Size between large and huge

By Vontoothskie, in X-Wing

So the Gauntlet, Rogue Shadow, Jedi Defender class cruiser, etc... all too big for a large base but not really epic. if there was another base size for ships which allowed them into the game at proper scale, wouldnt that be a great segway into 150 point standard games and weirder, more fun metas?

maybe your Trandoshian battle barge or J-type Starskiff could fit in that scale too. seems like a lot of possibilities

Those would be ideal candidates for epic ships that cost 1 point, which we have yet to get in the game.

I think their nomenclature would get a little screwy then. What sits between "Large" and "Huge"? "Very Large"? How does VL apply to large ship only and huge only? It'd probably cause a bit of a headache in that regard, similar to people calling for a "medium" ship base for some ships clearly between large and small in scaling if not in restriction.

I don't play epic, but from the looks of things a single section of a Huge ship is larger than a Large base, right? That could be your stepping stone in that case - or if somebody wanted to homebrew such a thing.

But, I don't think FFG is in for that level of granularity. For instance, in their Star Wars RPGs, they use a "Silhouette" system which actually functions similar to the three sizes of ship in X-Wing, and would even scale up I think to ship sizes in armada, using a rating 0-10. 1 is adult person-sized, 10 is used for massive orbital stations. In the RPG, almost every snubfighter is a SIL 3, every shuttle or light freighter (what we know as Large ships) is SIL 4, and then corvette-sized ships and so on are SIL 5+, etc. In a sense I think it's similar for X-Wing, they don't necessarily need the gap between Large and Huge to be differentiated in the current game state and may have no desire to utilize ships in that gap - and if they do they might try and apply existing size rules to them.

Also the Rogue Shadow isn't really below an Epic scale - official stats give it a length of 65 meters, that's 2 more meters than the current canon Gozanti length.

(Also not to say the SIL system is bulletproof, the developers are not always consistent in its application. The VCX is severely hampered by being classed as a SIL 5, despite being visibly smaller in profile than ships like CR90s or Gozantis, which really hurts it in mechanical terms)

I do like the idea of something in between Large and Huge as the ships the OP listed, while big, behave differently than a Gozanti or a corvette. While I do think the idea of a medium base is long past ease of application, this could still work, though I do agree that the naming convention is a problem.

The new size category could help keep a ship from being shoehorned into a category it doesn't fit and, if allowed in standard format, could add some interesting Epic only upgrades to play around with.

Sometime go set the Ghost on the table between a Gozanti (or C-ROC) and any Large-based ship for visual comparison.

If there was going to be a size between, it would have happened with the Ghost, but alas, it did not.
