To start off, I'm hella excited about this game.
Now that that's out of the way, the idea of making terrain seemed very daunting and intimidating for me as someone who's only miniatures experience is Imperial Assault and X-Wing. About 4 weeks ago I got into painting my IA minis so I've been busy practicing for when this game releases. I bought some balsa wood and sloppily made a structure that could pass off for Legion. After several threads here and on Reddit I found the website thingiverse.com. 3D printing immediately became a subject of interest for me. There are tons of things there for X-Wing and IA. Including what I would consider one of the most iconic Star Wars set pieces, the supply crate. Unfortunately I do not own a 3D printer so I was hard pressed to find one I could use. After a suggestion on Reddit I found that my local library has one for use; I was still intimidated to use it as I have never used one before. I posted on Facebook for some advice on how to go about editing and scaling a 3D blueprint and was recommended to check out a bar in my city that has more than a dozen 3D printers for public use. They are super friendly and gave me a tutorial through their software and let me fill out the space however I wanted to print. Unfortunately it's $20 up to 90 minutes, $40 90min-3 hours, and $60 for 3-5 hours. That's a little steep for me to come here and print too often as my library's rate is $.10/gram of material used with a maximum print time of 6 hours. The tutorial of how to use the software is worth the first trip. The next few might need to go to the library unless I need something huge printed(any ideas?).
I am currently awaiting the printing of 4 supply crates scaled to 20mm. I plan on printing at least another dozen throughout the rest of the year. Now, we don't know the full rules on cover or terrain height but I'm hoping 2 crates stacked on top of each other at 40mm is high enough to constitute cover 2.
This place had been here for 4 years and I had no idea. The main reason I wanted to make this thread, other than my overwhelming excitement as I drink a nice stout awaiting my supply crates printing, is that I had no idea my city contained a spot so perfect for what I was looking for. Keep searching and exploring. There could be something like this around the corner you never turn.
