Special Modifications - The Workshop

By Tegman, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi, in the Special Modifications book, on p.94, there are rules for workshops. In the text it says that, if bought, a workshop costs tens of thousands of credits.

The different workshops are: Default, Shipboard, Homestead and Industrial.

My players will most likely be interested in the shipboard variant, which also lacks information about how much space it takes up (other than the ship must be of silhouette 4+).

What I wonder is, does anyone have a clue how much the different sizes of workshops might cost?

Sincerely, Tegman

I've read that a number of people utilize a hard point for upgrades such as this. I thought it was a wonderful idea. Depending on the resources you dump on your players, it might be more feasible to allow them to just have one as part of their starting ship/base/location.

As far as sizes, I didn't read that a larger size confers any benefit, but I will check again. If it does not, you can fluff it any way you would like, but only have it cost 1 HP for the location.

Aye, a hard point might work as well, then they'll get to keep the cargo space on their ship.

The workshop takes up space in your cargo hold. The page does list that the workshop can contain 20 encumbrance worth of tools and supplies, as well as three advanced benefits. So, we can conclude that that is how much "space" it takes up from the cargo hold. That's why it doesn't list a space or HP value. The only time you have to fill up a hard point is if you want to add an additional Advanced Benefit beyond the three benefit limit.

It takes up exactly as much space as the plot says it should. If your group wants to say its a workbench on one side of the cargo bay of your yt-1300, so be it. If your group wants it to fill the entire hold of a Mon Cal Cruiser, thats up to you too.

Make it fit the narrative. If you have the slovenly tech drive the neat freak pilot crazy with all the bits spread through his cargo hold, thats a good thing. If your tech puts yellow tape on the floor and calls that the walls of his workshop, and makes you come in the 'door' indicated in the tape if they what to speak to him, thats a good thing (and an obscure reference).

Like everything else in this game, dont sweat the details. Just work out something that works and go from there. My personal preference is that a workshop on a sil 4 ship should make it hard to carry much cargo while a larger ship should have enough space to have a good sized workshop in its own area that doesnt interfere with the rest of the ship.

Thanks for pointing that out =)
