I'm hoping for a NEW original Core Set

By Tal Maane, in X-Wing

Greetings Fantasy Flight Games X-Wing Community!

I need to have moderator approval before I can start posting so thought I'd start a topic which is both a hello and an opinion.

Hello everyone!

Right, now down to business.

This is something that has been gnawing away at me for some time. Fantasy Flight Games has two core sets. The original one for the original trilogy, and a shiny new updated one for The Force Awakens. If you want the updated rules and damage deck you have to either (A) buy the second core set or (B) go to eBay and hope someone is selling them.....

I went to eBay and currently there is no second core set damage deck available. Though I did see a rulebook.

.....But what if, like me, you want to play Original Trilogy and not have to spend money getting either two core sets or use the older damage deck and rules?

I have been waiting and watching. Rogue One was the perfect opportunity to give us a "new" original core set. By "new" I do in fact mean the updated rules and damage deck. Naturally Luke and R2 should still be in there, alongside all the other original Tie Fighter and T-65 X-Wing cards. But, and here's the sweetener for the deal, it could also include the X-Wing fix I keep reading about while I've been spying on the community.

Alternatively, they could have released the new core set, with a fixed X-Wing and two Tie Strikers, and then released a Rogue Squadron expansion which would have Luke and R2. Thus replacing the need for the original core set.

That was just my thoughts anyway.

Though I am keen to get going collecting X-Wing, I will be watching eBay for the new damage deck and rulebook first. If during the time I'm waiting FFG do produce and updated Original Core set I'll be rushing to order it.

Woohoo! I'm now on the forum.

Hi everybody!

Hi. Welcome to the forum. I don't know where you are but a fair few members buy two Core Sets so you may find that someone will just send you a spare deck. I believe you can download the TFA set rulebook though if you don't mind a digital copy?

Regarding a new core set, the game has reached a stage where some fans are keen for an X-wing 2.0 so that's the kind of 'core' set on the minds of many here. I agree in principle, there's no reason why a new core set can't be released every year for every new movie. It doesn't have to repeat any previous content either. As long as it contains the rulebook, templates, dice, and ships for opposing sides it can serve as a complete game experience and a jumping on point for new fans.

Retrospectively, I wish they had done this more rather than all of these waves of ships thrown together randomly. Movie-focused (ie, Return of the Jedi) or battle-focused sets (ie, Endor) seasons would maybe have encouraged more theme to the game from the outset. Rather like how the LCGs are released. I'm thinking in particular about the LOTR LCG here, with each series of expansions linked together thematically and Saga sets allowing you to play the books/movies periodically weaved in. Why does the TFA box not have a TFA mission? Why are none of the missions from the movies? It's a big missed opportunity.

Movie focused releases would be great. In a similar way, the new things from Rebels too except on a Season basis.

I've certainly noticed a lot of talk about a new X-Wing. I'd settle for a box with just cards, templates, tokens, a missions booklet and rules. It would cost less, but it would allow people to choose the ships they want.

I can download the rules. I prefer the physical book, but the rules are simple enough I won't need the book for long. Templates, dice and tokens are simple enough to get. I'm actually keen on the acrylic tokens and movement templates. So there's plenty of options, including what you suggest. I'll ask around locally if anyone has a spare damage deck.

@Tal Maane Looks like you can find the new damage deck on Ebay for about $6. Just look for TFA Damage Decks.

Edit clicked the link and TFA is out of stock... sorry.

That's the one. I keep watching it. Never know when it might return to stock.

Isn't the original core set currently being reprinted? I'd be legit stunned if these classic core sets don't come with updated decks and rule books.

Hopefully that is what they'll do. That would be a new original core set. Maybe I'm too used to dumb business decisions, but I'm expecting it to be a reprint of the old rulebook and old damage deck too.

If I'm wrong, I'll be a VERY happy guy

I don't think a core can include a "fix" for the X wing as it has to be kept simple - no titles or mod cards - so that new players have an easy entry.

But they could change Biggs in it... And force people to get another X wing with Tie fighters to get his not OP card, if they wished. It's what I'm hoping. Also, they should sync the damage decks at the same time.

Then they can release the fix in a Scarif/Rebels vet pack....

^This.

The Original Set is being reprinted as we speak. I would actually be surprised if its not using the new damage deck, as they have been wanting to phase out the old.

That's a tricky one though. If it's a reprint it will be the same SKU and if they have a different components... Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it.

I don't imagine its any different than when they reprint a ship with corrected rules and cards. For instance the Raider and TIE Phantom are being reprinted and will have the new Palp card in it as well as up to date rules on Cloaking. They haven't changed the SKU in the past. I'll agree that there is still a chance for the old deck to be reprinted, but I lean on the side of expecting the new deck.

Maybe it will be the new deck. Honestly I hope so. But you don't have the option to play with old Palp. You do have option of old deck.

If FFG did that, I would actually buy the revised one (call me a purist, but I don't want to touch the Sequel stuff.

Hey, no worries. I like the sequels, but I still LOVE flying classic trilogy era stuff.

I wish that FFG would just do a phase out of the "old" components in the original Core set. Once they released the TFA set ALL starters should have had the new damage deck and of course all of them should have the most current rules in them. I think they have had at least one original core set reprint since TFA came out but don't remember hearing anything about them including the new DD in it instead of the old one.

They needed to drain the market of old core sets before revising the original trilogy starter. You never want stores to be sitting on outmoded product.

No thanks. Don't want anymore core sets.

You know what, I actually agree. As others have said, it would be better for FFG to update the rulebook and damage deck in the original core set. That is what I'm hoping for.

I've not started collecting X-Wing yet, but I want to start. Truth is I'll probably wait to see if the reprint of the original core has updated rules and damage deck. If not I'll bite the bullet and get the sequel core set. Might be able to sell or trade the ships for any of the cards that are only available in the original core set that are useful to have.

I've contacted Customer Service to ask whether or not the reprint of the Original Core Set will include the new rulebook and damage deck.

Will let you know what I get back

Well folks, today I got my answer. I can't seem to paste so I'll just have to give you the short version:

The original core will have the original contents, only updated with the recent errata.

I would be disappointed but I expected that was the answer.
