Wand Of DragonFire

By Doucha, in Talisman Rules Questions

Or whatever it is from the Dungeoan Expansion Tresure reward.

One of our players was convinced that the wand did away with battle, he read it such that you use it to add your Craft to your Die and if it's higher than your opponents he dies - END.

The rest of us read it as do the above, cause the lss of likfe and then proceed to battle as normal - sort of having the wand as a bonus death blow.
He did not like this as he was in no shape to win standard battles, but his high craft meant he could deal a death blow and according to him walk away.

Upon thinking about it and readin gthe card again - it's not so clear and he 'may' be right - I don't think that this fits with some of the other Dungeaon Cards, with the backfiring and the nbonuses that they give, so taking them into account weighs the argumant more toward our way of thinking - but I do not like to dismiss something when there's a grey area, and usually, by midnight and a few beers, there's either a fight or people don't want to go discussing et more rules/rule changes and pedanticness, so it usually just swings in my favour because I'm the host and nobody wants to put a valid/strong argument/case forward by then - hopefully you can, or give me some sort of rule reference or something, so I can make a more informed decision about such things.

Also same gyuy using the Elixir of Life read it such that it acted more like armour - so he'd lose a battle, and role and if it says 'gain a life' he'd try to take a life, if it said lose a life he'd lose his ONE life only - the rest of the people kept out of the argument and I stated that you must lose the life from battle and THEN roll, and if you Gain a life it's just a null action, if you lose a life you lose ANOTHER life (2 in total) that's the risk of the elixir.

He did not take kindly to losing two lives and the next game turned up with his Nintendo DS and when it was not his turn, like a child he palayed that. GIT!
He has been appropriately hung, drawnand quartered since, and after missing several games due to his abhorrent behaviour has been allowed to return tot he world of Talisman... upon whic started the Wand Of Dragon fire debate - but at least on this one it's not so clear cut.. well maybe I think I'm right :)

My wife andI just played a game and I had the WofDF. It appears to me that your friend is correct on this one. If die roll plus Craft are greater than the creature's Strength it dies...BOOM! If not A regular combat would ensue.

The rub is that creatures destroyed by the wand cannot be collected as Strength trophies, and, just in case, I inerpret it as being only isable against creatures on adventure cards.

As for the Elixer you are correct, drink of the Elixer after the combat has been finished and you loose a life, or lose a life for any other reason. It is a precondition of use to lose (discard) a life.

Note WoDF says "creature", which includes Enemies (Adventure cards with that keyword) and board encounters that attack you with Strength, like Sentinel, Dragon in the Cave card, etc. (since the Wand only works in battle).

In terms of pvp WoDF, similar to Finger of Death, or Fireball, the effect is before battle, the life(s) lost (if any), and then battle will continue unless the other character is killed by that point. (Seen it... FoD + Fireball, then a win in battle for the caster. Fastest I've ever lost a character sad.gif 2nd round of the game on my attack. partido_risa.gif ) More or less, the burns don't stop the one charging into Battle.

As for the Elixir of Life, you are right in that the life is lost first, then the EoL roll happens. Meaning if the character has only one life left and loses it, they can't use the EoL. And yes, if you lose a life and roll on the EoL to lose a life, that is an additional life lost on that very unlucky roll.
