Good. Now people have a chance if they can't be on right when the sales go live for some reason, or aren't the fastest person at data input...
Do folks with Regional or better trophies get automatic registration?

You have a spot saved if you want it, yes.
Edit: For the current season, not just any regional trophy.
Edited by VanderLegionTheir process for May worlds was super easy and didn't hear of anyone not getting a ticket that wanted one...
Better a lottery system then free for all. Both are bad overall
FFG should hold these events in a space that can accomdate the demand as opposed to charging convention level prices for their own facility.
FFG needs to start looking at OP as a promotional expense, not a way to generate revenue.

They need to make the world championship events by invite only.

Why? There are already spots saved for tournament winners at regional level. That's a decent sized group.
They really need to start considering worlds (and op in general) a way to promote the game like Riot does for League of Legends and Wizards for Magic. Those are proved example of how a longer term plan led to better revenues overall for the producers and a happier community.
Instead FFG prefer to make a once in year (or twice like this time) small scale sales boost without considering the bigger picture.
The sad thing is that it won't even have that much additional costs as those 350+ people events in Europe had already proved...
FFG are committed to treating all their games fairly equally.

^ this. X wing isn't all that's running around the time of the event (It's why they had to do the 2 track split timetable). Once rune wars and legion get up and running the event overheads are only going to get worse. As is no matter how big they make it the community will only demand more.
If they ramped it up to the levels people are demanding it would only cause resentment at best, while outright damaging to their other titles which didn't get support.

If you wanted to play X-Wing, sure. If you wanted to play Destiny though...

Destiny was their first year and expected to be in high demand. However, a lottery system really screws with travel plans. This last worlds was my first one and if both my friend and I couldn't go I wouldn't had gone. This lottery system is gonna screw with a lot of travel plans if you can't reliably know if someone can go with you or not.
It would be great if they model it after the Boston Marathon registration where there are merit based registration tiers. Open it up first to anyone that has made the cut at a national event, then anyone that has made the cut at a regional, then store champ winners and do a lottery system for the rest of the seats.
Random lottery is best.
If someone wins a regional by fortressing fsr2 in a corner for nine hours...they do not have more merit then someone who plays x wing.

If the game isn't going to fill it's seats then every one that applies for it gets in. Nothing changes for games that weren't selling out. If the game was selling out it was a free for all for tickets, which is worse then a lottery system. It doesn't impact travel plans any more then the previous free for all did.

But they have a much higher chance of doing well at Worlds. Don't hate the non-player, hate the game that encourages them not to play it.
That's.... what....I'm...saying.
As someone who won the "Fastest Data Entry Skills" contest to get a ticket in 2016, I have to say I think this probably the best solution for the challenge.
My only gripe would be the timings for finding out when you have a ticket set aside for you. Flights from the UK aren't cheap, and the earlier you can book, the better. This leaves it really late in the day to grab any deal.
