Questions: Does Artoo regen a shield,even if no facedown damage cards are present? (I don't believe so, but...)
What does the card text "at random" mean? Are you able to choose which card, knowing the crit text, due to Chewie's ability?
Has anyone received a direct answer from FFG? The FAQ does not clarify this.

Chewie's ability has no bearing on face down cards. You take all your face down cards and shuffle them and pick one randomly, and flip it up. Chewie's ability doesn't then flip it down, he only works when the card is dealt.
I think Chewie does something other than what you think. What is it you understand him to do in this context?
R2 can recover a shield as long as you have no shields left. Ideally you want to do this before he also has damage cards to flip.
Chewie activates when you are DEALT a damage card. Since flipping a card you are already assigned is not dealing, he has no interaction with R2.
As far as flipping a random card, you would shuffle your facedown cards and then pull one to flip up. If you only have one then thats the one.
Random mean RANDOM. Even if you have say three face-down cards on a ship and you knew what each one was before it was turned face-down you still have no way of choosing which specific one would be flipped face-up if called for. There are many ways to determine which "random" card gets selected (shuffling, die selection) but the key is you have no idea which card will be selected unless of course there is only one card to choose from.
R2-D2 Crew works when a ship has no Shields. It's not dependent on having damage cards, and as pointed out you really would like to be using it before you get any damage cards, much less having face-down damage cards.

Chewie's ability allows him to flip a face up (crit) damage card, face down. Therefore, you would know what the crit is before its flipped face down, allowing you to choose the least damaging one. This is where the random question comes in. How do they want you to randomize it, or is it up to the players to decide?

Let's go through the full sequence.
Chewie gets 2 damage. One hit, one crit, after shields. He deals a face down card, then deals a face up card. Thrust Control Fire, for the sake of argument. He flips TCF face down without effect, per his ability.
Chewie then uses R2D2.
You take both those face down cards, randomise (shuffle) them without turning them face up, and choose one to flip face up. Or you flip a coin for left vs right, or whatever way you want to randomly decide which to flip.
Chewie's ability does nothing in this instance, because it only takes effect when the cards are dealt from the deck, flipping them after they're dealt works as normal against him.
It may well be that you know what all your face down damage cards are with Chewie. That may also be the case with ANYONE using R2D2 crew, either because they got a crit like TCF which self-flips, or because they spent their actions or other cards to flip the crits face down. Which is why you randomly choose one. If you choose one using any information you have about it, you've not made a *random* choice. It's up to the players to decide a satisfactory method of randomising the choice, but it does have to be random.
Edited by thespaceinvaderIf there is one benefit to knowing what your face-down damage cards are likely to be it gives you more information about whether or not you are willing to risk using R2-D2. Playing old Chewbacca and you get dealt two Direct Hits to turn face down you may want to think twice about using R2-D2 when flipping one of those face-up pretty much negates the benefit of the added Shield in a lot of cases.

There is no set procedure to randomise the cards, no. In most circles the generally accepted practice is for you to shuffle them and allow the opponent to pick one.
However you go about it, though, the selection must be random. If you are picking a card because you know what it is, your selection is not random and you are cheating.
Obviously if there's only one card and you know what it is that would be the exception...

Indeed. The same thing applies in reverse with Kylo Ren/Lieutenant Colzet combinations.
I am picking a face-down damage card at random - from a pool of precisely 1 "Blinded Pilot" card. Would you like me to shuffle?
