Best possible deck with limited card pool?

By farealh, in Strategy and deck-building

Hi there!

Context: This Friday our local LotR LCG gaming group will meet the play The Siege of Annúminas in Epic Multiplayer Mode. I'm "in charge" of organizing the team in charge of Stage 2.

Currently I have one player in my team with the following expansions available:

1 Core Set

Complete Shadows of Mirkwood cycle

Heirs of Númenor

Trouble in Tharbad

The Nin-in-Eilph

The Antlered Crown

The Land of Shadow

The Treason of Saruman

He says he'd like to play something thematic (ideally Rohan), but has no problem in playing the best non-thematic deck so we can do our part in beating the quest.

Be that as it may, I come to you for help, my friends! Any ideas on what'd be the best deck he could build? I'm invoking the deck building powers of @Seastan , @Rouxxor , and @Authraw , as well as anybody else in the community.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help! :D

Edit: My friend bought some new expansions yesterday :P

Hi,

I'm summoned so I have to answer :).

Since there is only a few heroes I look after the most interesting and the combination possible. I see:

- Boromir: To me it is the best hero you have for the moment. But you don't have his favorite tool: gondorian shield. You only rely on leadership attachment to give him stat boost and sentinel so it clearly underpowered him. (same for Beregond).

- Dain: he is one of the most powerful heroes of this list, but not with the few dwarf allies you can play. Unless you can help a lot of dwarf in the other table he is not playable for the moment.

- Damord: It is the opposite side since a lot of interesting trap are already available. I think that lore is the weakest sphere of the 4 with the cards you have for the moment but he is still very interesting.

- Legolas: You have one of his great attachment: bow of the galadhrims. You can have a great use of this elves.

Then Eowyn, Theodred, Frodo and Mablung doesn't rely to a specific interaction and they are still really cool.

We can also mention Boromir leadership for a full gondor deck or Eleanor if there is 4 players on the table.

I got three clue, from the best to the weak:

Théodred / Boromir tactics / Legolas : full fight deck

Eowyn / Théodred / Frodo Baggins : rohan with a good blocker as Frodo

Boromir leadership / Damrod / Mablung: gondor deck

Your friend doesn't really have the card pool for a competitive thematic Rohan deck yet, but he's got a lot of Gondor cards. Here's something that I whipped up that would probably be fun to play. I actually ended up loaning a deck similar to this to someone at our Fellowship Event for Annuminas.

The goal is to kit out Beregond with Blood of Numenor and Steward of Gondor, then use him to defend the worst enemies for the table. Faramir can contribute a little ranged attack, too. This deck probably doesn't want to engage many enemies itself.

Thanks a lot for this decklist! It looks pretty strong and I'll show it to my friend to see if he likes it :D

I wasn't summoned (and shouldn't have been) but if you put Boromir in a deck, someone needs to lend the player a set of shields. After that the magic begins.

Thanks for your recommendation! I'm relatively new to the community so I didn't know all the names and faces to summon :D

@Authraw Ones does not simply play leadership deck without sneak attack + Gandalf :) . At least with so few cards. I will make room for this 3 cards, like get out the valiant sacrifice and a blood of numenor. And you make hope do something with Faramir ability with 3 Gandalf.

But I will mainly not playing Faramir and get Boromir leadership in the place. Not only because I don't like Faramir without ent (11 threat for only do something poorly each turn, really?). But mainly because it introduce a real gondor soul to this deck, since without him not any cards rely on the gondor trait, wich is a little bit disappointing to me. And since we are Boromir we are tempted to get more gondor allies like Citadel custodian, faramir ally. We no longer put Gondor for the lore but because a mechanic reward us to do so :).

I never like putting in Sneak Attack unless I have another potential target beyond Gandalf; I hate having dead cards. But sure, if you'd rather swap 2x Sneak Attack for 2x Valiant Sacrifice, that works. (There are only 2 Sneak Attack in the Core, and Blood is pretty core to the deck working, so I'd keep 3x of it in the deck).

You could probably make LeaBoromir work here too. I like Faramir for his Ranged keyword, personally, and I often find LeaBoromir to be clunky--but give it a few test rounds and see which Hero you like better.

The other one is for a third Gandalf. You want to maximize your chance to get the combo :). I Never say that Leadership Boromir is excellent but Faramir is the weakest ranged hero he have in his card pool. Prince Imrahil is probably better than him since he can both quest and attack some turns. If there is no thematic restriction I think Theodred will be better than any of them.

Tactics/Leadership Eagles. Boromir, Prince Imrahil, Theodred.

Thanks! That sounds like a cool hero lineup for sure :D

With a relatively high threat, also not for the faint of heart.

With only one tactic hero you will absolutely need a steward of gondor or you will never play any big eagle. But as we know everyone want his steward on a large table. So I recommend playing a Mablung (and a Boromir) who naturally give tactic resources.

And I would definitely not recommend eagle as a "best deck" even if it funny to play.

My friend now added the following expansions to his card pool:

The Treason of Saruman

Trouble in Tharbad

The Antlered Crown

Any last minute additions/improvements to that deck or any other ideas/recommendations? Thanks a lot to everybody for your advice :D (especially you, @Authraw )

Heh, now your friend might have the basis for a decent Rohan deck. ;)

But sticking with what we've got, it might be worth it to try to fit 2x The Day's Rising in. Warden of Helm's Deep might be better than Defender of Rammas due to the Sentinel keyword if you don't mind having a few more Rohan allies in the deck. Come to think of it, Winged Guardian would fit pretty well in this deck too, since by the end of the game I would expect Beregond to be swimming in resources. Depends on how much of a trait purist you want to be.

Thanks a lot! If you can recommend a basic Rohan deck with what he has, I'll be sure to pass it along (he'll be super thankful for it).

I like Eowyn, SpTheoden, Theodred. Erkenbrand works too, in place of either Theodred or Eowyn, as suits your fancy.

I suspect Beregond will be more clearly useful in Annuminas, but Rohan could work well to help with questing, which is always important.

I was thinking more long term. We're pretty much set for today, as we've practiced with the Boromir deck quite a bit. Now that he bought those expansions, though, I'd like to offer him advice on what to build for our regular meetings—and what to buy next to build the best Rohan deck he can :D
