Corran Sympathizer

By j_man_04, in X-Wing Squad Lists

(100)

Corran Horn (49) - E-Wing
Push The Limit (3), R2-D2 (4), Advanced Sensors (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

Resistance Sympathizer (51) - YT-1300
Recon Specialist (3), Gunner (5), Smuggling Compartment (0), Scavenger Crane (2), Countermeasures (3)

I thought this could be fun, but wasn't sure if it's the best build to play off each other. Any thoughts?

I like it and it seems solid. I played those two pilots/ships together once, but with a different build:

Corran (Push the Limit, Fire-Control System, R2-D2, Hull Upgrade)

Resistance Sympathizer (Dash Rendar)

Tala Squadron Pilot

100 points

Very simple but it worked well. Dash crew in particular triggered often. I didn't land on any asteroid, but denying the extra green die for my opponent's defense rolls was key.

So I ran this list today, and it worked fairly well for me. The Falcon won the game for me. Gunner/RecSpec is great.

I think I'm going to adjust Corran a bit. I'm gonna go with Juke/FCS instead of PTL/Adv. Sensors so he can pack a little bit bigger of a punch. I spent most of the game running with him than fighting.

I like the idea of Corran with a YT!! What about something like this??

96pts Mod and Title to taste on Chewie. Also C-3PO and Rey, with old title makes him pretty tanky

Corran Horn (48) - E-Wing - Push The Limit (3), R2-D2 (4), Fire Control System (2), Engine Upgrade (4)

Chewbacca (48) - YT-1300 - Draw Their Fire (1), Kanan Jarrus (3), Dash Rendar (2)

I have both of these ships but I've barely used them at all, seems like a decent idea!

Any more options to try?

Is Rey better than Recon Spec?

I just dance with Dash and assess the largest threat. I keep Corran watching Dash's donut hole and keeping slow and steady forward movement and then I get in close for a double tap and Dash HLC shot. Corran can get swatted early, so make sure your initial engagement takes out the target. With fire control you have a lock to burn for the second shot as well. So that's a plus. And you may finish them with Dash and save the double tap for the next for. Let Dash take the punishment and finish the final ship in epic double tap fashion. I love the E Wing!

Rey and Recon Spec do somewhat different things.

First, the general then the specific [FEEL FREE TO SKIP]. Rey trades early actions for action economy early in the game. Don't start the game looking to engage, fly somewhat away early, build up several tokens, so then you can get free focus tokens when you red maneuvers, or allow you to combine focus tokens with target lock actions, or evade tokens from the original Millennium Falcon title. Recon Specialist gives two focus tokens now, so its strength depends on your ability to leverage multiple focus tokens per turn. Recon Spec really shines on a ship like scum Boba Fett or pilot-Rey with built-in rerolls for both offense and defense, or a ship like a Kanan VCX or Kyle Katarn where you have multiple uses for your tokens. Someone like Ahsoka works great with both; either crew will allow her to take two actions per turn (she can use her pilot ability on herself, so she can use the Recon Specialist token to evade or barrel roll), but the difference in how either crew works is really highlighted here. Rey requires time to build a token stack, but once built, it allows Ahsoka a lot more flexibility. She can fly over asteroids and still use a token, she can barrel roll to get into position to give a friend the action, or can take a token while stressed (she can help a friend with it, but not trade it for a different action on her own ship--stressed ships cannot perform free actions). Recon Spec works right from turn 1, and never can run dry of tokens, but it requires you spend your action focusing every turn. If you're stressed or if you hit a rock or bump, you're out of luck. If your position isn't right for spending a token for an ally, well, there's nothing you can do. But the ability to never run out of tokens in your stack is really pretty huge.

TL,DR: Recon Specialist adds action economy, but only right now, so it's only great if you can use those tokens right now. Rey trades action economy in the past for action economy in the future, on a 1:1 basis, so her benefit is more flexible, but only once per action invested.

On a basic Resistance Sympathizer, I think I'd rather have Rey crew (and use the free point for a title). You don't really need two tokens offensively, and you only have one agility die, so you don't get as much out of having multiple focus tokens at any one time. However, Rey crew would allow you store early tokens, and then later in the game have both a focus and an evade, or a focus and a target lock. It takes practice to store up enough tokens, though.

I know it was an old play to use Recon Specialist with Jan Ors crew, and get both focus and evade tokens with a single action. If you can add rerolls from an EPT on top of this, I think it starts to look pretty good. I would almost suggest original Chewbacca + Lone Wolf + RecSpec + Jan Ors + Snuggling Compartments + Scavenger Crane + Countermeasures, but that's up to 54 points. That build doesn't leave enough room for Corran Horn in the list, so it doesn't quite work out. :P

Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking Rey and Title as well. Jan Ors crossed my mind but I've failed before by not having enough damage output so I thought gunner would be handy as suggested by the OP.

Maybe you could do without the Crane and just rely on one-use countermeasures for that one scary turn.

Either way this idea came at a fun time for me because I just got alt art Coran and I'd been thinking of my Heroes of the Resistance Falcon I hadn't used.

Is Rey better than Recon Spec?

I think RecSpec pairs with Gunner more than Rey. It gives you better chance to spend both focuses on an attack, or use one for attack and one for defense if need be. And with Countermeasures, I'm rolling 2-3 dice, so having two focuses helps for defensive purposes.

I flew this last week and won against two Scurrg and a Quadjumper.

The Falcon was great, it does feel like easy mode having a 360 degree weapon and such a good dial. I went with RecSpec as suggested and used it nearly every turn. I didn't get much use out of Gunner since my opponent had very low agility and I was hitting nearly every attack. Maybe those points could go elsewhere. Also didn't use Countermeasures but my opponent didn't have torpedoes or missiles.

I absolutely love Corran though, such a fun ship to fly. Judging those moments when you need to run away is great fun. Had one particularly memorable moment where I was looking caught and had to do a massive 5-forward past everything. Only thought is FCS vs his other options.

I think the Falcon did more work overall but it was a nice contrast having one ship that's very easy to fly and another one which requires a different mindset.

Just an update to nobody (!), I swapped the Sympathizer for a very durable Chewbacca with the old title, PTL, recon spec and jan ors. Being able to double down on the evade tokens was useful, he didn't do loads of damage but he did attract attention away from Coran very well.

Not sure how I would do against squads with the super high damage output, but I enjoyed it.

There is nothing wrong with Corran running most of the game as long as you destroy more than 51 points of the opponents ships. In the current meta with so many bombs Advanced Sensors is better on Corran than FCS and to run Corran really needs EU. Some suggestions on wingmen for Corran:

Chewbacca, ASTS, Gunner, C-3PO, title (old) (51)
Resistance Sympathizer, Gunner, C-3PO, title (old), Engine Upgrade (51)
Dash Rendar, VI, Rey, HLC, title (51)
Miranda, TLT, EM, Plasmas, Sabine, Cluster Mines, Bomblet Generator, Ad. SLAM (51)

I love the E-Wing as well but Corran always seems to die early. He is always targeted early by my opponents.

I got a good win and a narrow defeat today with my Chewie/Corran.

Win was against 2 K-Wings with TLT and Poe. Managed to absorb enough hits with Chewie while taking out one K-Wing. Then while the other was out of the fight, my opponent made a mistake and left Poe exposed to both my ships. So I was able to hit him with Chewie and Corran (twice) at range one.

Then lost to Nym/Corran. Managed to take out Nym by hugging him at close range, but lost Chewie in the process. Then I couldn’t win the Corran-off because my opponent was moving second. Chewie struggled a bit more in this game because I got him stuck running up one side of the board.

Overall I think the list is decent, being able to stack two evades and a focus on Chewie makes choosing a target a bit of a dilemma. What I need to learn is how to bring Corran in more quickly if my opponent focuses on Chewie.
