beginner list

By player2456237, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi guys.

I got thrashed at a local tournament a few weeks ago. One guy said that with list building, he chooses strong ships/pilots and then add upgrades to taste.

So my question. In a 2 ship rebel build as a beginner. Nym, Corran or Miranda? I think these are the strongest ships.

Strong ships, but as a beginner I'd rather go for Dash or Rey, because large base and turret..

Out of the three listed, I'd go Nym/Miranda. Corran is a lot more subtle, and I think it's probably easier to make fatal mistakes with him.

I'd agree with Cassan that Dash (Lone Wolf, Rey crew, HLC, Outrider is my favorite, but some folks still like Push the Limit/Engine Upgrade/HLC and Kyle or Kanan) and Rey (Finn, Kanan, New Title, Expertise or VI, with maybe Engine Upgrade) are also probably great for beginners. Dash is really easy in that he can ignore rocks, then barrel roll away. Rey just throws lots of dice on ships in arc, and it's fairly easy to keep arc.

I also like Poe Dameron (I prefer PS 9 with Intensity, Comm Relay, Black One, R2-D2, and Autothrusters--a less nimble but more tanky build--but ask three other people and you'll get three other answers).

I would never advice a beginner to fly just two ships. The less ships you fly the less is your margin for errors and as a beginner you will make many mistakes, but thats not bad. It is from your mistakes that you learn.
The best chance of winning as a beginner is to fly 4 Y-wings with TLT, but it is also the fleet that you will learn least from flying. So if you want to become a better x-wing player, then you should not just fly turret ships. In your first 3 or 4 tournements you will probably loose most of your games mabey all of them, but you will get better and better and learn a lot from your defeats.
I would take 3 to 5 ships that is rather simple to fly, so you can remember all they can do. Many beginners comes to tournements with complex fleets, that they just seen an experienced player fly and they fail big time, because they can not remember, what their ships and upgrades do and how to use them.
I would suggest something simple and forgiving, that you can learn to fly playing 5 or 6 games before a tournement. Here is some examples:

Chewbacca (Millennium Falcon), Expertise, C-3PO, Millennium Falcon title (50)
Blue Squadron (T-70 X-wing), R2 Astromech, Integrated Astromech (25)
Blue Squadron (T-70 X-wing), R2 Astromech, Integrated Astromech (25)

There is only a few things to remember for this build to function well. If Chewy is attacked he allways takes an evade token and guess zero evades with C-3PO. That way he is guarenteed a minimum of 2 evades. Because of his pilot ability he allways turn crits face down. This combined with his 8 hull and 5 Shields (which with his pilot ability in reality is 13 shields) makes him extremely survivable. Expertise boosts his offence and function as a offensive focus.
Reguarding the T-70 X-wings there is only two things to remember, that all you 2-maneuvers is green and that you can blow your astromech to avoid a damage card even a critical damage. The T-70 X-wings is also very survivable with 3 hull, 3 shields and the integrated astromech.

An even more simple fleet, that has won a lot of games and that not even require upgrades. It functions well due to a lot of hull/shields and a lot of attack dice:

Blue Squadron (B-wing) (22)
Blue Squadron (B-wing) (22)
Blue Squadron (B-wing) (22)
Blue Squadron (B-wing) (22)
Bandit Squadron (Z-95 Headhunter) (12)

I have learned a lot about X-wing by flying this build. Try one of these or something other simple out and fly it for a while, then you will soon begin winning games. Best advice I can give you

What do you have available for list building and do you have a preferred faction? Do you only want to fly 2 ships, or are you open to other options?

I wouldn't advise Corran or Miranda for a beginner, they're both tough to fly well. The same could go for Nym. It's really easy to fly any of those three to an early death.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I've got limited stuff, I was thinking of what to buy.

Of the popular ships I have:

1 E-Wing, 1 T-70, old falcon, 1 Rebel aces. Then scum is 1 YV-666, 1 jumpmaster, 1 starviper.

I'm not bothered about imperials really, I like to re-paint stuff and imperials seem boring for that.

I'm up for buying 1 or 2 new things.

I guess I want to settle on 1 list and get loads of reps with it.

You should first decide if you want to build a scum list or a rebel list before buying.
One idea could be to buy the Scurrg H-6 Bomber because it can be used for both scum and rebels.

A suggestion for a scum list you could play with the Scurrg Bomber:
Captain Nym, VI, Cruise Missiles, Cad Bane, Guidance Chips, Bomblet Generator (39)
Transdoshan Slaver, Cruise Missiles, K4 Security Droid, Boba Fett, Guidance Chips (36)
Contracted Scout (25)

A suggestion for a rebel list you could play with the Scurrg Bomber:
Captain Nym, Cruise Missiles, Guidance Chips, Bomblet Generator (36)
Chewbacca (42)
Blue Squadron B-wing (22)

Cheers guys,

I've had a play around with what I've got. What are your thoughts on these 2 lists?

Xizor and Tel. With every upgrade going, including Gonk for re-gen.

Or

Xizor, contracted scout, trandoshan slaver. A little more forgiving if I go wrong but doesn't hit ad hard.

I'd actually advise playing Corran. He gives you a lot of practice at arc-dodging, jousting and shield regeneration tactics.

PILOTS

Biggs Darklighter (26)
X-Wing (25), R4-D6 (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Corran Horn (45)
E-Wing (35), R2-D2 (4), Advanced Sensors (3), Push the Limit (3)

Blue Squadron Pilot (27)
B-Wing (22), Fire-Control System (2), Ion Cannon (3)

This gives you protection in the form of biggs (just proxy the droid - he's an auto-include), Corran as an Arc-dodger, and the B-wing as anti-Nym, anti-Miranda with the Ion cannon. I flew something similar to my first store tournament win.
