Theory-crafting an Alpha Strike

By Alekzanter, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Outside the box? Oh, yeah. Here's what I've laid out as a template...

Lt. Dormitz (31) w/ 2 Hyper-wave Comm Scanners; he deploys at PS 0. Then, deploy 2 PS 1 TIE Strikers (cheapest, at 17 points apiece), primarily because they are quite a bit more responsive to enemy deployment due to their AA, have 1 more Hull than squints, and are a point cheaper, each, with AA and LWF. When they deploy, they are each assigned 2 evade tokens through dual H-WCS. Lastly, "Pure Sabacc" w/ AA, Swarm Leader, and Engine Upgrade, and is assigned 2 evade tokens at deployment. When play starts, the Trainees move to put primary target in their arcs, and take evade actions . Now they have 3 evade tokens...or take focus actions for their attack buffs. Anyway, Dormitz moves forward and Coordinates Sabacc for a free action, and evade, and when Sabacc moves and takes his action, it's and evade. Almost foolproof defense, and plenty of 1st turn evades to buff Swarm Leader. Sabacc could get 7 dice (at range 1), and the other Strikers could add up to an additional 8. Maybe even get 4 from Dormitz. After turn one, you'll have to fly your **** off.

This is my template. Discuss?

Why would anyone deploy within a reach of this squad at turn 1 given than dornitz deploys at ps0?

Because Dormitz's special ability allows friendly ships to deploy anywhere at range 2 from him, including further into the play area than the standard deployment zone limit.

If I see Dormitz set up like this at PS 0, the first thing I'm doing is deploying on the opposite corner of the map and moving as slow as I can. The Strikers will not reach me turn 1, even with the extra distance. If they don't reach me turn 1 (they won't), the HCS tokens go poof and I'm not worried about turn 2. Even if Dormitz deploys in the center, I can deploy so the strikers cannot reach me. If I deploy in a corner and back against the rear edge of the map, and dial in my slowest moves, the Strikers will stop short by a pretty good distance. My back of the envelope calculations say the Strikers can threaten 19 ship lengths (between movement and Range 3), but it'd probably take more than 20 to reach my ships. And that's presuming there aren't even any rocks in the way to disrupt the movement the strikers want to take.

You might be able to fool a few newer players once, but experienced players will not fall for the trap. To have a chance of it working, you'd probably need to figure out a way to get Black Squadron Scouts with Veterans Instincts, so you could deploy everything at PS 6. If you can deploy after the PS 5's there might be some ships you can hit with this. I think stripping all the modifications off may work, but you'd still have to contend with rock and ship placement which could just wreck your entire plan, and then you'd be without LWF for the later turns and your list will crumble.

But here's the thing: even if Pure Sabacc was able to get a shot off, a range-3 6-dice attack with only a focus token to modify it isn't something which really scares me. I don't want to take too many of them, but I'm not super worried it'll destroy my lists, because Pure Sabacc will be super easy to kill without LWF. I'd be much more worried about Dengar and second ship ordnance lists, or Finn-Rey on the Ghost, or high PS Imperial ordnance, because these ships will be a lot harder to kill, can be patient with their engage, and will probably have better dice mods. I'd rather have Vader's 5-dice Cruise Missile at PS 11 with Focus, Target Lock, and Guidance Chips over a 6-dice Primary with no rerolls and only a focus token.

You need to deploy your ships at PS12 for this to work.. this is the classic dormitz god shot squad:

Lieutenant Dormitz (31)
Collision Detector (0)
General Hux (5)
Hyperwave Comm Scanner (1)

"Omega Ace" (20)
Swarm Leader (3)
Hyperwave Comm Scanner (1)

"Zeta Leader" (20)
Wired (1)
Hyperwave Comm Scanner (1)

"Epsilon Ace" (17)

Total: 100

5 crits on turn 1 with omega ace alone anywhere on the map + 1 unblockable hit with zeta leader and fanatical devotion.

With the above list zeta leader is deployed before the Others so within range 1. And cannot make it to the Alpha strike.

no.

sorry I meant epsilon ace

Epsilon Ace deploys at PS 12, like everyone else with HCS. He doesn't have a damage card before he deploys, so he's PS 12.
