DIY Terrain Talk

By AldousSnow, in Star Wars: Legion

3590812-0748977265-swtor.jpgUntil this game gets some Subforums, lets talk about all those tips, tricks, problems, and successes you've had making your terrain.

One thing I've noticed while searching the web for 35mm terrain pieces, is that there isn't a ton out there. 28mm is obviously a more common size. So when looking for trees, those pesky things that i had no intention of making myself, I found myself at a loss. Not to mention that the trees on the Star Wars planet Ord Mantell are taller than average. So... DIY it is.

I'm trying out the wire wrapping technique for the first time, and thus far, it's working out great. The second step is covering your wire, and I have found that tin foil is working amazing. Easy to work with and super cheap. Now, I haven't gotten to priming, wool, painting, or flocking yet, but so far, so good. Total cost for 8-10 inch trees will probably be a total cost of $10 in materials, and that should get you at least 4-5 trees with some material left for other uses. And the trees are the exact height I need.

Any DIY tree experts out there? Any tips?

That's the great thing about Star Wars (or sci-fi in general really) it's that size is very flexible. These are alien worlds we're talking about after all, with strange looking floras ranging in all different sizes. Even the trees can be different scale when it comes to the countless worlds in the galaxy. Of course if you're wanting to match it to, say, Endor then you might have to get it on a proper scale but if you're just making general terrain for different worlds then size isn't a huge issue. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know but I just wanted to throw my two cents out there since we do have a lot of terrain noobies in the forums now.

Absolutely everything you said. I quite enjoy that this game will get some noobies into the hobby. It can be intimidating, so I think these forums can be a great place to share stories and ask questions.

After deciding to go DIY with my trees, I'm actually glad I didn't find what I wanted with a pre-made product. Gives me a chance to really go for that alien design.

Looking forward to seeing it! I'm getting started on my new terrain soon. I just finished buying all of the extra revell and bandai ships I could that were close to our scale. I can't wait to make some crashed ship terrain with them.

Ive had my eye on the Bandai X-Wing. I might have to do it.

I wish I knew where I initially saw this idea or had pictures, but starting with dried grape stems can really help your trees look more natural/wild.

I've never quite liked the prefab deciduous trees I've seen, and all you really have to do is wrap the main branches in wire for support, sculpt a trunk, glue the foam shrub stuff to the branches and you're done.

Hope this helps!

The Revell snap-tight is close enough at 1:65 and a heck of a lot cheaper.

Remember, you're playing a wargame, not making a museum diorama. The world won't end if a doorway or hatch is a tad small, or a vehicle has a smaller footprint than it should. Close enough will work.

You have not met my OCD.

I'll do what I can, but I make no promises, you probably won't survive the battles ahead. Probably best you accept that now, so at least you won't be afraid...of spending way too much on plastic space men....

I appreciate your honesty.

Hi guy's i'm n00b to miniature stuff played some other wargames but never really serious and thus never did terrain before.

I really want to dive in Legion however, i'm trying to find stuff to do some Endor style map.

But i'm having a hard time with all this scale stuff it also doesn't help there are no real miniature stores in my city except GW ofcourse.

So i understand Legion is 0 scale but what is appropriate size for lets say a tree in 0 scale in CM/mm ?

There is a lot of awesome videos on youtube for using expanding foam for rocks and other scatter terrain. Check them out you will love them.

TreeScaleChart.jpg

That is the tree scale chart straight from Woodland Scenics. I cant suggest them enough. They have 101 different ways of getting trees on your table. Here's a link to their tree section. I personally love using their fine leaf foliage.

Heres a seperate link for board inspiration. Theres some great Endor board photos there. You can also see my Ord Mantell board an the Woodland Scenics trees I used.

*Link not working, but the thread is called: Table setup thread. Pics / Inspiration. Its currently on page 2.

Definitely. Its in feet/inches. The bottom row is 0 scale, which Legion is closest to. So from the beginning, 3' means in real life a 3 ft tree. The very top row shows in inches how big the tree is on your table. So a 3ft tree would be represented with a 3/4 inch tree model.

An 8ft tree... the size of a big Christmas tree, would be 2 inches on your board. About right, as the Legion minis are just under 2 inches.

The end of the scale states that a 9 inch tree on your board would represent a 36 foot tall tree. About a 3 story building.

Ah great awesome help mate thanks now i get it.

Will check the post (Table setup thread. Pics / Inspiration.) tonight, at work now and my boss doesn't appreciate miniatures that much ;)

I have done a mixture of techniques for making trees right now. Disclosure is I am a total newbie at this, so I hope I can help other newbies by sharing.

For average/ small trees, woodland scenic armatures and clump are really great quality. I picked mine up on amazon. They’re going to be closer to average trees in our world, but that’s ok as a lot of the films are shot in the real world. I use a hot glue gun to stick clumps on it, then a 50/50 Elmer glue and water mixed into a spray bottle misted over it to help keep the clump on. Be careful, hot glue can get stringy and make a big mess really fast if you’re not watching carefully and cleaning any areas before they get wild.

Attach the tree with hot glue to whatever base you’re doing for scatter terrain and you are all set!

For larger trees, I’ve used wood dowels (or even extra chopsticks lying around) to form the trunks. Then tear up coconut fiber basket liners, spray paint them as needed, and attach with hot glue/my misting formula again. This gives a very different type of tree effect, but still viable.

For the biggest trees, like Endor or the real world redwood trees, don’t make the tops of them. Just make a really big trunk - a paper towel tube works great. A postal tube works too for even bigger.

I would upload a photo of my WIP, but size limits are ridiculous and I don’t have a shared hosting provider ... if you’re on the Star Wars Legion Facebook group I’ve posted there.

Thanks Scummy

Yes i ordered some of those postal tubes i thought they were the easiest to start with.

But for the normal trees i wasn't sure about the height and all, also still need to deceide materiaal etc.

I'll take a look into woodland scenic if it's availible here, so far all the stuff i looked for is nearly impossible to get here.

There are some hobby shops where i could order from but all are with the super small train scale theme ;(

Look for the armatures that are 5-7” size (at least what the pack is called). Here’s the amazon link to the exact armatures I used with clump Deciduous Tree Armatures, 5"-7" (12) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BLJJUA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_G6AHAbXMABZ9W

To anyone else living in Central Florida or planning to visit Walt Disney World in the near future there is a series of ships sold at Disney Springs (Downtown Disney) that are well sculpted nicely painted and are the perfect scale for a Legion table. They sell Poe's X-Wing, a Crait speeder, and Kylo Ren's Tie Fighter. I only saw those 3 on my most recent visit. These could easily be repainted or turned in to debris or cover for your table.

They retail for $19.99 each and come with about a one and a half inch miniature figure. I wasn't able to pick them up on my last trip as I picked up a nice Star Wars leather messenger bag and a Medal of Yavin replica before seeing them. Next trip for sure!

Got my desert planet (non-specific) mat ready. Adding a downed T-47 that may or may not have cost similar to the actual Legion unit. Also adding some ruined columns and statue ruins and a big cork bark cliff. Finishing it off with a couple pieces from Imperial Terrain.

My next project is a black volcanic soil mat similar to Lah'mu from the opening of Rogue One. Perfect for lots of bright green vegetation.
