Let the Wookie win - Lone Wullf, Poetensity and Rex win a casual tournament

By JaceDK, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I just got home home from a 12-player tournament in a book store in a neighboring town. The organizer, the store manager, always runs a super friendly and well organized event, and the crowd is a mix of players from several different town. It's a relaxed atmosphere and usually a good chance to fly something fun and experimental.

The list:

Wullffwarro (30)
Lone Wolf (2)
Finn (5)
Rey (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Poe Dameron (PS9) (33)
Intensity (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Autothrusters (2)
Black One (1)

Captain Rex (14)

Total: 100

The idea for this list was born in a Facebook discussion on loadouts for the Auzituck gunship. Someone mentioned using Finn on a raging Wullffwarro. While I appreciate the awesome destructive potential of a raging wookie, it seemed to me that this build would be burned down too quickly. So to add a bit more defense, I swapped out rage for Lone Wolf, added Finn's BFF Rey, and gave the gunship a engine overhaul so he could keep a suitable distance to his allies. I figured Poe would be a suitable sidekick for a free-ranging wookie. A 43 point Poetensity build leaves just enough room for Rex as a cheap pain in the opponent's exhaust ports.

Wullf really likes a bit of time to get Rey all focused up so he can both reinforce and have a focus and LW rerolls for Finn's extra dice. So I usually spend a few rounds flying Rex and Poe back and forth along my own board edge. Obstacles are all debris, since Poe can zip right through those and still boost and get his intensity focus with primed thrusters. I aim to get a medium density rock distribution in the board center, and set up in the opposite corner of my opponent.

Rex is usually the prime target, and gets burned down with fury in almost every match. If he manages a few blocks and suppression shots, he's done his job. Any damage from him is pure gravy. Poe and Wullf do their shoot and scoot thing, and both are excellent end-game ships.

The tournament

Round 1

Opponent: Steen, flying Expertise Rey w/Finn, Kanan, TFA title and Trick Shot Jan Ors w/Chewie and Moldy Crow and TLT.

With Rey crew and Moldy crow, both of us are happy to spend a few rounds banking focus. I flank with Wullf and send in Poe guns blazing, looking to get into range 1 of Jan and burn her down. I succeed, but also take heavy fire from Rey, leaving Poe to hang on for dear life as he regens and stays on Jan's tail. Fortunately, I manage to get Rex in and block Rey's sloop, and he and Wullf lead her to the opposite side of the board as Poe finish off Jan. He then zooms off to rejoin the fight with Rey, now back to full shields. The fight ends with Poe having to run for the last couple of turns from a near-dead, but still deadly Rey.

Win 63-57

Round 2

Opponent: Martin, flying Eamonn w/bomblet generator, Cad Bane, clusters and Andrasta and Asajj W/engine, Dengar, dampeners and PTL.

As usual, I stall for a few rounds. He flies full speed towards me, and sends Asajj head first into Wullf, while Eamonn tries his best to bomb Rex and Poe. I dodge the bombs and burn down the Firespray quickly. I figure the fight is mine. Then I dial in a 1-straight instead of a 1-bank and send a fully functional Poe off the table. Yikes. Then Rex dies in a hail of laser. Double yikes. But a lone wookie is a dangerous wookie, especially with full mods and higher PS reposition. The kill shot is a beauty of a boost past Assaj's mobile arc and six dice of furry death into the Shadowcaster's hull.

Win 100-57

Round 3

Opponent: Brian. flying Expertise Dengar and VI Tel, both with K-4, unhinged, plasma torps and chips.

Not much to say here, other than two high PS turrets with unblockable action economy and munitions is bad news for a list like mine. With a 4-point bid, Brian wisely gave me the initiative, preventing Poe from shedding TL's with Black One and dodge arcs. The fight was quick and brutal, and I managed to kill Tel and drop Dengar to half hull before it was over, for decent MOV.

Loss 63 (?) - 100

Round 4

Opponent: René, flying adaptability Bossk w/ mangler, Dengar, Jabba and EU and Predator Asajj w/title, Latts and double glitterstim.

Fresh from a store championship victory, René came on confidently with his innovative drug-addled list. A bit of blocking and suppressing fire from Rex gave Poe and Wullf room to lay into Bossk, who died swiftly, but not before finishing Rex. Asajj proved to be perfectly capable of holding her own against the surviving pair, throwing them through the debris with her tractor beam and using the stress to stay safe. On several occasions, Poe had to turn away and boost to the safety of range 3 and beyond to lick his wounds and regen shields. But in the end, the angry wookie focused up and charged in, killing his second Shadowcaster of the day.

Win 100-14

Round 5

Opponent: Niels (the store owner and TO), flying LW Dash w/ HLC, Rey and title and Miranda w/ TLT, Sabine, prox mine and bomblet.

Last match of the day. I focus fire on Dash, slipping into his doughnut bubble with Poe. He, in return, kills Rex. Then Dash dies. A fair trade. Miranda bombs and TLT's to the best of her ability, almost murdering Wulffwarro. But he hangs in as Miranda SLAMs away from the vengeful Poe. But to no avail, since Poe can boost and focus through multiple debris fields with impunity and ends up in range 1 for a kill shot.

Win 100-14

With a 4-1 record and strong MOV, I take first place, since Steen from my first round was nice enough to defeat Brian's Dengar/Tel, breaking his run for the top. Prizes are a pick of a Wave 11 ship and a bag of tokens. I opt for another Auzituck with matching stress. The winner of each table also got an alt art ugrade card every round, so I also brought home 2x crack shot, 1x predator and a VI. A nice haul on top of a set of great matches.

So, while this list will probably struggle at a competitive event, it's surprisingly strong in a meta dominated by 2-ship builds. And really fun and challenging to fly. Hereby recommended.

Hey. Wait a minute...

I do still like the idea of Lone Wolf/Finn on a Auzituck. My choice of Dash as his wingman didn't do so hot, but this gives me hope.

Finn is actually most useful for defense. With only one reroll, he only matters when the red dice come up all paint. But when that happens, it's glorious.

Nice job on the win!!!!

My brother flies this exact list, minus Engines (maybe Vectored Thrusters? so Poe has a bid). Did well in a recent local tourney too. He built it after my Poes Best Friend list above took out his Dash/Nym.

Wullf is beastly in that build. Reinforce+LW is so strong to go along with offense mods like Rey and Finn.

Nice win! I ran the same list at a tourney a few weeks ago but had the title and intel agent on Rex with a bid instead of engines on Wullff. I went 3-1 and the only match I lost was because I blanked out with Wullff on the last round against a 1 hull 0 agility ship and rerolled blank to blank with LW!

I love the list, it's incredibly tanky. My favorite moment was one of my opponents firing a 5-dice cruise missile thru a rock at Wullff. He got 4 hits and thanks to the rock, Finn, reinforce and a focus from Rey Wullff took zero damage!

Did you find engine on Wullff to be really useful? If you had a 4pt bid by removing engines and won the initiative roll do you think you would have won against Dengar/Tel?

I found Engine Upgrade to be extremly useful. As already mentioned, an Auzitick needs help turning around, and with Lone Wolf it's nice to be able to put some distance to your allies in a hurry.

In this particular tournament, engine helped me slip into Dash's HLC bubble, out of Asajj's mobile arc and let me scoot away to regroup and fill up on Rey focus before reengaging from a different angle.

The Dengar/Tel list was at 96 pt, so that wouldn't have mattered either way.

Round 1 - your opponent has Rey Pilot AND Rey crew????

Edit : Never mind, it was Jan pilot, sorry about that

You're right, I got the names mixed up in the list description. Fixed. Thanks for pointing it out.

I might give this a go, thanks for posting. I like the gunship a lot but I haven’t flown it very much.

Did Poe ever suffer from not being a higher PS? Seeing a lot of things like Nym and Vader recently.

Glad you like it.

Sure, being PS 9 with no bid is an issue for Poe, and I imaging an Alpha-list with cluster missiles could tear apart one of my aces real fast. The Dengar/Nym matchup is good example of how moving before the enemy really hurts, since it negates Black One.

It pretty much comes down to having to fly better and using the high mobility of both Poe and Wulff to outmaneuver your opponent. Blocking and range control are your friends against higher PS ships.
