Campaign has a lot of content, and if you find a group of four other players to play it with regularly you can get a lot of mileage out of it.

The app is being tested at this point in time, We do not have any more information than that. I doubt they will get to testing and never release it so be patient is my best advice,

If you went out and bought every expansion out there today and played two missions every week (a pretty brisk pace, IMO), you'd be busy all the way until 2019. It would take you about 4 months just to get through the Core Box. So who cares if FFG declares the game dead? That's like saying Skyrim isn't worth playing b/c Bethesda stops putting out new content. The game lives as long as you have fun with it. And there is tons of fun to be had.

Watch some tutorial videos, go to your local game store and see if they will let you play a sample copy in the store. Once you are confident you know how to play the first mission (Aftermath), get a crew together and spend the day playing a mission or three. If you have fun after that, you'll know it's worth the money and your time, so go ahead and spring for it.
