$100 Imperial List

By eljms, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have a friend who's just getting into the game. I'm interested to see if anyone has any ideas for an Imperial list for $100 to get him started. I think the only constraints I'd put on it are:

- It has to use stuff that's still easily available in the stores

- No repeat ships (i.e. no 4 x TIE Aggressor) because that's just boring

I would recommend the X-Wing 101 articles, they should be very helpful. If not, original core plus ghost expansion would be a good start at US $90.

edit: OOOPS! You specified Imperials! Sorry!

Startling realization.

Um first suggestion. Find out what your friend actually wants to play with! While 5 Intercepters might be boring to you, that may be what they want, and sometimes multiples of the same ship is a good idea to get comfortable with the dial and mechanics.

Imperial Aces or Veterans are both solid starting points. Right after an actual starter set. If they want a specific character like Soonter Fel or even Boba Fett then a single of the TIE Intercepter or Firespray-31 is going to be a must for them. So find out what they want, then ask.....

Ghost is Rebel this person is asking for Imperial stuff.

A list of a Tie striker, interceptor, bomber and defender for $60 or $100 with the core set. Each one in its own expansion pack.

Countdown-20(striker)

Striker title-0

Delta Squadron Pilot-30(tie defender)

Soontir Fel-27(tie interceptor)

Outmaneuver-3

Scimitar Squadron Pilot-16(tie bomber)

Seismic charges-2

Munitions failsafe-1

Total: 99

I hope this helps.

Munitions Failsafe doesn't work with seismic charges...

Otherwise it's a decent list.

As others have said, ask what the friend wants to fly. If they have no preferences, I suggest Imperial Veterans, as well as a Striker, a Phantom, an Aggressor, or the TIE F/o in some combination. Five "pay and play" expansions that have fun ships and good ships (at least for casual). Add a Core Set or Core Set 2, and you've got TIE Fighters as filler. Should be enough for a casual starting list, or even a list good enough to take to a local jank night at the game store.

Sorry about that. Just ignore it. The only problem with the Tie phantom or Imperial Aces is that they are always out of stock everywhere. I have been searching for both for a long time with no luck. Otherwise, they are great buys for new players.

Firstly, thank you for the responses. Checking to see what ships he actually likes is sound advice! :)

Also, thanks for the tip on the 101 articles, this one is perfect! https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/7/10/x-wing-101-fly-what-you-love/

I'd been leaning towards Imperial Veterans but wanted to get a TIE S/F and a TIE Aggressor in there as well. By the time I'd added a Punisher (for extra munitions and twin ion engine) and a Phantom (for FCS) I was over budget :(

There was a thread not too long ago on $100 lists . Here was my response:

F/O expansion - $15

Imperial Vets Expansion - -$30

Defender Expansion = $15

Any core set - $40

Colonel Vessery (35)
Crack Shot (1)
Ion Cannon (3)
TIE/D (0)

Countess Ryad (34)
Predator (3)
TIE/x7 (-2)

"Omega Leader" (21)
Juke (2)
Comm Relay (3)

Total: 100

I love Omega Leader in this context. One of the best one-box ships. Something I flew early in my X-Wing days that was kind of fun combined also the Phantom and Slave I expansions, but Phantoms aren't necessarily easy to find these days (website says "at the printer"):

Omega Leader (Juke, Comm Relay)

Bounty Hunter (Tactician) (add the Slave 1 title and Long Range Scanners if you have Imperial Veterans)

Whisper (Veteran Instincts, Fire Control System, Advanced Cloaking Device)

The list has a reasonable brick up the middle with the BH dishing stress, and two ships which are very strong late game if they can make it there. I tended to offer Omega Leader up as bait, and she'd often be focus-fired down, but then my Whisper is in the flank doing Whisper things. Now, both Firesprays and TIE Phantoms... aren't really strong meta ships, but they can still be fun.

If your friend isn't going to start tournaments right away, proxy upgrade cards. I used to print off black and white images of cards from expansions I didn't have (all the stuff in the Imperial Raider, for example), and a lot of folks just like to run lists off their phones. I've got an unhealthy love of TIE Punishers, but don't get them just for the upgrades. Proxy and call it good. Use tracking tokens for Extra Munitions. Folks who play this game tend to fly casual, particularly with new players who don't own much yet.

If you want a good base for an imperial fleet, that you will nor regret buying and that plays out of the box for less than 100$, there is no doubt in my mind, that you should buy the following expansions for 85$. I have decided on the Force Awakens Core set not the Core set because you want the modern damage deck at some point, so why not buy it right away. But if you are not interested in tournements you might as well buy the Core set.

The Force Awakens Core set 40$
Imperial Veterans Expansion 30$
TIE/fo fighter Expansion 15$

You can make a few good list from this and fly them for a while to get to know the ships before you decide, what to get next. The list below is a good beginner list, that you can make from these expansions and has won me some games:
Countess Ryad, TIE/x7 (32)
Tomax Bren, Crackshot, Long Range Scanners (25)
Omega Leader, Juke, Comm Relay (26)
Epsilon Ace (17)
