I think some of those just below the cut were Sloane. Biggs scored 28 and was rocking Sloane.

At least the Heat 1 was really close, from what i could see.
And if notice, that an average of 6.8 points (34 points in 5 rounds) was enough to get into the cut, it shows that a lot of rounds soften up the field really well.

Yup, you're 100% correct Tokra. It's why I always defend Armada's scoring system so ardently. It really shines in 4+ round formats. A 5-6 means you're still very much in contention.

According to @IceQube MkII , a large contingent of local armada players showed up with similar lists. And due to random chance, they almost all got matched up early, knocking out many of the Sloane BTvenger lists from contention.

Also, big props to the tournament heads for allowing some, uh, heavily modified models into the event. I saw several ships I didn't expect to see hitting tables and they looked great.

Like shapeways ones?

I’m sure nobody running FFG's US National Championship would allow such a thing.

So are the finals still to be played?

With 5 rounds and <30 player a single defeat is no problem. As i earlier wrote. An average of 6.8 was enough for the cut. This means you can easy lose one or two (even 3 if you don't lose to badly and win high) matches. Even a 1-10 defeat is recoverable.

It must have been something else. But it were not the top8 lists (pure from the view of the lists, not the skill of the players ;) ). From my view of these lists, 5 are easy beatable with Sloane (at least with my Sloane list). The Hammerhead swarm is hard to predict. The squadrons are really hard to take down. And it would cost me the ISD. The only question would be, how many Hammerhead are going down in exchange. This match would be really interesting :) . Josh had 36 points on heat 1. This means he either won all really close (6*6) or he lost one or more matches. But this list does not look like one that win really constant and really high. The top 8 show this as well (7; 4; 7). A good list for a tournament with more rounds than normally, but a hard list if you need the high wins.
The hardest matchup for me (against the top8 lists) would be the Rieekan Ace list. 6 ships and dangerous squadrons. It comes all down to the outcome of the squadron fight.

And a few more statistic facts ^_^ :
In these lists are 4 MC80. All are assault. All had Defiance, ECM and Leading shots. 3 use Ackbar as admiral, one Rieekan.
There are 16 flotilla in the top 8 lists. So there is still an average of 2 flotilla per list. It became even a bit worse. Because the big ships (MC80 and ISD) need a lot of Flotilla to compensate the high cost of this one ship.

No. The top 8 elected to do 3 further rounds of swiss instead of single elimination.

Awesoem way to do it.

It was disgusting day out too, which I imagine favored into it. Who wants to show up, play one game, and then go back out into what was left of Hurricane Harvey?

Great outcome.

Whilst I can see the dramatic appeal of a final, I think this is fairer on everybody.

Wait. So the structure was decided on the fly not set in advance?

Not a large contingent, he was just referring to the Richmond crew, who are just outside of local, and only about 4 or 5 or so.

It was set in advance as single elimination, and they voted day of to change it.

That's being decided on the fly.

Get any cool pictures of such ships?

After all someone has to do the videos. For X-Wing is it SteleTV (and not FFG).
If they focus on X-Wing, they will not do Armada videos.

World Champ is Canadian...

US National champ is Canadian...

Both used a list that was developed in Canada...

@BiggsIRL , I sense a demand for SteelTV...

SteleTV is geared towards X-wing because the guy behind it loves X-wing. His videos look great because of all the time and money he's invested in the gear-a good camera, lights, monitors, mics, etc. Armada is a lot harder to do because of the larger play area, and he's not currently geared towards that size. Also, he was there bacause he loves doing the streaming-FFG had nothing to do with his presence, that was made possible by Nova Open granting him permission and space (space was a big deal, that ballroom was packed).
