No way I can resist...too many Targets between work & home!

so is it a target exclusive? Like the x-wing FA set was? Will be available other places as well?

It's available everywhere, but target had it online (in stock) and I'm currently standing in front of 15 or so in store, so it's a good place to look.

ok. I like to shop at my local game store so I was just wondering. I will check there if my local game store does not have it.

I'd rather do that too, but I buy plenty of boosters there, so I may just get this here. If I buy 2, I can get a $10 GC for buying $50 worth of SW stuff, that softens the blow some. I'm just really wondering what's gonna be competitive in this set and should I even bother. I just dropped a load of cash on Destiny, I don't want anything else right now!

My FLGS didn't have it in so we ended up at Target...they had quite a few.

I tried to support my local shop, but didn't want to wait! However, it was nice to see my fav game pushing into new territory.

Here's why this is screwed up: FLGS owners weren't told what they were ordering - only that it was new and Star Wars, cost $30 a pop and came six to a case. And they had to order by the case. There was NO notice of what this was. So some places ordered a lot because they were financially able to take a chance, but a lot didn't because they weren't. Last night I told my buddy who owns a shop what it was because he still didn't know and didn't see the FFG site before me. This morning he got up early and arranged with UPS to pick up his shipment (they didn't come with the regular Wednesday distributor shipment) early so he'd have them for people when his shop opened.

And guess what? People had already bought them at Target at midnight. Sure, shame on those people for not supporting a small, local business - but shame on FFG for making owners in a VERY risky retail segment blind order things and then have them available at mass market retailers. That's a double screw you to the people who pay rent so we have space to play FFG games.

Well ..... it is Destiny, it will sell out eventually. This isn't something Target is normally going to carry. It is sad the money is tied up for them for a while though.

I'm patiently waiting for my FLGS to get theirs. It should be here today and I will help untie some of their investment.

Kinda a tangent, but wasn't it speculated for a while that Destiny boosters would be sold at big-box retailers? Whatever came of that? I might have gotten into the game if I could pick up a booster occasionally while checking out at Target.

I had 2 sets, Rebels S3 BD, and some TLJ stuff that I didn't really want all adding up to $100 to get the $25 gift card. I sat in target for like an hour then put it all back. No one even plays here. I have $500 in Destiny cards and the wife won't even play, she's hooked on Zelda. Every target in my area has 10+ if I change my mind, I know where to go.

Well putting it in a big retail store could be a great boon for the game, possibly even for local game stores (assuming the big ones don't start stocking boosters) - get people playing the starter set, they then go out and find booster packs.

Maybe.

Depends how fun the standalone experience is with the 2 player starter.

That's what I think happened to X-Wing, Stu! Once they started putting the Core Sets in Targets, the game completely took off! So I'm guessing this could be the big breakthrough Destiny's been waiting for. If the new set is anywhere near as fun to play with as the first wave of Starter Decks, I don't think it'll be a problem to get newbies interested!

We'll see if I'm right, but I have a feeling that pretty soon, this forum will be flooded with new players asking for rules clarifications! It's definitely time for us us to pre-emptively get a Rules Clarifications subforum! :)

Had to drive to three different Targets but managed to snag my two boxes!

:D

One location had one copy (purchased by myself), another had zero, and the third had five. I am hoping the first two locations sold out to people playing or just getting into Destiny, rather than ebay resellers.

On the topic of the LGS -

Selling starter sets like this at box chains is super awesome for the LGS because those stores give the games so, so much more visability than any LGS ever could. And guess where the folks who get into Destiny then go to play and buy boosters/cases/singles?

Yeah, Target use to carry X-Wing until they had to do the heavy discounts to clear the inventory that wasn't selling. It makes sense for Target to carry Destiny along side MTG. Does it make sense for FFG to pay for that shelf space beside MTG when Destiny boosters cost so much more than MTG boosters to make and the margins just aren't there?

Snagged the last two boxes at my local Target! With the $10 gift card it was a sweet deal (can't use it until next purchase but it all washes out in the end).

I recind my criticism of the cover and packaging - it is very sleek and nice. Haven't opened the boxes yet (ordered Olgas and waiting now) but I'm very happy to have the new starter set and on Force Friday too! :D

Sorry - why is FFG paying for shelf space? Aren't Destiny boosters and MtG boosters the same price (approx. 3USD)?

Correct they are the same price to buy, but they certainly are not the same price to make. Also, if you want to sell stuff in those big box stores, you buy the space.

I realized that big box stores buy inventory at lower than distributors' wholesale costs but I have never heard that, for example, Sony pays Target to have their TVs sold at Target stores.

If you are a smaller product line, you typically have to purchase shelf space in those big box stores. Lots of grocery products are that way. Basically if you aren't a popular enough brand or product you're paying the store for the opportunity to sell your goods there.

The last time you bought a booster pack of Magic was clearly a while ago... :P

It would have been nice to let the local stores have the item as an exclusive for a couple weeks and let target stock their shelves by the end of the month. My local store did not receive his order yet and had order restrictions put on him, but Target had two cases sitting on the shelves. Good in the long run for the big boxes to carry it, but a slap in the face to the local small shops where people actually might play the game.

I agree with you on your points for regular gamers supporting their LGS and FFG not permitting LGS vendors to be aware of the content of their purchase beforehand. However, I think selling the item at mass market retailers is not an issue for the 2-player intro set. The mass market retailers gives more opportunity for the product to grow to reach other folks who don't go to LGS and such.
