By jmswood, in X-Wing

I cringe every time I see card names mashed together.

Calling all trolls! Post your worst X-wing namashes.

oh god, stop the evil portmanteaus! Before long, we'll be overrun by motorcycles and cheeseburgers and modems! Where will this madness stop!?!?

When I saw the thread title I thought you were starting a whiney thread to ask people to stop doing it (like a certain immortal Kimogila post) but you threw me for a real loop! I like your style.

I really like Lowwhrricksky Biggsness even though it doesn't exactly fit the bill.

Denguri.

Not exactly the same thing, but they really need to introduce a "Squad Tactics" elite upgrade. There's Swarm Tactics, Squad Leader, and Swarm Leader. We need Squad Tactics to complete the square.

You're gonna get Tactics Leader and Swarm Squad just to mess up the pattern

Dengaroo was one that worked- fun to say, akin to "kangaroo", matched the "momma and its joey" theme with manaroo being the momma and "feeding" Dengar, the joey.

But it started an awful, awful trend. Now everything is name mashed. And most are absolutely horrendous.

I don't mind the portmanteau itself. It's not like it is anything new or a trend that just popped up; smashing two words together to form a shorter word with a meaning people might readily identify quicker than if you said the full two words and explained their link has occurred for a long time and in many different languages. Some portmanteaus do sound particularly obnoxious though.

Even if I did dislike portmanteaus in squad building, I'd prefer them to names that don't have any readily apparent relation to what is being flown. If I can look at a name for a list like Dengaroo and have a general idea of what is being flown ("Oh, it's Dengar and Manaroo!"), then that's all good. If someone is telling me about something like the ColColCol Special ("Well, it's a scum swarm list made popular by a guy in Columbia named Collin. The Collin Columbia Collective, get it?"), then I'm gonna check right on out. I mean, people are free to use names like that, but I'm not gonna help make them a 'thing' by acknowledging them.

Nymgar.

And I always felt Dengaroo should have been 'The Love Boats'.

Heaver's Brunch

I'm okay with the portmanteaus, but straight-up mangling names is a little bit sad...

Ten Nub
Lohick
Horton SLAM
Zertik Storm
Mauler Mithrel

And so on. I've kept my mouth shut so far, but I don't know what I'd do if a new guy comes in wanting to play "Death Vader"...
