The Consummate Liar

By KungFuFerret, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, I've decided with a particular PC, that he just really needs to focus on lying, like, a lot. A LOT lot.

But with a casual glance of the core books I have, I couldn't really find one that was really Deception focused. I mean, a few had a talent here and there to help with Deception, but not the pure focus of it, like how some other trees will clearly be designed for certain skills as their focus.

I don't have all the supplementals, so I was curious if anyone had some suggestions, and source for a good liar spec.

Thanks.

Scoundrel works just fine. It also has some useful stuff for when the lies fail (like being a gateway into Gunslinger).

The Scoundrel from EotE CRB and Performer from Far Horizons do a pretty good job with Deception. The Propagandist from Desperate Allies could also have a lot of fun with Deception.

I would imagine the upcoming Spy Career splatbook would have something as well... but for now, what we've got is decent!

Forgot to mention the FaD core rulebook. The Advisor makes for a super-powered Deceiver, while the Shadow gives you some really cool actions to perform with the Deception skill. And the Well-Rounded talent there can get your Deception as a career skill if you need it :)

Lots of good suggestions here. The only one missing, that I might recommend, would be the Agitator. With ranks in Convincing Demeanor and Plausible Deniability, you can remove a lot of setbacks from your Deception rolls. Advisor would also (as already noted) be an excellent choice, with only a few easily-avoided force talents in the tree.

Both the Smuggler:Scoundrel and Smuggler:Charmer have Deception/general social boosts. It also would cover the remaining face aspects if you aren't lying.

Yup. And any spec with Cunning-related talents makes for good synergy.

Also any spec that has Smooth Talker. For when you need just that one extra success...or two...

Yeah, i read Scoundrel, but compared to other talent trees, it didn't really feel to be super focused on Deception. Not compared to other trees where you get all kinds of special talents, with Improved/Superior versions that let you do crazy things with the skill check. IIRC it just had 3 setback removal, and a single reroll per encounter. Which is good, don't get me wrong, but I felt there had to be some more Deception focused ones out there. I mean the entire right side of the tree had nothing to do with deception at all.

Now Charmer I was interested in, but as I said in my OP, I don't have all the sources. What book is that in? And what features of that spec make it ideal for a Deception concept?

2 ranks of Smooth Talker, the Natural Charmer talent, a rank of Plausible Deniability, and the flavorfully appropriate (though not directly related to any skill) "Just Kidding" talent.

And the book? :P

In the Smuggler splatbook. Fly Casual, I think.

Oh it's in the Smuggler splatbook, Fly Casual.

Edit: ninja'd!

Check BeggingforXP.com for the spec trees, with the abbreviated description of the talents.

Of course there's going to be a lying based spec in CaM.

If I'm wrong, I'll lick a sock

I feel a tree focused on deception is a bit of overkill. In practice I have found that a 3 skill and 4 cunning with a couple ranks of convincing demeanor will get you past almost any check vs minions and most rivals. It is more a role play thing. Make the right preparations, make a good setup for the lie, and that is going to do far more, and be far more enjoyable than just applying a bunch of rules and making a roll
