(For example bear spray is legal in Canada... but pepper spray is not. Only bears are not allowed to assault you)
I am guessing you live in the country that acknowledges you have a God given right to free speech and states that no law shall infringe upon it. Backed up by one that lets you defend that and other rights. The vast majority of the world does not recognize or legally protect either of those basic human freedoms, even in the western world.
When traveling abroad a 6-7" screwdriver, a meaty padlock, and a length of 550lbs cord with a small but sturdy carabiner (not attached to the padlock while traveling) are better than nothing. Most places that don't have these freedoms also ban self defense spray (the less lethal option I also always carry at home).
