Thinking about buying the game...

By jek, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

So I am really interested in picking up the game, I was wondering something and I'm sure this is probably somewhere deep in the past posts, but I'm not going to dig through every past post looking... so here is it.

FFG says that for 3-4 people to play you need 2 cores, would I be able to get around this by picking up the Dunwich Legacy and having the additional resources from that? Or is it still necessary to have the double core product to add the 3rd and 4th players?

Bear in mind, though, that there are some Core Set cards that really warrant a second copy.

Thanks for the input! So it seems like I should just buy the second core, if I get to the point where a 3-4 player game happens! I just wanted to make sure!

I picked up two core sets, in addition to Dunwich. Nice to have the copies for my decks!

If I'm playing solo, do I need 2 core sets ? Thank you in advance

I have 1 core set and 5 expansions I have never had an issue with 3p

Hi Salex,

Depends on whether you buy other expansions as well, as that can fill out lots of player cards for you. At root, here's the issue: most player cards in the core set are 1x, and you're allowed 2x in your deck. If you want, say, 2x machete (a wonderful weapon) or 2x shrivelling (the best combat spell in the game), you're gonna need 2 core sets. If you want 2x Ward of Protection or 2x Old Book of Lore, 2x Lucky or 2x Backstab - all magnificent cards in the right hands - again, 2 core sets. There are, of course, lots of workarounds - people proxy the cards they don't have or just run inferior cards in their decks to try to fulfil the same role... but if you want to run a fine-tuned deck with the right cards, 2 core sets is the way to go.

I should emphasise: you can entirely play the game with a single core set, and you'll be restricted to playing the suggested decks. If you're really loving the game and want to get into fine-tuning a deck, adding a second core is highly recommended! Hope this helps.

Also note that at least with shriveling, there are better versions introduced with packs later in the Dunwich cycle. Even if you can only have 1 lvl 1 Shriveling, as soon as you get enough XP, you can intrnoduce another at lvl 3/5 or whatever they are. And you get two copies of each of the higher lvls.

I went with one core set, but my friend has another. We haven't had issues with 3p yet, but it depends how willing you are to build around having the most "optimal" strategies.
