Non-Oxygen Breathing Species

By ThreeAM, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have wondering this for much longer than Edge of the Empire has been in existence, but I have never found anything official. So I wanted to pose the question of how have you described it or how do you think it works.

How do non-oxygen breathers (Lunged Gand, Kel Dor, Ubese, etc) eat and drink while on Type 1 (oxygen) planets?

Obviously i'm not trying to set up any type of mechanics for this, its purely flavor. For example my Gand player is really playing up the insectoid aspect and all they ever order is a tall glass of sugar water that they drink with a straw through a tiny port in their breathmask.

Depends on where they are. They might visit something like the Alien Section on Babylon 5, where air breathers needed masks.

I'm sure in a huge ancient countless multicultural galaxy like we see in Star Wars there would be restaurants that have booths and such to cater to different environments.

I agree.

In KOTOR 1 or 2, there is a bar that you have to go in exclusively for ammonia-breathers. I believe there are other references as well, but the seem to not have a problem over all as it is never addressed. We know this is because the original writers never bothered to touch on minutiae of the endless roster of species, but we can take the nonchalance of characters to mean that there are plenty of places that cater to their specific xeno-physiologies.

I heart B5 so much!

Still no droids allowed though :P

I think i will definitely be setting a bar with just such a area in my players future, probably when they visit Nar Shaddaa. Thanks for the Tip!

Step 1: Get an enviro-suit that is set-up for eating and drinking along with an external access "feeder" port.

Step 2: Get back to having adventures!

It would depend a bit on what they do breathe. If they just need a lot of nitrogen then they'd be perfectly okay in a typical earth-like atmosphere. If it's a case of needing unusual trace elements then they might not require a breathing mask, just a small emitter worn near or on the face, similar to Benzites in Star Trek.

As long as oxygen isn't too poisonous, they could take the mask off for a breath or two, and eat quickly. Or for shorter periods, just have the nose hoses.

Or alternatively their masks are fitted with a function that allows them to eat and drink. It mightn't be perfectly elegant but it would fill the function if they had to say, eat in the wilderness.

Alternatively they might have ration packs or liquid consumables that can be partaken through the mask; given that these don't need to recharge doesn't mean they wouldn't have found a way to cator to basic needs while away for extended periods of time.

The current (and previous) version of the US Army's chemical protective mask has provisions for drinking without removing the mask. Inside the mask is a small tube that can be accessed by your lips/tongue. The external surface of the mask has a concealed clip that holds the external portion of the tube. In a chemical environment the tube can - after careful decontamination - be connected to a standard canteen to allow the user to drink. It's slightly more complicated than that, but you get the gist.

My point is that it's certainly possible with today's technology, let alone the range of technology from a galaxy far, far away.

This assumes that we're not talking about an area of technology that SW has (deliberately?) neglected, like wireless data transfers.

KOTOR 2 on Nar Shaddaa. It's filled with Gand.

Granted. The SW universe generally seems more high-tech than our own, despite not really being sci-fi. My answer was a somewhat more-specific version of your own, a few posts further up.
