Galaxy frame for 4th Edition?

By Wh0isTh3D0ct0r, in Twilight Imperium

Does anyone know if the galaxy frames that people made for the 3rd edition also work with the 4th edition? (i.e., are the system tiles the exact same size as TI3?)

While I'm at it......Hey, FFG, any chance we could get a frame with interlocking segments sold by FFG as an accessory product?

I haven't directly compared (my TI3 is buried on a top shelf), but they do look the same.

I'm afraid to make a mistake, but I saw a comparison on the web that the tiles from the 4th edition are slightly larger than the tiles from the 3rd edition. Models of ships are also a slightly larger and more detailed.

Just checked, the new hexes ARE larger than TI3 by about an 8th of an inch.

Right. We'll have to wait for someone to make a TI4-compatible frame.

I cut a giant hex out of thin rubberised matting to counter the 'galactic quake' that would invariably happen during the game sometime. Worked really well, though a nice star edged frame would be cool. I made a fold-able cardboard one for TI2 back in the day...looks like the hexes will be bigger again for this one!

One of the vendors that sells one for TI3 had a post on the reddit TI sub that he was working out the bugs for a new frame. His website is currently under a redesign as of yesterday when I last checked it. That being said, I wonder why FFG leaves so much money on the table when they produce these games. Why aren't they making a nice Broken Token style insert for their games, or a galaxy frame to keep the tiles from slipping, or a grip mat to hold tiles in place, or a plastic card holder so your sleeved cards stack more easily?

TI4 has a plastic insert for all the components instead of the typical cardboard trench.

Except that the plastic insert kind of sucks, because it's not designed to handle cards that are sleeved, even though FFG sells their own sleeves (and says how many packages you need on the box).

As to why they're "leaving money on the table," my guess is that they just don't have the spare manpower to produce all those little extras. They already put out an astounding amount of content every single month. I kind of wonder how they manage that, as it is.

They do and it's not bad, but I'm still having a hard time keeping all the cards together and organized after I sleeve them. It's a good first step, but they needed to account for sleeves AND for all the plastic bags people are using to separate the faction tokens. Maybe the first expansion will come in a new giant box to also hold all the stuff from the original box.

True, true. I'm probably going to use Plano boxes myself and remove that plastic insert. The plastic insert is nice to have at first, especially for anyone who doesn't want to bother with creating their own organization system or sleeve their cards (crazy people, IMHO) but I'd rather have something more like what I used for TI3, where my Plano boxes kept everything neat and organized and easy to find whatever piece or faction components I needed. Plus, everything still fit into the core game box. So I'm sure I'll be able to come up with something similar for TI4.

Because those kind of niche of a niche of a niche product would cost them more money than they would make. Those sorts of products are really only viable for small outfits that do t have much overhead and don't need to worry about distributors. A company like FFG can't afford to divert manpower and manufacturing time to products that will only sell to a small number of people. It's amazing their even bothering with some of the bling they are doing for x-wing, their biggest seller (by several orders of magnitude, probably).
