Unique Colors for each Race

By IndyBart, in Twilight Imperium

I wonder who will be the first company to offer 8 additional colors for technologies, trade cards and fleet sculpts? Am I the only one that think it would be cool that the color of the faction never changes? Feels like additional earning opportunity for FFG to let people really make their game 'deluxe'.

I'd been debating for years about picking up a second copy of TI3 and expansions for that purpose. I fired the tech decks didn't really need a color, and I was going to spray paint the extra plastic into distinct colors so I could just have a single package for each race. I was figuring

red

blue

yellow

green

orange

purple

black

white

Dark brown

tan

grey

sky blue

bronze

gold

silver

But I can't think of 2 more colors that would be sufficiently distinct to avoid people getting them confused

I suggest hot pink and scottish tartan

I figured most of those colors but also had lime green and pink as silver may be too close to grey, unless it was really metallic paint. :)

Or they could just release card sleeves with all the different faction's emblems on them so those of us who purchase multiple copies and paint the plastic can put the extra decks to proper work.

I actually did that for TI3... up through Shattered Empire. I wasn't playing much by the time Shards came out so I didn't get around to doing those races. Spray painted them up. Worked great.

I had:

"Naked" plastics:

  • Red - N'orr
  • Orange - Mentak
  • Yellow - Hacan
  • Dark Green- Yssaril
  • Dark Blue- L1z1x
  • Dark Purple - Jol Nar
  • Light grey - Letnev
  • Black - Muatt

Sprayed colors:

  • Baby Blue - Sol
  • Light (lime) Green - Xxcha
  • Pastel purple - Winnu
  • White - Yin
  • Pink - Naalu
  • Tan - Saar

If I had done shards, I'd have to move things around a bit. I probably would have sprayed up a set of metallic bronze for Muatt.

  • Metallic Bronze - Muatt
  • Black - Letnev or Nekro
  • Grey - Yin (for grayscale I guess?)
  • Camo-Green (as long as it's different enough from the other greens) - Arborec
  • Metallic Silver (maybe) - Nekro?
  • White - Creuss (ghosts gotta be white!)

Biggest reason I didn't do it to Shards was that I'd have to buy multiple copies just for the Mechanized Units... and rebuy the spray paint for all of the extra colors and such. Huge amount of effort and expense, and I kind of hated the Shards expansion for various reasons, and had no desire to support it by buying more than the copy I was mad I purchased in the first place.

The game plays with maximum 6 players at the moment, probably 8 with expansions, there isn't that much of a point in making a different colour for each race. Changing colour alone would not justify the expense; however, I would pay if they released unique sets for each race which not only have different colours but also different looks, at least for unique units.

I cannot be the only one wanting to see an exotrireme or a super-dreadnought on the board.

I personally would like to see unique models for each race. But that might get too expensive.

I had 2 copies of 3rd and house ruled some things to make a 12 player game. With the extra system files I made some homebrew systems. It was a lot of fun.

This is looked at in the Documentary.

TLDR very very expensive, only 6 races, and confusion as to exactly what each unit represented (is that a Jol Nar cruiser or destroyer?)

Yeah and with the flagship I can see even more confusion. Especially with the new cruisers. If they do one for 4th Edition they have to do a printout too with the different ship pictures.
